Alright, "Metrics"... Talk Me Out of THIS One - Please!

I bought an M77 MKII in 6.5x55 last year. I have no regrets. That Hawkeye is a good looking rifle. I say buy it.

To me, the moles on this girl are:

- 1/2 lb heavy - for a 6.5 (although the Swedish Mausers were around 9)
- New cartridge - for me, so ammo stockpile and handload tool up expense.
- handload only - essentially, as the factory fodder is loaded for the Krag (although PPU loads for it)

None deal-breakers - and all together hardly noticeable or cause for concern.

I would've snagged it..... leaving it with *no scope. And it would be a great hunt/hike companion. Taking long walks down by the river with the dog, looking for crocs and hippos, haha.

*Throw a scope on for load development then back to issued irons.

Was considering the NECG Ruger Peep Sight.

This looks pretty sweet.

Could also alternate it and the scope w/ my RUGER 77/357.

I agree! Not a fan of barrel mounted slings and those peeps would be great if you were skipping a scope. I want something similar. Nice looking set up.

There is a capacity for a forend sling swivel stud.

Could remove the leaf sight and block (which I generally can't see very well anyway) all together, and just carry the NECG aperture as kit for a back-up to the scope.

"should put down the shovel..."

Amazing resolve you showed in NOT walking out with that rifle. Now, go back in there and get one before they're all gone and you have to come back and post your "Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda" post.

BTW, my Model 70 sports a 24" barrel in 6.5x55. I stopped in the middle of load development when I put 4 rounds in .33" group at 100 yards. Velocity? 2806, 2799, 2805, 2802.

Very nice.

What is your bullet and load data?

If that's a good 140 gr hunting bullet, sounds like you're done.

Think the cartridge really lends itself to a 24" Bbl., where the .270 can get by w/ the 22".

I guess I would want my “African” rifle in a traditional “African” cartridge like .375 H&H or at least .275 Rigby (7x57) but I’m sure plenty of game has been taken in Africa with the 6.5 Swede.

I'd put money on next year's model being a 270.

And THAT, my friend... is probably why this rifle lingers still.

The specter of another ole African chambering next year... that I AM stocked up and tooled for... the .270 Win.

Weighing that against the fact that the 6.5x55, aperture sighted, w/ its 25% lower recoil, might be a better < 250 yard cartridge for this rifle.

Have to admit, the ole Swede sings to me.

Why I was so surprised to stumble on this rifle chambered in it.

What's the story on this rifle?

WRA says that the "70 Westerner" was produced in '84 - yet Bud's claims CRF action.

Was this a special?

Grab-a-Gun had it as well - but is OOS.

GR

It is CRF. Winchester makes limited runs of these every year but for whatever reason doesn't advertise them.

Ruger has made some of the most beautiful rifles, with one of the nicest actions of all time (77). If they were accurate, that's probably all I'd shoot.
