I'm looking for a modern rifle chambered in 7.62x54R. I want something in the bolt action camp, but not a 91/30 Mosin Nagant or any variant thereof. The only thing I've been able to find so far is the Finnish M28/70. I believe that was the correct model number. :uhoh:

Also, I don't want anything semi-auto. If you guys have any ideas, please shoot them my way. Let me rephrase, please post them here for me. I know that I'm probably asking for the moon, but I guess that makes it part of the fun. :neener:

Thanks everyone. :)

Not that I can think of unless you go self loader. And the Finn gun is a version of the russian 91.

None come to mind; but it could be a fun project to rebarrel a No.4 Enfield....now that surplus 303 is gone.

Don't think I have ever heard of a M28/70, but have the M28/76 and that rifle is a variant of the MN.

Uh, I'd have doubts about that , based on the large case diameter and tapered body of the 7.62x54R, the thrust might be greater than the 7.62x51, which is already iffy for the #4 action. The surplus ammunition now available on the market is probably loaded for Machine-gun use, which means the pressures might be higher than the moderate level that was standard for rifles.

There are no production bolt-action rifles chambered for 7.62x54R that are not Mosin-Nagant actions.

I really with they had a few Savage rifles chambered in x54r. That'd be something. Or if Russia would export, and America would import, the SV-98. Different action, same caliber, 10 round detachable magazine. One can wish.

Could you possibly have a barrel custom bored and chambered for a REM 700 long action.
Could be pricey but it is all I can come up with for the moment.

Court: I sold my PSL due to having trouble finding light ball ammo that wasn't corrosive surplus. Also, I don't really like the typical "upgrade" parts for the MN. It just seems that the current offerings of upgrade parts would be more trouble than it's worth.

Marksman: I've looked at the Vepr. However, it basically operates on the same principle as the PSL. I'm looking for something a little more accurate. What I really would like is the Dragunov Tiger, but I can't afford something like that. :(

If you can find a Mauser set up for rimmed cases you could build a bolt rifle. There was a Siamese Mauser years ago but I havent seen one recently. Also the P14 rifle could be set up for the Russian round.

Why do you want to stay with 7.62x54r? If you want something with the same power factor, buy a 30-06. Then your options are pretty much unlimited... Tons or factory rifles, tons of factory ammo, and reloading would be tons better with the 308 caliber bullets availible and good brass. Boxer primed brass in 54r is expensive and the .311 bullet choices are limited.

If you are shooting surplus ammo that is likely going to be the limiting factor with a Vepr or a bolt gun.

Not many non-semi, non-Mosin rifles out there in 7.62x54R. How about a Winchester 1895 lever action (assuming you have some money to spend)?

Ian: I actually saw one of those old Winchesters chambered for the 54R at one of the gun auction sites. I believe the current bid was for $2,500. A bit too rich for my blood. :(

This is exactly why I didn't keep the PSL. I didn't want to shoot the corrosive surplus, but new light ball was, and still is almost impossible to find. I'm actually thinking about getting rid of all the 54R ammo I have and buying a Yugo M76, chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92x57). Hmmmm, probably not any better an idea.

Ok, I admit, I like firearms that are a bit obscure.

You know there is actually plenty of meat to open a savage magnums bolt face to accept the x54r. It even feeds ok from my .300s magazine box. Tho you have to watch for rim lock, and it isnt all that smooth...ill mess with it a bit more after i make a few dummies.

If for some reason i wanted a random cartridge in a savage action.....this would probably be it, tho a .38-55 or .375 Win would be pretty neat also.
