A guy I know claims he's a sniper.

I have just come to realize something, I have ZERO idea why we're wasting so much bandwidth, time, and storage space on this loser. Any ideas, or can we move on now?

I'm guessing that there's a real gun thread in here somewhere, right?

Even the OP thinks the guy in question is full of baloney. So how did we get to six pages -- and counting -- on something as nebulous as that, pray tell?

I had a buddy years back who was a marine sniper in the first Iraq war (Desert Storm), he would never talk about it, the only thing he did was show me a picture of him at work in prone position with an 8" pile of shells next to him.

I didn't know what to think! Right away my bs detector exploded and I just wanted to corner him and ask him a ton of questions like, "I'm assuming you're in the military...what branch? Where did you go to basic? What weapon were you assigned to at basic? What's your MOS? What company are you in? Who's your drill instructor?" I myself have never served but I think I would know fake answers if I heard them, for instance if he said he was assigned a Remington 700 at basic instead of an M16A2.
There is no shortage of Walter Mitty types out there. E.g., there is at least one person on this board with a 'covert operations' handle who, judging by his posts, is obviously a teenage wannabe. Well, big deal ... it's harmless.

Such posers are more to be pitied than scorned. I wouldn't attempt to humiliate or embarass your acquaintance ... what would be the point? He is no doubt insecure enough already, and your own ego is presumably healthy enough that you don't need to worry about his antics.

a guy i know is a former marine(medical discharge for wounds sustained in iraq and ptsd) now hes not the brightest guy but a nice guy and very trustworthy

about the only thing he really knows is combat he is currently working as an explosive ordinance instructor for the marines as a civilain contractor. he got an offer from a friend of a friend that works for a company similar to XI(blackwater) and they were looking for guys to "handle" some local villagers so they could build a resort on the ivory coast. they said they would cover all expenses buy him any weapons he wanted and 60k for 3 months of work. he said no after seriously debating it for 3 weeks because he didnt feel comfortable dealing with money coming from like a 5th party that he would never meet. the whole thing was very sketch but as far as i could tell was legit i was there to witness the phone calls and listened to a few voicemails.

there is stuff that happens like this for the SOF type but is just plain sketchy and wierd so he could be telling the truth. but most of the people that this happens to are former military and have alot of training. not the geeky kids from high school that lie all the time

i had a kis in my drafting class in high school that clained to be a vol. fire fighter and would tell all these stories of going into houses then i pressed the bs button and told him i know he isnt because you arent allowed to go into structures in NC till you turn 18 and get certified

he also claimed to have a porsche cabriolet also bs some people are just full of crap because they know they arent doing anything with their lives

Why is it always sniper that everyone that's not legit claim to be when they lie about being in the military?

Well, there are a lot of frauds out there in our society, but I've found that most of them are claiming that they are "Navy SEALS"

In my time in patrol I think I've arrested no less than a dozen "Navy SEALS". Most of these guys have fewer teeth than they have fingers, and the vast majority have never been in the military. But, apparently you are supposed to get special treatment when you tell the cops that you are a SEAL?

As of the past 9 months or so I've had a few resistances with a few guys who claim to be "full-time MMA fighters". Given how easily these guys were taken into custody, I suppose I ought to sign up for the UFC?

Posers have never impressed me. Be who you are, and live with it. At the very least, don't pretend to be something you obviously aren't! For some reason a lot of posers seem to be drawn to somewhat gun-related claims (sniper, SEAL, mercenary, etc).

I hope this works, after reading this thread I have this stuck in my head...

Navin R. Johnson: Nothing? Are you kidding? Page 73 - Johnson, Navin R.! I'm somebody now! Millions of people look at this book everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print - that makes people. I'm in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.
[the Sniper points to Navin's name in the phone book]
Sniper: Johnson, Navin R... sounds like a typical bastard.

Sniper: Die, you random son of a bitch.
[shoots at Navin but hits a display of oil cans]
Navin R. Johnson: He hates these cans!

Earlier tonight I was at a going away dinner for my niece's husband, who is leaving for a couple of months of training, followed by a year long tour in Afghanistan. He was in Desert Storm, and did a tour in Iraq in 2003-2004. Someone at dinner asked him what kind of camera he was taking to Afghanistan, and he said none, "I don't want to remember that sh*t". That seems to be the prevailing attitude among people who actually have to pull the trigger on people.

All the ex Navy SEALs and whatnot that I've ever met seem to be awfully familiar with cookstoves and dishwashers.

I too am a sniper. I have been lying on my deck in full camfage with my
Remibgton 700, .308 with 48" bull
barrel. I have been waiting all morning for General Gray Squirrel to show himself so that I can get a head shot.......

I been doing the same thing, but with a 22-250. The squirrel battalions have been performing raids on my corn, and the suicide rabbit charges get put down really well. Last week they had a pig on the battlefront. leading their attack. They haven't tried that again after it was taken out of commission and recovered by allies to replenish supplies.

I've met a few guys that I knew were Army Unit Designated Marksmen in Iraq, none of them mention what they've done.

I've met a bunch of USMC brothers that now work for the DoD and that's all they said, they're the real deal.

I've also met guys who talk about their Purple Hearts incessantly, talk about the "dozens" of Haji they offed, confused cities and countries (Discussing fighting in both Kandahar and Fallujah in the same tour) and almost all of them were some sort of ultra-secret ninja assassination hit team. Gigantic BS detectors.

Most guys that have truely seen the ****, and I have not, do not discuss it with others unless they KNOW they have also seen the ****. I once saw a guy at the local watering hole wearing a USMC hat, went over and said howdy. He told me he was a Scout/Sniper that did "ultra secret" "black op" missions. I asked if he was recruited as a Sniper and he, of course, was. I then asked if he was in 4th Batallion on the Island, since that's where pre-Recon team recruits go, and he was. That pretty much ended the conversation. He bought me a few beers, told more egregious lies, and then my friends came.

4th Batallion.. I wonder if he carried their little red "sniper death kill ammo" box around for them. :)

While VeriSEAL is down, their is an online spec ops community. As I'm not spec ops (other than being a pre-BUDS seal, authorized by Kennedy himself ;-) ) I don't patronize it. A guy I went to school with said he was a SEAL, I went there and posted his name and such. Turned out he was the real deal, got his SEAL class number and everything, had 3 Purple Hearts and some of the guys on the site knew him personally. A real bad ass MF, but you'd never know it to meet him, a real gentleman of a guy.

I was at a bar close to where I-75 goes across the state line into Tennessee. I spied a serviceman in uniform. i assumed he was a guardsman that had been on maneuvers since there is a large range that the national guard just a few miles into the woods here. he was wearing the bdu's with the tear away velcro patches. then i noticed his rank, Chief Senior Master Sergent. this guy diddnt look a day over 21. then i noticed there was no flag, on either shoulder. he on one shoulder a sniper patch, a recon patch, and a screaming eagle patch, from the 101st airborne unit at ft. Campbell KY. Then I noticed his other shoulder had an Army JROTC patch. i was sitting there thinking, how has no one else noticed?

I shoot a Marine Core match every year (they don't have enough Marines so they let in civilians). Most of these guys spend as much time talking about camo, stalking, tools, cloths, etc, as they do about actual shooting.

I'm guessing these guys are real snipers, but I don't like to ask too many questions other than about the guns, ammo and actual shooting.

And of course any space shuttle door gunner should be able to produce his unit badge.
