Machine gun, SWAT weapons stolen from deputy's car

By Henry Pierson Curtis
Sentinel Staff Writer, Orange County, Florida

November 10, 2006, 12:59 PM EST

A submachine gun and other SWAT team weapons were stolen late Thursday or early today from an Orange County deputy's car.

The weapons were stored in an unmarked vehicle, one of three cars burglarized overnight near the corner of Curry Ford and South Dean roads, according to the sheriff's office.

"Obviously these are very, very serious military grade weapons," said sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons. " If whoever took these weapons did it as a lark, they should reconsider and call Crimeline to return them anonymously. It's paramount that we get these off the street as quickly as possible."

The .45-cal HK Ump 45 submachine gun particularly concerns authorities because it was outfitted with a silencer. That means it can fire a 25-shot clip of ammunition almost soundlessly and without drawing attention to the shooter.

The submachine and a second weapon, a .308-cal. HK G3 assault rifle is capable of firing full automatic bursts. A semi-automatic .45-cal Glock 21 pistol also was stolen, reports show.

The agency is offering a $2,500 reward for the return of the weapons. In addition to state criminal charges, anyone found in possession of automatic weapons faces federal charges

At least 200 guns a year are stolen from parked cars in Orange County. Gun thefts are so common that a 2002 Orlando Sentinel report found that more guns were stolen in Orange County in 2001 -- 680 -- than in Massachusetts as well as other states.

Earlier this year, a burglar stole a .223-cal. AR-15 assault rifle from an Orlando police patrol car. It has not been recovered despite a $1,500 reward.

Anyone without information about the location of the stolen SWAT team weapons is asked to call Crimeline at 407-423-8477.

So,
Anyone want to tell us that the local PDs are not becoming militarized?:what:

I think the reward might work better if it wasn't a fraction of what those guns will sell for, even being illegal. Come on! $2500 for a fullauto G3 and a suppressed UMP? I guess their DHS grant only covers buying the guns, not getting them back.:scrutiny:

Who secures weapons in a car?

The theft was overnight, based on the wording. So the guy left them in his car overnight in an area known for car break-ins. Nice. I wonder what the penalty is for failing to properly secure department weapons. Since I was just discussing my "olden tymes", failure to secure a military weapon was a court martial and my subsequent civilian employer would terminate you on the spot. I hope it meant just firing someone.

Even when we discuss "trunk guns" here, a consideration is always theft. Usually the poster asks for something cheap and not gansta freindly.

Well I won the scavenger hunt so I don't need them anymore anyway...

Seriously, who leaves "serious military grade weapons" in their car to get stolen and doesn't expect to be made fun of.

I guess he's the only one proffesional enough to have "serious military grade weapons" in his trunk, oops guess not.

They should replace "serious military grade weapons" to guns that the average joe can't own because of a stupid law from 1986 and an even stupider one from 1968.

"They have a .45ACP SMG and a .308 Rifle.. That's not really anything new is it? Didnt cops have full-auto Thompsons in the 30's?"

The difference is that "We the People" could have them as well.:uhoh:

Why do the police need a silenced machine gun??? Are they conducting Ninja assasination raids these days??? Are they making hollywood movies?? Seriously are they invading the fortress of Doctor No and they need to sneak up on the laser rifle armed robot sentries or something????

Generally when police conduct a SWAT raid doesn't the sound of them yelling police kicking in the front door, and stomping on fluffy the poodle while they hurl flashbang grenades, negate the element of surprise?

If they can have a cool silenced machine gun why cant I ?? and if its too dangerous for me to own then they sure as He77 shouldnt be allowed to have one either.
This proves it.:banghead:

Im not saying you shouldnt have one.. just pointing out how quickly that argument could be turned around on you.

It already has been and the powers that be decided that because of Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde, I shouldnt be allowed to have one, BTW I live in Delaware one of the states that doesnt allow ordinary folks to have machine guns or silencers, so please dont tell me about how the NFA works, I already know.

The reason the police in Florida have one is because they can and its a cool toy for them. It would be just as intimidating in Semi auto and without the silencer.

Ive got an M16A1 but i take it out at night. Some of our guys have UMP 40s. I like the M16 better.

Why do the police need a silenced machine gun???

They are rather handy for conducting operations in explosive environments like meth labs. Not even the police can own suppressors in Illinois though.

Jeff

I never thought of that.

Silencers to serve as flash killers in a literally explosive situation. Does make sense, though.

Is there some whiz-bang gizmo that one could legally construct to serve the same purpose (flash kill) for PD's in IL? Never occured to me before, but those labs do blow up once in a while. Not often, but it always makes the papers.

Firing a suppressed weapon indoors is much easier on the ears. Aside from the cool factor, the hearing safety aspect is why I like suppressors.

Machine guns were outlawed because of outlaws.
Just where do you think Dillinger got the Tommy guns.
Thats right, He stole them from the POLICE.
pesky facts.

"Only police and military should have guns!"

Question is, how do they keep hold of them? Even the cops should know, cars are not safes.

Either that or he ordered them as surplus military weapons from the Sears Roebuck catalog. They used to be availible via mail order to anybody with $50.
Also many us soldiers brought them home from WWI in their duffle bags.

Things like this make me sick. I can imagine police storming in my house, shooting my dog, me and my wife and then saying that we all attacked them and they either plant evidence or are not held accountable, because no one is left alive to tell the other side of the story.

I thought we revolted from England because of things like this.

BTW the Thompson wasn't used in WWI

Master Blaster, no, he stole them from the Warsaw (Indiana) Police Department, e.g. April 13, 1934 (also stole machine guns from Lake County (Indiana) SD). He and his crew walked in, threw the police chief down the stairs and then helped themselves to the Thompsons, BARs and pistols.

My dad rides horses with one of the only eyewitnesses who was a small boy at the time on his way to the movies.

Men were a lot harder back then: http://home.swipnet.se/roland/dillinger.html

I do not believe any Thompsons were Great War bringbacks as the weapon was developed after the end of WWI. I do know of one MP18 bring back here in Indiana but know of no WWI Thompsons even existing.

Storing PD weapons as these in a car, in a area known for car break ins. It's one issue for the PD's to have such weapons (that's another debate) but to have them "floating" around in cars overnight is just plain stupid! If the PD has them, fine (under some sort of armory, Dept Gun Room, whatever), but to just let these guys cruise around town willey- nilley, with these type of weapons just makes me wonder. HOW MANY OTHER TIMES HAS THIS COP STORED THESE IN A SIMILAR FASHION? :banghead: :cuss: oh, I already know...........this was the first time. :neener:
