Does anyone know of any testing done on this round and its ballistic performance? I cannot seem to be able to find any information on the performance of this round.

I can't geive you any specific test data, but Silver Bear is a quality Russian manufacturer. I've fired their FMJ in my Makarovs and CZ for several years, and it's good ammo.

I use Speer Gold Dots for my concealed carry...will take a look at the Silver Bear.

I shoot the silver bear hollow points only because the brown bear and regular silver bear 9x18 keyhole. Does anyone know if Seller and Belloit 9x18 is steel core?

PS I shot my silverbear 94 gr HP with my friend at the range. He was shooting his 9x19 parabelum and the silver bear made nice crisp holes in the target while the 9mm were not so pretty; I likened it to shooting a 38 special round in a target and a .357 the .357 and silver bear make very clean holes in the target. Don't know if this means anything?

??? I use Brown Bear and Silver Bear...whatever is available when I am buying...and haven't seen any key-holing with either of my CZ-82s.

I have always had good luck with the brown and silver bear as well but I think I got a bad lot of the stuff because it keyholes; although it is probably good for self defense; imagine getting hit with a bullet traveling sideways...Ouch who ever is on the receiving end will think he's getting hit with a 45

I live on silver bear. Both FMJ and HP. Both shoot perfectly in my CZ-82 and my PA-63. No keyhole or anything. As for self defense, I am just as comfortable using Hornady XTP or Silver Bear HP for self defense.

That is something that always confused me. If you look at any of the advertisements, it shows the silver bear FMJ at 1000 fps and 204 ft/lbs. Which is about right with a 94 grain bullet that they advertise. However; they show the silver bear hollow point with the same 94 grain bullet and same 1000 fps have 255 ft/lbs. Obviously, they must be testing from a longer barrel.OR; there's a formula based on the expansion of a hollow point to become large in diameter than it started in. I.e. If a 9mm makarov is .365 in diameter; however; it changes to .405 upon expansion, there may be a formula to estimate it's virtual ft/lbs.

Can you post a link to the advertisement you are referring to? I am no physics genius, but FPE is the energy delivered at the muzzle, expansion has nothing to do with the formula. Energy=Weight x Velocity Squared Divided by 450395.

I agree. You can go to just about any sight that sells ammo. I.e. Go to sportsmansguide.com ; go to the ammo section; point on the 9x18 ammo and click on silver bear fmj or hp, or any of the brands. Just about all of them will list the weight, velocity, and energy. The confusing part is that if it was a longer barrel; e.g. 7" instead of 3"; the velocity would/could increase. Thus increasing the delivered energy. But when both the fmj and the hp state 1000 fps and the weight on both is 94 grain; and the energy for one is 204 ft/lbs and the other is 255 ft/lbs; that get's confusing.

I understand that expansion in itself doesn't affect energy. However; we live in a virtual world. Just like horsepower used to be measured at the rear, it is measured differently now. And a 150 hp motor today can have more effective power than a 200 hp motor 40 years ago. Well, maybe it's possible that the "Virtual" energy is different. I.e. an expanded 94 grain hp bullet has the virtual energy of a 115 grain fmj. This is the only think I can think of; other than straight out false advertising. Anyway, most sites that sell ammo list the velocity and energy. Sportsmansguide.com is very good at listing the info.
