.460 (S&W) in mag fed lever gun?

Would you buy it? I think it'd make a pretty interesting gun. Ruger or Browning could modify current designs possibly to make a mag fed lever, or even pump gun and it could/should take .45LC and .454 too. The reason I say mag fed of course is becasue alot of the .460 bullets are pointed so a tube fed would be a no-no unless you restrictd the rounds to flat tipped. Versatile and a pretty flat shooter with the .460 I would think. I don't know what recoil would be like, but I imagine you would gain quite a bit of velocity with the .460.
It could fill the role of a brush/dangerous game gun pretty well, maybe 3 or 4 rounds on tap in the magazine.

.460 Weatherby? Too much power for a lever action. It uses a .458" bullet at 2700fps in the Weatherby factory 450 grain bullet with a 2.913" case. 7248 ft/lbs at the muzzle. Max OAL is 3.75".
The .45 Colt, 1.29" case(max OAL is 1.275"), uses a .454" bullet at around 960fps and 460 ft/lbs.
2.15 inches difference between the two loaded. Plus the rimmed vs belted cases. There'd be no way you could use a .45 Colt in a .460 chamber.

Well, they already have it, if by .460 (s&w mag) you mean the .45-70 gov't (essentially same ballistically, IINM), and if by mag-fed, that includes tube mags:

JK, I know what you meant. :neener: Sure, more guns choices is better than less. I probably wouldn't buy one however. I DO want the .454 casull in a lever gun - the Legacy Sports Puma M92 rifle - I want it in 18" carbine config, large loop winter lever, and stainless or nickel plated weatherbeater finish. Presently it doesn't come in that specific config, but if/when it does, I will snap it up. You can fit more in the tube mag than a .460 or .45-70 or .444 or .450 marlin, plus have a smaller action/receiver for a handier gun. I'd guess that .454 casull or .480 ruger is about max cartridge size to keep it in a light/handy config (hence the reason Puma choose those for an upper limit), but I'm no engineer either.

P.S. I also thought at first you meant .460 weatherby mag - I don't want that in ANY gun under 14 pounds in that caliber! :what:

But a pump gun in .45-70? Hmmm, yes, yes, I like it.

Yes, I did mean .460 S&W (XVR whatever).

GunGoBoom: But say you could shoot .460 in it (with flat points if tube fed) and .454?! Sure you'd have the same problems as shooting .38 out of a .357, but nothing cleaning won't take care of right? Plus, you get to shoot 45LC.

No interest huh?
Well I did see Browning makes the BLR in .450 Marlin which is similar to the .460 S&W, so it wouldn't be a far reach to make one for the .460.

A search on wild west guns will turn up a web site where you will find a company that makes a lever action in the s&w 500 caliber. Price is high, but so is quality.

Wild alaska is someone who posts on this board and he has said they are considering a 460 version, he may have said they were working on it but I don't recall and don't want to say otherwise.

I would run a search on lever actions and you should come across the information you are looking for.

Wild west guns also offers some leveractions in 50 alaskan and another round as well I think.

I like the 460 since it uses 454 casull bullets and what not but I doubt I would ever use 45 colt brass in it since that is getting to be a decent jump from the brass to the rifling of the barrel. I like the 460 and 454 casull though because I mostly want to run weak loads in these and that means the brass will last a long while. And being able to load up stronger rounds is nice when in the mood.

I really like the lever gun in 500 s&w though. That is a nice big bullet it throws but the bullets cost a lot so I am thinking the 460 would be plenty.

But money is hard to come by this winter so no need for me to rush.

After they started to make .500 S&W leverguns, I thought to myself perhaps they'll make a .460 S&W levergun, if that happens the action will be long enough to convert to a .357 Maximum levergun (which is what I've always really wanted)... I figure it's just a matter of waiting...
