I spents less on the engagment ring then I did on most of the guns in my safe. It seems to have worked as we have been happy nearly 20 years. But to each his own.

I think she would resent the fact that you tried to hide it from her more than she cares about the actual purchase (she will find out eventually, you have to know that). Think of it as an early opportunity to establish some ground rules for your relationship, and see how she handles it. Better to find out now than after you're married.

If you really want to test her, try buying a new car. That's what I did
