I finally watched it. I'm a bit dis-appointed.......not a great show as I'd hoped.....just too much artificial drama. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything else, as it is (the shows format) no different from any other of the multitudes of "reality" shows currently running on Discovery & History channel.
I mean really, what could we have expected?
Now, having said THAT....I will continue to watch the show as silly as it is....if anything just to see the guns. I enjoyed seeing the ranchers lever guns, I also enjoyed the guy coming in with the 1st gen. SAA. That was kinda cool.
One part that was frustrating to me was when the daughter Paige was showing the S&W model 29 .44 magnum........I kept trying to freeze-frame the picture to get a good look at the gun to see what generation it was. Best I could tell it was a current or recent production from Smiths' "classic" line. Hard to tell.....
....and that comes back to what's frustrating about the show.......too much fake drama and not enough detail about the guns themselves.
Rick the owner seems an obnoxious guy......and quite a poser.....but then again he is likely just playing to the cameras......perhaps reading from a script.
I cannot criticize the kids, they're teenagers after all. They do seem like normal teens......I have to say though.....that the kids DID practice & display good trigger finger discipline when shooting.
Some folks seem to think this show will just be "fuel" for the "anti-crowd". I don't agree. I just don't see it. Besides, the antis already have all the fuel they need and will continue to MAKE more fuel as their agenda seems fit. You cannot budge such a stubborn & ignorant mindset and their minds are firmly made up. What the show does indicate is that the shooting sport is in the mainstream of society..........people like guns.....and the majority are good people. This is a plus.
Think about it.
I do not know anything about the entertainment buisness myself, but I think it must be true that before a new show goes into production....the producers must do research to find out if there is a market for the show to be produced....."Will we find sponsors....do people want to SEE a gun-related show?"....etc,etc. The answer must have been a definitive yes.
My point being that 25 years ago and earlier one would never in a million years see such a mainstream program on TV promoting the shooting sports.
As goofy as the show is......lets thank our lucky stars Discovery didn't create an anti-gun "reality" show!
We are progressing gentlemen!
So what we have here is just another silly reality show in the mix.....but just happens to be about a subject we love.......guns. (second smiley justified
)
If I desire good solid information I'll still consider the gun shows on the "Outdoor Channel" to be the best ever........but I'll continue to watch "American Guns" just for the sheer fun of it and being able to have a laugh with the guys at work on Monday.....and who knows? Ill get to see some cool guns now and then.
