Call me old fashioned, but to me "woods gun" means revolver. They just seem right for traipsing in the woods. If you were only worried about cougars and 2 legs, I'd consider a .357 service revolver like the 686+ or GP100. If you add the bigger critters in, I think the .45 colt with some Buffalo Bore or stiff handloads is the way to go. The Ruger Blackhawk or Vaquero would both be good choices there, although if you can find one of the old S&W Mountain Guns in .45 colt, they'd be a dandy woods gun, too.It would be used for protection from Moose, cougar, elk, bear and 2 legged bad people.
