For the .270 Win/150 gr. and 6.5x55 Swede/140 gr. - Talk Me Out of Using IMR 4831

I started out my reloading 'career' with IMR4831 in my 25-06. Gave good accuracy and never really noticed any temp fluctuations. Once the barrel started getting shot out (one of them has just over 3000 rounds through it) I switched to IMR7977 (close to H1000).
I was using IMR4350 in a couple of rifles and when I got my Swede I plugged that in. About midway through load work up I shot this 4 shot group:

And that's where I stopped my load work up.

45.5 gr IMR4350
Lapua brass, straight out of the box unfired
WLR primers
142 gr LRAB set .1 off the lands

Ran another 5 shots over the chronograph: 2802, 2804 2798, 2800

Don't own a 270, so no help there.

This looks very promising.

2800 fps w/ a 142 gr. bullet and that group?

...works for me.
(seems a little hot, though)

What Bbl. length?

Takin' another look at IMR 4955.

For a double-base powder, it only burns a little hotter than the single-base H4831 (3950° v. 3870°), though both burn hotter than IMR 4831 (3720°)

~ 1/2 as temp sensitive as IMR 4831 (though twice that of H4831), but appears to push bullets a tad faster, when loaded to ~ H4831 charge wt..

Not quite as slow as H4831, but, like IMR 4831, a better burn rate for Both the .270/150 gr. and 6.5x55mm/140 gr. from sporter length Bbl's.

Plus, it has the de-coppering agent.

Hmmm......

These are Field Rifles, and field loads.

22" w/ a 2.5-8X for the .270 Win and 24" w/ Aperture sights for the 6.5x55.

Bullet selection is the Speer Grand Slam, in 150 and 140 gr respectively. At $0.22/pop, they make a very good 300 yard field load with the economy of a range round.

And, because the ranges will be medium-long, 2800 fps is all that is required, which also helps keep the recoil down.

The bullets are very precise, and IMR 4831 has given me very tight and consistent loads in the 2800 fps velocity range over the years. And because the charge wts are a little lower than the very slow powders, that also lowers recoil.

It's just a little old.

Tired?

Antiquated?

Or... Classic.

Not averse to another 100-150 fps, but it's also not necessary.

Need ~ 8-lbs, and want to use the same powder and CCI #200 primers for both loads.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

IMR4831 is what I use for my Swede in all bullet ranges. Plus I've tried some bulk pull down powders like WC860 with fair results using 156 gr bullets.

BUT I'm waiting for some sanity to return and try some Vihtavouri N140 and N150 just to spice it up a bit.

What I've learned here is: We seem to have favorite loads that work for our rifles, just maybe not in someone else's rifle. That said, My two favorite .270 Win loads for my Sako Finnbear with 24" barrel is: 150gr Hornady Interlock, 57.0gr H-4831sc, Win cases and CCI std primer. Second load is same components except 54.5gr IMR4831. Same wonderful accuracy, very close in fps. In colder weather, I stayed with the H4831sc. Sorry, no help on the Swede.

In all honesty I don't chase "perfect" loads in hunting rifles anyway. I've found I'm better off getting to sub-MOA or MOA in a velocity range I'm looking for and then practicing with it. I haven't found an animal yet that will appreciate me shaving .25MOA off a load at the normal distances I'm shooting them. The vast majority of game I've killed has been under 300yds.

Most of the time I'll find an acceptable load during the 1st OCW tests then I'll skip the search for optimum OAL and the best primer tests.

Target guns are a different story.

i like N-560 in my rem 6.5x55 and my CZ-550 with 120 gr bullets and 140 gr bullets, top speeds with out high pressure and moa in my rifles.

I’ve only ever used two powders in 270 in over 30 years of loading it. Once is IMR 4831 and the other is a surplus pull down ball powder from a defunct seller called River Valley Ordinance for which the load data is surprisingly similar to H4831. I’ve never felt the need for anything else.

I can't justify switching. If you are starting out. H1000 is a good option.
I used AA4350 also.
My niece runs imr4831 and a 123 eld-m on deer and coyotes. It makes a quarter to half dollar exit wound.
