Well, a lot of threads have piled up about what accuracy to expect out of an SKS, AK, Mosin-Nagant, and so forth. What I'm wondering is how the different Russian guns (ones that are legal to own, anyhow) perform as compared to each other. Are M44s more accurate than SKSs? What about reliability of VEPR .308s as compared to a 91/30? Is the AK more durable than a M38?

Anyone with a lot of experience with Soviet/Russian/CIS weaponry is welcome to chime in...

(Why specifically Russian, you ask? They're 1. inexpensive, 2. widely available, 3. used all over the world, 4. inexpensive, 5. built like tanks, and 6. don't cost much.) :D

I have about 30 Russian/Finnish rifles. Most models I have at least 2 of. Here are the average group sizes at 100 yards that I get with them:

SKS - 3"
M91 - 4"
M91/30 - 3"
M38 - 3"
M44 - 4"
Finnish M27 - 2"
Finnish M28 - 2"
Finnish M28/30 - !.5"
Finnish M39 - 2"
Finnish Tikka M91 - 4" (should be better but the 1 I own has a bad bore)
Finnish Tikka M91/30 - 1.5"

With the exception of the SKS, these rifles are all built on the Mosin receiver. All of my finnish rifles are build on older hex Russian M91 receivers. As you can see, the Finns turned these Russian rifles into accurate firearms.
I only use surplus ammo so anyone with match ammo should be able to do well in regards to accuracy. I would highly recommend a Finn M39 as these rifles are highly accurate and currently at a pretty good price.
