Alabama: culture shock

Welcome Monkeyleg

In Morgan county there is a decent outdoor range at the Swann Creek Management Area. You only have to have a current hunting license to use. I am not very familiar with the ranges in Decatur (living in Madison myself) but in Huntsville there is a little place called Larry's Pistol and Pawn that has a small indoor range. I get my CC in Limestone county $15 no picture and less than 2 minutes. I am sure you will enjoy living here. Lots of fishing, good sized deer, (not mulie sized, but quite a bit larger than the Florida version) and more birds and varmits than you can hunt. As far as open carry it greatly depends on the LEO. I was actually threatened with disorderly conduct and have thus stuck to concealed carry ever since. Yet from what I have read and seen in other states (lots of travel between the Corps and my current job) we in Alabama do not have it bad at all.

Wow, Dick - I didn't know you were coming down! Who is gonna take your place in good old Wisc???

And Welcome to Dixie! ( and please don't tell everyone how you did it up North, OK??)

Southern Speak

The only acceptable response is" Bless her heart!" BTW,she has a magnum in her purse just like everybody else here.

Southern Lady speak;
Bless her heart = that Bi#$h
Isn’t she a dear = she is so stupid she can’t pour piss out of boot with directions on the heel.

As much as I resisted, at first, I just love living in the South. Now if we can put the war of Northern Aggression, or as some still refer to it the past unpleasantness behind us.

I'm going to like this state.
Dick--
Yes, you are.

My best bud and I served in the USN in Pensacola in the late 70s, and he's been living on the Guff Coast since 1982 or so. Complains about all them dang snowbirds coming down and crowding the place up, though :)

I go back and visit him once a year or so and would live there in a heartbeat if I could find steady work.

Until then, I'll hang out in Texas :)

I'm aware of your good work in WI, and they will miss you. But I guess you can only bang your head against the wall for so long.

How do I know that? Well, 20 years in CA and another 3 in IL taught me a lot...

After 23 years, my head was pretty sore. Six years in Texas have eased the pain a bit.

If you are in the Mobile/Gulf Shores area, pm me and I will put you in touch with him. Maybe he can point you in the direction of good local ranges/shops/shooters.

Monkeyleg, when you do get pulled over, just say "My name is Monkeyleg", and maybe we can talk guns on the roadside a little! Welcome to Alabama, you'll love it here.

Monkeyleg go to some place that sells guns and ask them where you can go to shoot, if they don't know ask the local police, I'm sure there is some place that the locals go to shoot. And welcome to Alabama, I think that you will like it here. By the way that pistol permit you got is valid in all the states that border on Alabama and lots more, check out packin.org for a complete list.

It might be a little bit of a drive, but the Fort Payne Police dept. range is open to the public on saturdays. You might call them to get updated hours, I haven't been there in quite a while. THR member smince lives near there, he could tell you more about it.

Ooops. ;)

The lack of CCW in Wisconsin was a very small reason for the move, but it was on my mind. I'd bet that Republican Scott Walker will win the governor's race in November and the Democrats will be forced to pass a CCW bill. Just my gut feeling.

I haven't seen one single "no guns" sign on any building except the public buildings. I guess everyone is used to guns after 100+ years of licensed carry.

I've heard of the range at Swann Creek, and I saw the billboards for Larry's (another thing you don't see in WI).

On the third or fourth evening we were here, the two young kids from next door came over to introduce themselves. Very polite and nice to talk to. That was weird. In Milwaukee they would have sneaked over and stolen the hub caps off my wife's car. ;)

To you who have migrated south from the North or Northwest, you now understand what the South is really like - I'm sure you want to help keep it that way. Hush.

Monkeyleg, you'll like Larrys...Stopped in a few times going thru the area. If you want it,
it's there, or he can get it...but it's probably already there. Nice little range, too. Good prices.

Born in the state of Alabama and stayed here until I was 17 and almost 18. Enlisted in the Navy 8 days before the draft got me. Knot saying that every one in the south hunted illegal but I was 18yrs of before I found out the a flashlight did not come taped to the barrel of your 410/ 22cal rifle. In my youth I was involved in a shooting and the only thing police office said to me with a really disgusted voice- Boy we taught to shoot better than that. I am not one of those trigger happy redneck's that get shown on FOX or CNN. But the second admentment is strong here. AT 62 now I don't brandish my guns in a situation but do let it be know to all present that I am armed. Think moving back to Ala was one of the smartest things I did.

BTW, I don't like grits (at least the ones that we could buy up north), but I love biscuits and gravy.
Bein' from da' no'ath n' all, Monkeyleg don't really know what grits arh.

<joke> Yankee from Wisconsin walks into a southern diner, orders bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Waitress, chewing gum, asks, "Yohn't grits wid 'dat?"

He thinks for a second and says, "Sure, I'll try a couple."

Gotta try some Charleston Cream Grits w/shrimp and salsa.
Howevah, ya betta get th' shrimp pretty soon. Lookin' like they'll be in short supply soon. :uhoh:

Haven't tried Dave's Ultimate Insanity on grits but sure do like them with sausage gravy.

Wish we could get a simplified CHL process here in Texas; the one we have now allows the DPS to take up to nine months to process an application and it's not cheap, even though I do get the senior discount. Still it's better than the absolute prohibition on carrying open or concealed we had had since 1871. Looking at the southern tier of states from Arizona to Florida, it appears that Texas is still the most difficult state in which to get a concealed-carry permit and it's one of just two states that completely outlaws open carry.

It might be a little bit of a drive, but the Fort Payne Police dept. range is open to the public on saturdays.
Ft. Payne is a bit of a drive from Morgan County. Hrs are still the same AFIAK.

Besides the training mentioned by taliv, Matt Sims has the Alabama Defensive Pistol Academy ( www.adpa.biz ) in Gadsden, AL. An IDPA champ and a great instructor himself, he also sponsors Suarez International instructors once a year there.

Ours are $25 in Dekalb county, no prints of photos. The money goes to the Sheriff's Dept. for equipment purchase, so it's a good cause.

We're NFA-friendly too if you want to go that route (just recently approved a change to allow SBS/SBR's in the state).

Get used to being bitter and disappointed.

LSU didn't fall very far from grace,my friend. Just you wait for next season.

Geaux Tigers!

Oh yeah, forgot to add, I attend ULM. A couple years back the worst team in the sunbelt conference (ULM) beat Bama 21-14. I believe ole Saban had defected by 2004. And let's not forget who the National Champs were in 07. :neener:

Welcome Monkeyleg

Some of you Southern lawyers correct me if I am wrong but other than the stipulations on the back of your CC permit, the only thing you have to worry about in Alabama is public protest and or demonstrations. Unless it has changed you are not allowed to CC on your person or in your vehicle within 1000 yards if you are participating. Even if you have a CC permit.

The closest range I know near you is in Limestone county. Take 31 across the river, hook a left towards Athens where 31 splits towards I-565. Just past the community college you where see a Caterpillar dealership on the left side of the road. Take the left next to the dealership and it will take you into Swan Creek. It has pistol and rifle ranges. Since it is a WMA area all you need is a hunting license to shoot. As Jim has metioned there is a range in Arab off of 231, Larrys Pistol and Pawn has an indoor range which is located on the south bound lanes of the South Parkway in Huntsville. There are two member ranges the Blue and the Gray near Guntersville and (damn the name escapes me) on winchester road in east Madison county.

Here in PA the last time I had to renew my permit it was $25 and good for 5 years. It was walk in, fill out application, get picture taken and walk out. Total of about 15 minuters. To the best of my knowledge the only places I can't carry is in federal buildings and the courthouse. Hell even at the courthouse you can't take your cell phone or a pocket knife in.

If you live near Arab, AL, check out the Arab Practical Shooting Club. Membership there is $40 a year for a family and membership in the NRA (link: http://www.apsc1.us/). Rocket City Practical Shooters Club holds matches at the range every Saturday; IDPA, IPSC, 3-gun, and steel plates.

Monkeyleg...as one poster already said that bears repeating...Welcome to SWEET HOME ALABAMA!
