I have always seen academy as the best of the big box sporting goods stores, in terms of firearms.

Their ammo prices have always been the best I've seen, even better than online most of the time.

Their gun prices have always been the best in some cases, and very reasonable in others.

I have seen in the past few years some slow changes. First they got in a single Bushmaster Carbon-15 rifle, w/o sights, optics ready. Now, they have a full line of Bushmaster AR's, as well as a couple AR pistols I've seen.

Also, I have seen more and more small carry guns appear in the display case over the years. Now they sell "tactical" full-size autholoaders, as well as the new Ruger .380, which is obviously a straight-up carry gun.

On their website now they have 2 sections for shotguns: "All Shotguns" and "Home Defense Shotguns."

What else have you seen at your local Academy's?

Is there some new corporate policy behind this, or are they just smart enough to follow the money?

hmmm, I hadn't even noticed, I'll go check my local out before church tonight and see what it looks like.

When I went in the other day, I noticed they had started carrying Sig pistols. I wish they'd carry just the most rudimentary of reloading supplies (primers, common powders, maybe some handgun bullets and just a few rifle bullets). No reason to get crazy, just a few basic things for the average reloader. I wish they'd STOP carrying some of the "pimp" Taurus pistols (the ones with the gold-plating).

Academy around here does pretty good. Their gun prices are reasonable. Their ammo is just a touch higher than WallyWorld (but more of a selection.) Their CS is better than average which is not saying a lot. There is one gentleman who seems to love guns and enjoy helping others enjoy them.

They won't do any special orders though. At the store near me, what you see is what you get. Too bad I don't see much that attracts my eye. I'd buy from them if they had what I wanted.

Just Gander Mountain here.

It's called that because you come in, take a gander, and leave.

Closest to me is Gander Mountain or "Gouger Mountain" as I like to call it because they are so darn expensive. About 100 miles from me is a Bass Pro Shop in Auburn, NY

The closest thing to me is a Sports Authority. NO guns, NO ammo. Although I did notice that they have moved their BB guns, airsofts and paintball guns into the cases that used to have real guns.

Fortunately for me I've got Lou's Police Supply, and a Bass Pro with a range not too far away.

No Academy here either. Last time I was in Nashville, I stocked up on 9mm - great place and I would trade any 3-4 Gander's for them in a heartbeat.

Gander seems determined to not have what I'm looking for, and if by some twist of fate they made a stocking mistake and have what I need, they want 10% more than just about anyone else would.

If that was all, then they must've had it on "Clearance."

We have a Dick's Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, a local shop called Wiley's Outdoor Sports, and even about to get a Bass Pro Shop... but NO ACADEMY :banghead:

I have emailed them and pleaded that they put a store in the Huntsville area... but apparently to no avail. I love that stinking store, too.

Evidently at academy there is a strict rule of "nobody under the age of 21 can handle a handgun", The guy I talked to said it was Federal Law.

Our Academy used to have the greatest ammo prices. I sure miss that $3.96 a box for 9mm Blazer, or $3.86 for Monarch 223. I have heard some of the stupidest gun advice in the world come across the counter from the guys working there though.

Your all lucky to have something at all now days. In Illinois your lucky to be able to buy a steak knife without some kind of registration.

There was a Galyan's open here for a short time, but Dick's bought them out...Handguns went away when the Galyan's stock was depleted.

I have noticed the local Gander (Gouger) Mountian is starting to carry the AR-15 styles/brands, about 2-3 years ago they didn't have any of those..and they had some Mosin-Nagants (M-44 version), too.

I thought I remember hearing something about whatever corporation that owns Academy being anti gun? The Academy's in my area have seen a $3 rise per box in Blazer 9mm aluminum within the last 6 months. They are now $9.99 a box, which is pretty lame for 9mm.

Take a "gander" at the "mountain"ous prices. Sheesh, when GM was just a mail-order outfit (other than Wisconsin-irony) I did a lot of business with them. They were cheaper than Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, and even Sportsman's Guide. Now than I have a showroom within 5 miles, their prices suck! I still go in there to look, but rarely buy anything.

Academy is not anti-gun. You are thinking REI. They are a big supporter of Anti-Gun organizations. The rise in ammo prices isn't them trying to run off gun sales, it's because the cost of the materials that the MFG use is going up, thus the customer pays more.

around me, if it ain't reasonable at a gun shop, and if Wal-Mart don't sell it, then you best order it.
