All you 9mm afficionado...precision counts...which one?

Okay, I have considered a 1911 Springfield BUT have ruled it out for the following reasons...

1.) Too big for summer carry
2.) Too heavy for summer carry
3.) Too few rounds in the well
4.) Not as precise as a 9mm usually is.


Sooooo........after MUCH soul searching I have decided on the following 9mms. Now before I start the CZ is too heavy to carry...except the PCR but it only holds 10 rounds. Bummer.

1.) Glock 17 and only the 17 because it fits my hand believe it or not. (I'm as shocked as you). 17 + 1 rounds? I like them odds. My question is, "is this Glock ammo picky like the 22?" AND "have you heard of a 17 kaboom?"

2.) Steyr....but there are NO highcaps available....this fact alone has ALMOST knocked it out of the competition...but one thing will save it. The accessory rail, is this the same "pictany" as the glock and XD? will it take almost any accessory?

3.) a police trade in Sig 226....readily available high caps.....accuracy out of this world, great trigger....BUT weight and size are ALMOST prohibitive.

4.) The might Springfield XD....this gun would be PERFECT except the gun needs a Hogue grip....anyone have one of this with this accessory? If so, how do you keep it from interfering with the grip safety? This also has readily available high caps.

so which do YOU recommend?

You know, full cap mags are available for the PCR/P-01... Financial issues aside, I'd rather have a PCR or P-01 than any gun on your list. As far as accuracy, reports of sub 2" groups at 25 yards have been reported and after a couple hundred pulls, the trigger is likely to be better than anything else on your list, possibly expecting the SIG.

Of course, the CZ weighs about the same as the SIG so I guess since weight is a primary issue, the Glock and the XD should get a close look. If I didn't own either, I'd probably go with an XD but I wouldn't sell my Glock to buy an XD.

For carrying CCW, I gotta say the Glock 19 is the perfect size. The Sig is more fun to shoot, a lot crisper trigger, easier controls, better sights, better pointability, but its THICK.

The Glock 19 is compact and thinner than other compacts out there.

The XD, although a very fun gun to shoot, is also noticeably thick. I love the trigger safety and grip safety, and the chamber indicator helps a lot.

No experience with the Steyr's, but a lotta good reports about them for a lower price.

For CCW, the Glock would be it. For Range gun, the Sig wins.

Yeah, I've thought about it while looking at other threads and I've decided I'd vote for the Glock, but I'd vote for the 19 rather than the 17. I think the shorter grip and shorter slide and barrel make for about the perfect IWB carry gun size... and the 19/23 seems to feel a lot more natural than the 26/27 size.

Not much experience with the 22, but my two 23s seem to shoot WWB FMJ and HPs, S&B ball, American Eagle FMJ, Golden Sabers and Georgia Arms Gold Dots equally... that's about all I've really tried so I personally wouldn't classify the 23 as ammo sensitive.

OK now that's out of the way.

I'm torn between the G17 and the Sig 226. I have been carrying both and have been favoring the G17 lately for 1 reason and that is weight. I'm more compfrtable carrying the G17 for long periods of time. I feel like a trader , because I love to shoot my Sig's so much, but after 10 hours the G17 is an easier gun to carry.

I'm still playing around with holsters, so the Sig may still win, but for now it's the Glock on my hip.


I really need to find the right holster for my Sig's!!!!!!

I'm sure there are some .45ACP fans that would take issue with items 3 and 4...especially 4...but you need to do what's right for you.

My G22 eats anything but reloads...because in general when you hear about a Glock going KB, you nearly always hear about reloads...no I've not heard of a 17 KB...make sure you know which mag's you are getting...Glock has 3 mag' variants...most "affordable" G17 full caps are not-drop-free which means they don't slide in easy...and sometimes, they don't pull out so easy...if you shoot to slide lock...they generally come out just fine...

Quality piece, great reputation...probably carried lots, shot seldom...these high caps should drop free if needs be

Well...you can get full caps that are converted Beretta's that still work in the Beretta...I've heard mixed reviews on using the factory .40's in 9's as full cap's...if you go with the Hogue, you have to do some fitting/cutting to get it around the Grip Safety...there's actually a grip called A-GRIP (Dillon sells them) which is made for the XD...I put one on my early Generation G22 because the Hogue Handall would ride up during shooting (no FG's). The A-GRIP is very comfortable on the G22 and I'm sure would work well on an XD...takes a little finesse to put on and fit right...over time the appearance degrades, but the function does not...nice feel...makes for much more pleasant shooting.

I have been the anti-glock on many forums for quite some time, mostly because of bad experiences with my issued G22 at work. Glock replaced our entire forces frames with Gen 3's, and after a year, we have had zero problems with or Glocks. As I sit here, I have a G23 on my hip. I voted for the Glock 17, they are accurate, easey to use, feel good in the hand, reliable, and fun to shoot. Good luck, I hope you are happy with whatever choice you make!

From your list I would say go with the Sig, but I think you should check out the Walther P99. 16+1 ain't too shabby.

once the AWB dies (keep your fingers crossed and letters to congresspersons flowing) hi-cap mags won't be a huge problem. I'd still say get a CZ. The PCR or P-01 are nice guns, and the RAMI looks to be fantastic. I'd say, go for a RAMI and wait for some nice mag extensions once the ban dies.

I voted for the XD because it has a better trigger and a better grip angle for me than the Glock. But since this is about you, if the Glock grip angle doesn't bother you then I'd say go with the 17 or 19. I think the 17 would be a little more flexible than the 19, but not by much. Regarding rubber sleeve grips, I was shooting with a guy who had Kwik-Grip (not sure on the spelling?) on his Glock, and it was definitely the best sleeve type grip I'd seen or handled.

-A 1911 will conceal *better* than most of your options because it is not nearly as fat as, say, a Glock 17 or Sig P226. Also, the smaller 1911s are smaller than any of your options below.
2.) Too heavy for summer carry
-An alloy frame 1911 will be lighter than most of your options.
3.) Too few rounds in the well
-Learn how to aim.
4.) Not as precise as a 9mm usually is.

Over on TFL, there is a nice S&W M39 for sale. I shot a M39 years ago and really liked it. Compact, reliable, and accurate.

I just picked up a SIG P230SL (aka 232) refurbed from the factory. Incredible gun for the price and size. Reliable, accurate, and easy to shoot (and this is coming from a 1911 shooter in fall/winter/spring).

It's .380, but it's a great gun. Try one if you get the chance.

Edited to add: Didn't see that you'd decided on the P226 if you can find one. I also have one, and love it, too.

Glock 17 is probably the king of the 9mms on your list. The first generations (sans finger grooves) are best of the Glocks imho. Also, the SIG Sauer P226 is dang good.
