So I have narrowed my search for my first 9mm handgun down to 5 guns. I wanted to know if these following guns are worth the money, and what the pros/cons are.

H&K USP (in addition to the normal USP, anyone have anything opinions on the USP Tactical?)

Beretta 92/M9

Glock 17

Springfield Armory XD9

SigSauer 226

It would be great to have a general opinion of all, or some, of these handguns. I would like to see what other people think are good about them, and if anyone has had problems with them. Thanks

these are 5 mvp's... you can't really go wrong with any of these, just go with the best design you like. they all proved to be really effective (Altough I think HK is too expensive)

As Charles said, all are top notch. The XD is the only one of the group that "may" not be, the DOD tested some a couple of years back and they didn't do so well in durability.

My preference would go the the Sig P226. I'm partial for good DA/SA triggers and the Sig has the best. The Beretta trigger is also good, but the DA reach and pull is a pain. The H&K trigger has a lot of travel in all modes. Accuracy probably goes to the Beretta, with the Sig in 2nd, H&K in 3rd, and the Glock and XD about equal and coming in 4th. The Glock is probably going to be the most durable of the bunch, lasting 50-100k rounds easily.

I would choose the Sig or the Glock.

Well done! Your short list contains 5 excellent handguns. If at all possible, go to a range and rent all of these. See which one(s) feels the most comfortable in your hands, which one do you shoot best with, which one makes you smile when you shoot?

My recommendation: The HK! But be careful, I've never met anyone who only bought one. As for price, you get what you pay for. (When you can find them, the used HKs are normally well taken care of and in excellent shape.) Good luck with your choice and happy shooting!

5 Good choices for a full size nine.

1. HK - excellent weapon, expensive gun, expensive mags ($39.99 new at CDNN), oh buy the way did I mention it was expensive. You get what you pay for but there is also no reason to overpay for a name.

2. Beretta 92 - excellent weapon with an excellent pedigre and several years of duty, magazines everywhere (from $9 used to $29.99 New Nickel at CDNN), large gun for a 9mm w/15 round cap.

3. Glock 17 - hard to believe but now a classic, cheap mags ($21.99 New at CDNN and still seem them for less eslewhere), solid and easy to operate, easy on the wallet (my choice on this list for overall package-actually a 19 would be the choice)

4. XD9 - nice gun, easy on the wallet, had some early rusting problems and the finish on the used ones does not look like it holds up all that well, I don't like its trigger reset, otherwise a good gun for the $, cheap mags ($19.99 new at CDNN)

5. Sig 226 - Another classic, Sigs just don't do it for me, don't like the decocker system, but this is another high quality gun I would not hesitate to use. moderately expensive mags ($24.99 used - $33.99 new at CDNN) sometimes you can find a great deal on a used on but new is a tad on the high side.

Beretta 92 of course this could be because it was our issued weapon for a long time until we change over to the sig quite awhile ago and I had to turn the beretta in. But after only stating a couple of thouson times how I miss the Beretta the wife got me a 92fs Inox a couple of years ago for x-mas. It is a large weapon but if we talking about ccw they are all large for me. At the range i like a weapon that bigger also it serve as my bed side gun. Just check them out and get the one you like. Like i said it's my bed side gun the sig's goes into the safe when we get home. On her side of the bed is her first duty weapon a s&w mod 10. The point is what ever one you like best is the best one to get.

be safe

(Altough I think HK is too expensive)

Yeah that's the only thing that is kinda setting me back on H&Ks.

Im kinda trying to stay under $750, but the cheapest H&K 9mm ive seen was like $820. I heard they are good guns, but i'm just leaning towards the 226.

i have owned or shot the ones you listed, i believe that they are all worth a good hard look and really it comes down to what you like best. i personally don't like da/sa guns so the 92 and the sig p226 would be out of the running for me. uthe h&k's are great but they are a little rich for my blood when i can get a glock or an xd that will do the same things for less, and good luck trying to find and afford replacement parts for an h&K.

i personally would go with the xd, i own 2 and i love em.

I personally prefer the HP to the 92. The others are good choices. I like the sig and HK over the plastics. This advice is worth exactly what it cost you.

HK's are too pricy IMO, but great non the less.

XD is pretty neat, and can be had on gunbroker for not much more than $400.

Beretta is great, and IMO the most accurate of of the bunch. They can be had for not much more than $400 on GB also.

Sigs are great, but pricy, and have a pretty high bore axis.

Glock is a accurate and super dependable gun. I started out on Glocks and wish I had not. The reason is the grip angle is so much more different than other guns out there. So for IDPA, I had a hard time relearning the "standard" grip angle of the 1911.

