So I am a strong believer that when it comes to safeties on a carry gun they should be passive, as in a grip safety like that on the Springfield XD. Things that are deactivated just by drawing and firing the gun correctly. So this got me thinking, most modern guns have a system where they will not fire with the slide out of battery. What if a holster was designed to take the slide just slightly out of battery?

Would this cause reliability issues with it partially extracting a round every time you holster the gun?

I am pretty sure that if this was a viable idea it would exist but thought it was a cool idea to float.

Proper gunhandling works everytime it's tried.

Guns don't "go off by themselves," so designing a holster to address a total and complete non-issue won't sell very well.

.

It may cause the gun to stick that way when you bring it out. When I holster, I always put my firing thumb up behind the back of the slide to prevent the act from possibly knocking the gun out of battery.
Interesting idea though. You should make and test a prototype!

Yeah, and when have you EVER seen one being worn by someone? Or even at a gunstore?

Exactly !

The most common types of carry weapons available today are plenty safe in the hands of a safety oriented person and holstered properly.
In fact, because of various manufacture designed safety systems now in common use and the plethora of holsters that are gun-specific, there is absolutely no reason to make carrying more difficult or complex.

For example, the "scary" cocked 'n locked Colt Commander that I carry also resides in a Milt Sparks VMII holster in which the thumb safety sits in a formed depression in the leather itself. In the holster, the thumb safety cannot be moved, and the entire trigger guard is enclosed in leather.
That's plenty safe for me.

Then there's pistols like the XD series that have several different safety features built in, yet, the pistol is "on call" in an instant with no fumbling or looking for levers to press.

We don't need no more "safety" features, because if the pistol I carry weren't "dangerous", I wouldn't carry it.

Contrary to some people's fears, pistols do not go off by themselves accidentally.

I don't need to store my pistols with the slide out of battery because my my brain and training will keep me from putting my finger on the trigger unintentionally. Placing the firearm inside a regular holster will add additional security by covering the trigger.
Carrying out of battery is just inviting bad things to happen, it an get caught like that, your clothes can snag on the additional edges, lint and dirt will get inside -causing malfunctions and jams. This is what I think will be the biggest danger.

Possibly for LEO only? Perhaps. But I doubt that the total number of LEOs serving in the USA v. actual cases of successful gun-snatches are really that high. Seems like current designs work well enough.

And turns on the laser too...LOL!

Actually there was one, and maybe more. But the inventor withdrew it from the market because he was worried about someone having an accidental discharge.

I wouldn't care for a holster that held the slide out of battery, because when I drew the pistol it might not go into battery... :uhoh:
