MARYSVILLE, Wash. – A father arrested after his 6-year-old daughter was fatally shot in their Washington state home allegedly told authorities he had been drinking double shots of vodka while cleaning his guns.

Court papers say Richard Peters told detectives he had asked his daughter, Stormy, to bring him the .45-caliber handgun Sunday. He said he must have pulled the trigger, and the girl fell to the floor. She was pronounced dead Monday.

Bail for Peters, 42, was set Monday at $250,000. He has been arrested for investigation of first-degree manslaughter.

His attorney, Annika Carlsten, requested that Peters be released from jail, The Herald newspaper of Everett reported. She argued that Peters isn't a flight risk, or a danger to himself or the community.

"It's obviously a tragedy for all involved and my primary concern is for my client and his family," Carlsten told The Associated Press on Tuesday night, declining to discuss any specifics.

The Snohomish County sheriff's office said two other children were removed from the home by Child Protective Services.

#1 - Guns and drinking don't mix.

#2 - Ammunition and cleaning don't mix.

He "said he must have pulled the trigger"? Yeah, but if he'd put the ammo away before he broke out the booze and the gun oil, it would have just been a stupid action and not a deadly one.

Very, very sad that a little girl had to die - and a family has to suffer - because of one man's negligence.

True, the "antis" might use this, however, if there were no guns at all, he might have gone for a drive, killed her and another family of 6.

My prayers go out to him and his family.

There's "having a drink" and there's "getting ****ing wasted"

The first is fine to mix with firearms. The second isn't.

Terrible tragedy......when will people learn (never):fire: I really hope the guy suffers terribly for the rest of his life. There's accidents and then there just down right stupidity.........

It says he asked the girl to bring him the gun, he pulled the trigger.......the gun was loaded.

He will wake up every morning and go to bed every night thinking of his daughter.

I hope he stops drinking as he may now drink himself to death.

One good thing is for sure: God took her to be with Him as she was not at an age to make a decision to deny Christ (Biblical). She's sure in a better place now than this place.

drinking double shots of vodka while cleaning his guns.
That's BS. Every idiot who accidentally shoots someone claims that they were "cleaning their guns". Last time I checked, there isn't really a way to clean a gun with ammunition in it. Every idiot uses this as an excuse. I'm so sick of people blaming guns for their stupid decisions. My guess is that he was either that special kind of a-hole that points guns at his family, or he was playing Jack Bauer. But I'll bet you money that he wasn't "cleaning his guns"

"I was having double shots of vodka and washing my car, and I must have run over 6 people and a dog."

Still, my prayers are with him and his family.

I agree, there are some real "SICKOS" out there!

I can just imagine some would be drunk, and/or drugged and "bossing people" around with their LOADED WEAPON (IQ plays a lot into this as well). Pointing the pistol at family and ordering them to do this, or don't do that!

BANG!

Let's CALL it an "ACCIDENT."

Well, if that's the case, then it is even MORE reason why she's in a better place now than what she may have been experiencing and/or may have had to grow up with!

I hate to get all religious on you fine folks, however, I firmly believe GOD does things for a reason. We, many times, cannot see the reason now, nor may we EVER see the reason while we are here. However, someday when we meet Him, our Maker, We shall "KNOW just as we are KNOWN!"
We will THEN be able to see how all the pieces in this life fit together for His glory!

I'm not saying he meant to shoot her and cover it as an "accident". But he may have been the kind of person to boss people around with a gun, while being careless with his trigger finger. It sounds weird, but some people are weird.

Same bull**** that gives these hoplophobe liberals fuel for their fire. I hope this idiot gets locked up for his ignorance (drinking+guns) and laziness (gets his girl to handle his handgun)...This is how it will start...

*sigh*

I'm having a random anti-moment here: Can we incorporate IQ scores into the NICS check? This wasn't a case of drunk, this was a case of idiot.

I hope he finds his solace.

Liquor Safety

Okay, we'll take this as a safety moment.

Don't get boozed up and handle dangerous machinery.

Cars, guns, power tools, and so on.

However, the only way this is "gun related" is that was his choice of dangerous machinery to handle while getting plastered.

Getting plastered and [fill in the blank] don't mix.

Judging by the vectors already established in this thread, it's not going to wind up anywhere near the High Road.

So let's just cap it here, shall we?
