Firstly, how can I find out definitively whether or not Utah is an open carry state? I have read and heard things both in the affirmative and the negative. I want to know the truth.

Secondly, if my state no longer allows open carry (they used to -- my Dad, as a teenager, worked in a restaurant where his boss openly carried a nickeled .44 Mag because of the large amounts of money he had to deposit.), what can I do to help change that?

Yes, I know all about the downfalls of open carry. But by hell, it ought to be legal in all 50 of the states.

Anybody in the know?

Wes

Wes, we are allowed limited open carry. Just depends on where you are. Some cities have ordinances banning it.

Other then that, you're fine, but expect to be hasseled depending where you are.

According to a local attorney, Mitch Vilos, if you have a CCW open is legal, period, outside of secure or Federal areas.

I suggest contacting him directly, he can point you to the specific wording in the Utah firearm code. I also suggest anyone in Utah get his book on Utah gun laws.

Thanks Ben.

I'll look into giving Mitch Vilos a call. Maybe I'll ask a local attorney as well. It would sure be nice to not have to take off my gun when I leave the house.

Wes

Wes, do that.

Mitch does ONLY firearms cases, and shoots a lot of IDPA, guns are his thing.
He's been known to walk around open carry with fully stuffed double bandoliers across his chest. Says he's had interesting reactions to it.

As I said before:
Everyone in Utah should have his book for a reference.
