And those of us from Georgia Tech used to call you Turkey Buzzards......

Monkey, most of the local clubs are membership affairs and you can let yourself in and shoot whenever there is not a scheduled event. Places in Arab, Hartselle, and Sheffield that I know of.

??????

I thought you had to be a resident of the county where you live for at least 6 months before you could get a handgun permit.

Jim, am I wrong?

I thought you had to be a resident of the county where you live for at least 6 months before you could get a handgun permit.

That's what I thought, too. When I called the sheriff's department to ask, the deputy said it would be best if I brought proof of residency as soon as possible and got my permit.

I still have my FL permit if they decide I applied too soon, although the two women who processed the permit do permits all the time, and they asked how long I've lived here.

How much can a cheap, quick permit be worth, anyway?

I then went to the sheriff's department to apply for a CCW permit. I filled out a short form, had my picture taken, gave them $20, and she handed me a permit. No waiting!

20 bucks? No waiting?

Heck, that's nothin'!

It only took me 5 months wait time to get my CHL here in Texas two years ago. Did I mention you have to pay with a money order? And it's only $80. ;)

"Welcome to Alabama. Choose Auburn. Being from Wisconsin you will appreciate the agriculture college. I'm an alum from there (one of the best Engineering Schools in the South, too). We say "War Eagle!"

And I'll bet those Bama fans called them something worse... lol...Like walkalong said, seems like if you live in that state you gotta pull for one or the other...Alabama or Auburn...If you appreciate agriculture, you might like Auburn. On the other hand, if it's football and championships you're into, well...you won't even consider Auburn... lol...I don't have a dog in that fight, so I don't care... :barf: Choose carefully, and be prepared to "catch it" from the other school...Have fun...

Welcome to the South. Gun ads on the radio are the norm and everybody CC. Open carry is not unusual either. Browning and NRA stickers are everywhere. I would not want to live anywhere else but in the Bible Belt.

Thanks again for the welcomes.

Here's another thing I found amazing.

Last August when we were headed down to AL, TN, AR and other states to scout places to live, I called the sheriff's offices in all of the towns to ask where carry was prohibited.

I called the Morgan county office and asked if carry in a restaurant that served alcohol was allowed. The deputy misunderstood me and said it was allowed but he wouldn't recommend it, as all that alcohol can create problems. I finally realized he was talking about carrying in a bar. And that carry in a bar is legal.

The only shall-issue states I'm aware of that allow carry in bars are Utah and Idaho.

I haven't found one single place yet where I can't carry, except government buildings. Even banks are okay.

Another bennie: my realtor told me there are very few radar traps in the area. I had my Mustang up to 120 mph on I-65 going over the TN river last week. That was fun. ;)

BTW, I don't like grits...

As a guy born in Chicago but raised since a kid in NC, I say give it some time. ...Maybe you just haven't had proper grits yet.

$20 and 15 minutes here in Blount County and no photo! I even got to fill out the application for my wife while she was at work. Walked out with both of them. I picked up an application for my daughter because she could not get by after work to get one. She filled it out mailed it in +$20 and got hers by return mail that same week. There is just ONE more little thing I should mention. You can get a CCW in some Alabama counties at 18 years of age. Oh yeah ROLL TIDE ROLL!!! Ramma Jamma Yella Hamma! I LOVE G.R.I.T.S.= Girls Raised In The South!

OMIGOD!! You must've moved to a right wing NaziFacist state!!!!!

CO is good to go too if the place doesn't have staffed metal detectors.

Be careful in that Mustang, man... Can't have anything happening to you until my ACOG arrives safe and sound.:neener:

Most ads on the radio here in Oregon are about celebrating sodomy :uhoh: cultural diversity and the environment. I miss the south. To be fair though Oregon is usually a good gun state.

Can't wait to turn 21
I don't know about Tuscaloosa but I would check to be sure you have to be 21. The sheriff CAN issue a CCW to anyone over the age of 18. It will depend on the sheriff. I got mine at at age 20 and a buddy of mine got his at 19,this was in Blount county. It might pay to go to the sheriff's office to know for sure.

I wouldn't make a habit of doing that. Lawdogs around these parts don't have much more to do than write speeding tickets. I moved "back" to Dixie three years ago and got pulled over more times in the first year than all the years preceeding. Sheriff pulls you over for going more than ten miles over the speed limit and you open up with that Wisconsin accent you're guaranteed a ticket. ;)

If you're gonna pick a school to root for, it doesn't hurt to pick the National Champs instead of those losers over at the Ag school.

Roll Tide Roll!

Gotta love the South.
The food is good for guns too.
Stay along down there long enough and the good eating will allow you to CCW anything :p (Because it's hard to convey humor on the internet: I love it down there and am only making a humorous poke at the subject)
Only thing I never overly enjoyed was the summer weather. Nothing quite like getting out of the shower in the morning, putting on your clothes, and heading out door only to be feeling like you hopped back in about 10 mins after you get out of the house.

That sounds about like how we do it here. In Blair county, Pennsylvania where I live, the LTCF application process goes like this:
Head over to the Sheriff's office in the courthouse, ask for an application. Spend < 5 minutes filling out application, give it to the nice lady at the desk along with a check or money order for $31, have your picture taken while the instant background check goes through, walk out with permit. It took 10 minutes when I went. It takes longer to find a parking spot outside the courthouse than it does to get your permit.

Before I turned 21 and got my permit, I had always assumed that my gut/spare tire would make CCW a PITA. I was wrong. I COMFORTABLY conceal and carry a Glock 17 IWB with the holster about an inch to the left of my belt buckle, in cargo shorts and a t shirt that actually fits me. Add a track jacket, and I don't even print. I'm not fat by any means. I am relatively thin, actually, but I could definitely afford to lose about 10 lbs from around the middle. It's purely a result of eating the worst possible foods at the worst possible time, and not exercising enough.

I may be an hour north of the Mason-Dixon line right now, but I know I'll end up living down south one way or another. Every time I venture down to visit family in Lexington, VA, or Dallas, TX, or friends in the Carolinas and Georgia, I feel more at home there than I do here in PA, where I've lived my entire life.

I'm another transplant, from the West coast of Florida. Alabama is a different and better world. Instead of a bar on every corner we've got a church. People are polite and friendly (for the most part). Weather's great in winter, and not too bad in summer, compared to Tampa. We've been here nine years, and plan to stay.

Choose a football team - it makes life more interesting. SEC football is addictive.

Also - I live in Shelby County, south of Birmingham. I get my license renewed every year by mail, for 20 bucks. And a very good outdoor range is 20 minutes from my front door.