May I suggest another one not on your list......CZ 75. I'm not sure what your budget is, but IMO...just as good as the HK/Sigs/Beretta at a smaller cost. Here is a pretty good read.

Of those, I would buy an XD 9MM. I really like the XD's. The others are quality guns, I just don't care for them.

HK great gun but entirely to big . Would be a super range and home gun IMO. I would never own one because of size and weight..

2. Beretta 92 - excellent weapon with an excellent pedigre and several years of duty, magazines everywhere (from $9 used to $29.99 New Nickel at CDNN), large gun for a 9mm w/15 round cap.

That's two decades of duty actually. My dad has one ad loves it. The 92fs would be my first choice, although it would be the biggest and heaviest, so that might be a consideration if you pan to CCW.

Sigs are great, but pricy, and have a pretty high bore axis.

May I ask what you mean by this?

Also, now that I look at the CZ's they seem like pretty good guns (not sure why i didnt see it before). All I need to ask now is, does anyone know if the CZ 75 SP-01 is worth it, compared to the CZ 75 B?

Thanks all.

You want an HK? Get an HK! Just 3 weeks ago, I drove about an hour for a face to face and drove home with a LNIB HK P30 for $625. (Also gave him two old Wilson Combat 47D mags.) The thing didn't even have 50 rounds through it.

Now I have to find another one, hopefully a P30L, since my left-handed son has "claimed" this gun as his own. TOTALLY ambi.

I've owned and/or rented almost every 9mm on the market. This P30 is absolutely the sweetest overall 9mm I've ever had the pleasure of shooting. Period. Dot.

The "HK" forum has an excellent "for sale or trade" section that can definitely hook you up IF you're patient. IMHO, right now is an excellent time to pick up slightly used weapons due to our sucky economy. Everyone is scrambling for cash, and unfortunately, weapons are almost always the first thing to go. (Think: pawnshop) BTW, I recently bought a LNIB HK45 (with 5 mags) as well from a college kid for $700.

If you've got cash, right now you'd be missing out on a great opportunity if you bought new. Just my .02 cents. Cash is king.

Last thing, I love the XD9s too. Picked up two of them used (both subcompacts) at Gander Mountain for $295 each. Great gun cars where they stay.

But for your range baby, you've got to go with the HK! Decide to spend less? Grab the CZ SP-01, best 9mm value on the market.

Look up manofsteele here on the forum. He can get you any CZ you want at a great price. He lives near CZ.

Shotgun12321,

A low bore axis means that the barrel is positioned lower in the frame of the pistol design. This reduces the perceived "muzzle flip" of recoil, but the recoil does not just disappear. Instead, the recoil is moved more into your wrist and shoulder. I've owned several pistols over the years with very low bore axiss such as a Steyr M357, CZ P-01, and CZ-P-06(converted to .357sig) and shooting for long durations with powerful calibers really takes its toll on your body with a low bore axis pistol, and I stay in outstanding physical shape. With a higher bore axis like that of the H&K or Sig, the recoil results in slightly more muzzle flip, but it is a more comfortable recoil feeling. Your wrist and forearm recoil in a more natural resisting motion. This is a big reason why large magnum caliber revolvers maintain a high bore axis so that the shooter can more comfortably absorb the recoil. I can shoot Double Tap .357sig out of my Sig P229 probably 3x longer than I could with my Steyr, and that was all based on bore axis.

9mmNATO pistols...

From your choices I'd get a Beretta M-9a1 or maybe a SIG Sauer P-226R DAK.

These 9mmNATO pistols have good features and can be a great weapon for target use or CC/protection.

PS: the Glock models are good too, but you should be skilled and trained before using them. ;)

All I need to ask now is, does anyone know if the CZ 75 SP-01 is worth it, compared to the CZ 75 B?

Yes, very much so. I own and love both but the SP-01 fits my hand better, the 75b is a tad small but still very comfortable Needless to say handle both, either is a great choice.

i have the SP-01, I love it to death but I actually found out that the CZ P-01 fits me better and it's my next purchase.

Plus I find it more accurate for some reason... (the P-01)

I strongly urge you to follow Benderx4's advice. Find a rental range (or are those mostly a southeastern phenomena?), or at least check out each one at a gunstore or gun show for fit, feel, and sight picture.

Actually, none of the pistols you mention work well for me; they all use double-stack magazines. Both of my 9x19s are single-stackers: a S&W 639 & a Firestar. If you find you aren't comfortable with a double-stack, three of the manufacturers you mentioned have single-stack 9mms out there (SIG 225, H&K P7, and the Beretta Brigadier, IIRC).

Note: of the doublestack 9mms, I've fired, only two actually fit well; the XD and the CZ75.
