A takedown 22LR bolt rifle

Recently I was looking for a .22LR rifle, and generally narrowed it down to Ruger American Rimfire or CZ 457. However, because of certain circumstances, I need to keep the length to a minimum when transporting the rifle. Neither Ruger nor CZ offer a takedown version (Ruger has a takedown 10/22, but the bolt action, as much as I can tell). Does anyone know of a .22 rifle that has a removable barrel? Preferably not a chassis gun.

maybe its like a take down single shot .22's and they just are starter guns that are not cool enough to be popular. The SA-22 may be the best starter semi .22 that ever existed, lots of great single shots and repeating turn bolts though.

You can remove the barrel from any of them but its nice to buy one that is good enough to use with the ones they normally stick on them.

One of the CZ scout models would work if you can make a pouch or a case to hold the two halves . You might want to add to the LOP and shorten the fore-arm to make both halves the same length . Not sure if this model uses the barrel change system some of their models do , if it does you could really shorten the fore-arm and make something really compact .

Not a bolt action, but the Marlin Model 70 Papoose line, blue and stainless, come apart easily and break down into small pieces.

Some are probably still available at dealers.

Do you have a general or specific length in mind for the disassembled rifle? For example, have you selected a particular carry case?

My own preferred discreet case is designed to carry a mandolin.

If you're on a budget, just about any .22 using the single-screw stock mount (as Nightlord mentioned) could be made to fit if you're willing to shorten the forend and barrel as needed.

Going this route, you can usually find a suitable knob in the specialty fasteners section of a decent hardware or home improvement store to replace the stock screw and save the trouble of carrying a screwdriver.

Personally, I'd prefer keeping the barrel in the action and achieving takedown via the stock. My current favorite in the takedown .22 class is my 1906 Winchester pump.

I didn't know CZ made a bolt TD rifle??? My Scout is not a TD.

While technically that's true , any rifle that can be separated by removing the barreled action from the stock is functionally a take down . just make both halves the same length and throw in a screwdriver with the proper size bits for the action screws and your good to go .A saxophone or clarinet case or a short pouch and your set .

Nope, that won't work for me. Thus requires removal of the CZ Scout stock first. Not nearly as convenient and practical as my tooless 10/22 TD and a soft coronet case.

A great many of the vintage bolt-action Mossbergs, Marlins, and Savages from the teens through the seventies were designed as "takedowns" whereby unscrewing a single large knob or nut below the stock would allow the action to be lifted out.

The Marlin 25N and 25MN only use one screw to attach the stock to the barrel/receiver, too.

The Marlin Midget Magnum is a factory complete version of that idea. Loosening one thumbscrew is not much different than loosening a barrel nut, with the benefit of the barrel always anchored to the receiver.

FWIW, here's an example of the homemade stock takedown knob I came up with for my TC Encore carbine. Instead of fiddling with removing the two forend Allen bolts and the hinge pin, this knob gets the stock off and on much more quickly and without tools.

I mainly use the regular Allen bolt to fasten the stock because it doesn't stick out the bottom, but the knob's a handy alternative.

It shouldn't be difficult to work up something like this to replace a .22 bolt action's stock screw.

Looks like you might want to check out the new "ranger" 22 lever action from Winchester . Little over 5 pounds , take down fairly good looking , and $ 419 suggested retail .This might be a winner .

Just as I was posting this, Hammerli added a "Force B1" rifle, which has a removable barrel.

UPDATE: It's not quite what I want, because the handguard is not removable and makes one of the quasi-takedown parts too long. But B1 is an interesting product nonetheless.

I can’t think of a modern bolt action gun specifically designed to be a pull apart-take down like many of the others described above. CZ offered switch barrel/caliber change options, maybe thats one you could check out.

Owning a Rossi 62A (Win 1906 clone), Marlin 39A, Browning Auto-22, and a Remington No. 4, I know how handy a true take down .22 can be.

Good luck with your search.

Stay safe.

It appears the OP has now answered his own question. I was going to offer an AR 22 as an alternative. 2 pins to push to break it down or assemble and that's it.
