Ammo and difficulty finding it is really a problem. A friend was looking for some 44 spl and had a tough time finding it. He ended up getting it for 25+ a box:what: That is steep and something to consider for sure. It certainly is not something to shoot a lot of and he is considering going to a gunshow and buying in bulk. I would not do that I told him.

He figures he will go to gunshop that allows him to use the press and do his own. I think a box or two of ammo will last a long time, if you shoot something else and carry the 44 as ccw. It is a round that has been around for a long time. Something about that round, it is a killer on human beings. I remember several stories about it, 30 years ago and the morgue:what:

He really likes his little bulldog and ankle holster. :)

Both .45 and 10mm bullets can expand to impressive diameters in their best loads but the considerably faster 10 may well crush a bigger actual hole for a given diameter, as well as being liable to whatever smash bone in its path that much more more effectively.

The G20 is, pound for pound, quite possibly the most powerful pistol out right now. 15 rounds of 10mm out of a 6" barrel is a heck of a lot better than 6 or 7 rounds of .357 out of a 4" barrel.

For self defense, I choose the .45ACP. Ammo can be found anywhere at decent prices for JHP and FMJ.

How much self defense do you plan on having to do? Really rough neighborhood? (Sorry, I just couldn't help it ;-)

I have very high respect for .357 but I have to agree with your statement.

Darn, this thread is getting me to think about a 10mm for CCW. And just when I thought I was satisfied and had enough guns :) A less costly alternative would be switching a current 1911 to .45 super.

Self Defense ie-- Night stand, HD, CCW. Sorry, you will find I do not have a sense of humor. Humor is for children.

The .45ACP also excels at IDPA and USPSA.

I own a 10mm, simply as part of the collection.

The 10mm is IMO.. a waste of time for practical purposes. There are better calibers for (Self Defense).

There are also better calibers in better platforms for woods carry, and hunting.

Why would this be? I have yet to run into Zombies, while in the woods.

The feral dogs and coyotes I have shot, along with the Black Bears that have been hunted never complained.

Sure, but what if you're 6 shots into your revolver and that bear is still moving?

Maybe you don't need those extra rounds of 10mm, but you bring a gun into the woods for things you don't expect. For security. Think of those extra rounds as simple security measures. Their purpose is the same as whatever gun you carry at that time: security.

If it make you feel better, then so be it.

I would pick a Single Action revolver like the FA 83 any day, over a 10mm semi-auto.

On this we are going to disagree. So be it. I am not going to change your mind, and after 30 years of shooting, you are not going to change mine.

If you decide to get a 10mm, I would suggest the Double Tap 200gr XTP load for woods carry.
This is the load along with a G20 with 6" KKM barrel, I used to kill five deer.

Choclabman,

I respect your choice for picking something that you are comfortable with. That's the biggest reason to carry any type of firearm. I would carry what I feel comfortable with, whether it be my 686 or my CZ97 (Nothing too big here in E-TX). Familiarity with the tool is much more important than caliber choice.

Read more on the H Fish shooting, added to my exisiting thread. I'll put this here and say:

*** is wrong in AZ at this date and time, allowing folks to have guns on them and not allowing self defense shooting... What a deal. If you have dogs charge you and a man who is crazy and violent and not allowing the jury to know that WOW... Truly a miscarriage of justice from what I read.

:uhoh:

This sums it up and should put the whole discussion in perspective. We are talking 45 and 10mm and something similar. Only 5 deer with the 10mm,:what: I thought that pretty much summed it up for the effectivness of the 10mm. Not only that, but you want him to shoot what you feel is best...LOL:rolleyes:

I voted 10mm all the way.

I'm getting a Glock 20 (full size, not the sub compact G29), and will feel great to have on me.

Right now, the Glock 20 is most likely the best combo between high capacity, high power reliability on the market.

If a caliber is known to go hunting with, then you should logically think it'd be even better for self defense! Especially against PCP drug addicts running at you like a crazed black bear itself!

How is the .45 more accurate, when the 10mm is traveling at much higher velocities? The 10mm is accurate out at 100+ yards! I don't see many people hunting long range with .45's! I wonder why! ;)

The 10mm Glock 20 has more power than a .357 Magnum revolver! And is actually edging closer to the .41 Magnum power! With 16 rounds (there's 15 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber) in the Glock 20, I'd rather have the Glock 20, even above the more powerful .44 Magnum revolver! Specifically because the Glock 20 carries SO much more high power ammunition in it, which is also easier to reload in high-stress situations, and the Glock 20 has less recoil, by far!

Always prepare for multiple targets, ESPECIALLY in the outdoors, where wolves travel in packs, bear families can charge you, etc.

Of course, if you can, get a shotgun or AK-47! lol! But if a pistol alone? Glock 20, all the way, without one doubt in my mind.

By the way, Choclabman: a sense of humor is not childish, it's just another one of our [human] emotions. Too bad you lack it, and even think you're more of an adult because of it? Wow! You must've had a bad childhood. Sorry.

What next? Being happy is for the weak?

Humor is literally good for the mind and body, believe it or not. Look into it. :)

Just For Choclabman...

"...I would suggest the Double Tap 200gr XTP load for woods carry. This is the load along with a G20 with 6" KKM barrel, I used to kill five deer."

******

You killed five deer with one Double Tap 200 gr XTP load? :scrutiny:

I have both in 1911 format, but for CCW .45acp is my choice!

On the other hand, what are Delta Elite's going for nowadays

Not sure but my Colt Delta Elite is not for sale! :D

I just bought one for less then the cost of the transfer... Then again, it was used and abused... in order to pass the "safe handling demo" I had to give it a little love tap with a brass hammer to open back up...

Prices start at about 800... they go up real fast.

Yup!

The 10mm is dead cuz only Glock makes pistols in that caliber; Please don't tell
Dan Wesson
Smith & Wesson
Tanfoglio
Sphinx
Heckler & Koch (MP10)
RIA (soon I'm told)
and many more.

While the 200gr loading of the hot 45 and 10mm have about the same velocity, the 10mm has far better sectional density and a higher ballistic coefficient so it maintains velocity better at long range, drops less, fights wind better and penetrates better as well.

Feeding problems with the 10mm are rarer than in the .40S&W due to the greater stability of the longer round. Overall cartridge length by the way is nearly the same or exactly the same between the 10mm and the 45acp at 1.260 or a bit more depending on which platform you are using. My witness full size is quite comfortable launching 200gr jhps at over 1200fps due to its weight and ergonomics.

I went with the G29. I figured the interchangability of barrels was worth the high price of factory ammo. I also relaod and thought the 10mm would be more flexible. As far as the 10 being dead.... I think it is slowly gaining popularity. The owner of a local gun shop told me he's had to really increase the amount of 10mm ammo he keeps on stock. Whenever I let others shoot mine thier first response is "That recoil isn't as bad as I thought!" and I think the blast is generally more mild than most .40s.
