I am going to have the option to purchase a new .45 Auto within the next few weeks. However, my budget limit is about $700. Right now, I am leaning towards either the S&W M&P .45 with a manual safety, or the XDM .45. I am definitely open to other options however. About the only option I really am not considering is the Glock 21, and that's only because the Glock doesn't fit my hand well. Something about the grip angle just seems wrong to me. I know they are excellent weapons, but they just don't work for me personally. Any ideas?

If you are open to the 1911 platform, Armscor makes models under the Citadel and Rock Island Armory brands that are well under your price point that would leave money for a good holster, belt, extra mags, and ammo. I believe STI has a model that is pretty popular too.

I don't care for the grip angle on some Glocks, but 1911s are just right form me at least.

Are you not interested in a 1911 type auto? There are a number of decent ones at your price point.

I love the 1911, just don't have the $ for the model I want yet. Eventually, I'm gonna get a DW Valor, I'm just not at that financial position yet...

I have a S&W M&P .45 and it runs flawlessly. Couple thousand rounds and not one single failure of any sort. I think I got out the door with the thing and 4 mags (2 from the mail in rebate) for under $600 IIRC.

Very ergonomic, I can hardly miss with the thing, it is a snap to clean, recoil is very mild, light enough, and surprisingly non-huge for a big gun...if that makes sense.

It's not perfect but it is really good.

You have lots of options, and also a nice 1911 is totally in your price range too but thats up to you.

I would have said glock 21 sf but you don't like glocks, so go with the m&p

Want a $700 handgun that you can purchase NIB for a little over $400? If so, check out the Stoeger/Beretta Cougar 8045. Not only is it an outstanding handgun, it's probably the best valued .45 available in todays market.

For sure go with the m-p. I have had mine for 3 years and shoot 2500-3000 rds with out 1 problem. I reload 230 gr lrn as well as 230 xtp's. It will eat just about any brand of ammo. You can not go wrong the the m-p. Good luck

I can only say that for me, and me only, I would save up a little more money and call CDNN and buy an HK45 or HK45C. I have the C and I really like it. It is durable, reliable, accurate, easy to maintain, has a decent trigger, is extremely well-made and has interchangeable back straps. I have always regretted buying what I really did not want in order to just get something. I have done that lots of times but I hope not to ever do it again. I suggest trying out many .45s and then making a decision based on what fits your hand and your fancy more than what fits your wallet, assuming that you already have a personal defense firearm.

FNP-45 is an HK killer IMHO. You can get the USG version with a manual safety. If I were in the market for a hi-cap 45 this would be my choice. I find it very 1911ish in my hand.

That said most of my 45s are 1911s.

Locally and on GB you can get barely used/like new HK USP's and Sig P220's of all varieties for under $700. That would be my first non-1911 choice.

CZ makes a pretty cool 45 in the CZ 97. Not super common but a heck of a nice pistol for your price range. Also EAA makes a cool copy that takes slides for most calibers, just buy a new slide/barrel/mag. Kinda cool, especially if you want a 10mm some day. Check the forums though, they had problems with cracked frames on some models and its easy to tell which "generation" to avoid.

As far as 1911's go the Valor is very nice and I have guns on par with the Valor but they cant really do anything a $700 Colt/Springer/etc cant do. If you know how to pick out a good 1911 you can easily get a very good one for your price, not Valor nice, but the Valor doesn't have a pony on the side either :) Just got a real nice 1986 Colt MKIV, very well built for $598 out the door, thing is brand new too so they are out there.

For what its worth my $700 or less 1911's shoot almost as well as my more expensive 1911s and STILL better than my HK's, Sig's, FN's, Glocks,...., have ever shot. Do I think the DW, STI's, Baer,....., are worth the cash? Heck yes but a good bare bones Colt, Springer,....., are dang fine guns too, possibly better for some than the da/sa and dao guns.

As far as the M&P45, FNP-45, those are nice too but neither were for me. I had an FNP-9, nice gun but hated the decocker lever so I was excited the FNP-45 changed it up, but the 45 just didnt feel right to me so I passed on them. Wish I would have liked it though, I really wanted to and was surprised I didn't. Haven't played with the XDM-45 yet, also gonna be a great gun but just not for me.

Either way you picked a great caliber and you will probably buy more 45s anyway so just get what blows your skirt up and have fun with your new toy.

If it were me I would buy a used HK USP .45 or used Sig P220.
I just bought a like new Sig P220 SSS (stainless frame) for $750 and sold the fancy Hogue aluminum grips for $75, final cost $675.
