I jiust got back from the range. I went to sight-in a new scope on my AR (M-4gery). It was OK. Got it sighted and that was that. Then I dragged out my CMP Springfield M1 for a little exercise.
I have used the 5.56mm and the 7.62 Nato in social situations (long ago and far away). But, I gotta tell ya, shooting that Garand really is just a totally different experience. This is a battle rifle. You strap it on and ride it until that great "PING". I was shooting groups that were as tight as the scoped AR. Ah, life is good.
Get one, they ain't makin' any more.

My dad owns a Garand. I love shooting it for the reason you noted.
