Today I was lusting after a 1965 Smith model 16 that sold for $3,738. I loves me some K frames but not that much! It would make a really cool gun for rodents though. I emailed Lipsey's to enquire whether they could see the value of making a run of 8 inch or so barreled GP100's chambered in .32 H&R or even .327 Federal. I really enjoy popping rodents with my k frame .38's and admittedly this would not be a significant improvement, just a reinvention of the wheel. It would however be different and interesting. Plus, I would have a new gun for which to work up loads, find bullet moulds etc! What are your thoughts?

I'd prefer the 8" in .357 but yeah the longer the barrel the better. Ruger likes 7.5" more than 8" though, having a 7.5" GP100 to match my blackhawk would be swell.

It would compete with S&W and that's it, but if one is wanting an 8 inch revolver, they're getting it for one purpose and that's competitions. If one wants a competition revolver, they're gonna get a Smith over a Ruger almost every time.

The one long barrel revolver I think would have a place and is a Ruger is a 6 inch SP101. The small size and low weight with the velocity of a 6 inch barrel would make for an amazing field revolver. S&W made K frames with 6 inch barrels and Charter made .357's with 6 inch barrels also, but Ruger never did and they should. I know I'd love one in .327.

many guys like longer barrels for many reasons other than competition... and a sp101 is anything but low weight in its frame size/class.

AND Ruger made security six and GP'100 in 6 inch barrels... and blackhawks in 6.5.. I know they still make some of the gp's n blackhawks in those sizes...

The SP is heavy for its size, but it's still a compact revolver built from the ground up for carrying. Putting a 6 inch barrel in it just maximizes the hitting power of .357 and the range of .327 Magnum in a revolver one is likely to carry.

Lipseys probably thinks I'm nuts. Yeah, I have three 357 Magnum revolvers and two 38 Special revolvers but no 32's. I understand the attraction of the 36 bore and that frankenruger is absolutely awesome.

There are however some advantages to the 32 over the others. Namely it takes less lead. It would be hard to argue powder economy but you can get almost two 32 caliber bullets for the same amount of lead.

Aside from this obvious advantage I can also run the mould for a smaller bullet in my master caster for a longer period of time before it starts to overheat.

The short barrelled guns are certainly adequate. I used to kill gray diggers on a regular basis at 125 yards using a 4 inch 686 with 38 Special cases loaded with 3 grains of 231 and an H&G 51 160 grain swc. My eyes were better then and I shoot the longer barrelled guns better these days.

If it wasn't too pricey, I think I'd buy an 8" GP-100 in 32 H&R, or maybe 327 Federal. It sounds different and fun to me. But I already have all the "practical" guns I want, and I'm pretty old, so "different and fun" might appeal to me more than it does most gun people.:D
