The wife and I go to the pistol range at Outdoor World in Gurnee, IL every other Sunday.

Some of you probably saw the thread about the guy who was denied use of the rifle tube for a .223 "assault rifle". You may recall he had some verbal and written back and forth with them that indicated they had no clue what an assault rifle is versus a simple semi-auto. This is really dumb but at least sort of understandable from a corporate PC point of view.

This weekend I was shooting my usual progressive 15, 20, 25 ft, etc. routine. I shoot simple "+" targets out to 40 ft. When I got to 50 ft. I switched over to a standard 50 ft. police silhouette red center. As I was getting ready to fire, the Rangemaster came in and told me to fold the paper so the "head" didn't show. As I aim at the center of mass, ie. the red spot, I couldn't even understand what he meant at first. The I got it and pulled the target back in, folded over the top and sent it back out again with no "head". The RM said "That's better" and left the range.

Where does this ridiculous stuff end? Fold in the sides so the "hands" don't show?

Sheesh......

here in NoVA, at the NRA range, you cant use targets that have "faces"

when i first found out i asked why, and they said its because its a family range.

its the nicest place around to shoot, and you gan shoot the silouette targets so i dont worry about it

spenny

A range operator once commented on my nice, clean, "non representative" red spot, on a sheet of legal pad. Very PC, he said. He looked at the two drawn-in shapes on either side of the spot, but didn't ask about them until I was packing out - "What are those squares on the sides supposed to be?". I tried very hard not to smile, and told him "Shirt pockets". Practice is all a matter of focus :D

In Massachushiiits...

you can't use silouette targets or targets with faces on them. It's AGAINST STATE LAW !!!!

Do those Jane Fonda "Urinal Stickers" count too?

:D

Seriously though, I've been to that Outdoor World in Gurnee since it's just across the border from WI, but I've never bought anything gun or ammo related there as I have no idea what the whole IL FOID card mess is about or how it applies to out of staters...

Didn't even know they had a range.

I seem to remember someone was shooting at pictures of Hitler, saying that was political expression, and daring the AG to defend Hitler's pix. Whatever happened to that?

Here in occupied California, Target Masters actually says 'No Head Shots' on the silohuette targets that they sell you.

Its a piece of paper! And if I paid for the piece of paper to shoot at it, I'm going to shoot it! :cuss:

At Jackson Arms in South SF, they sell Bad Guy Hostage-taker targets for use on their indoor range, and you can shoot wherever you want on the paper. But if you hit a hanger, you're outta there.

This is why I love sloppy weather. I can go to the outdoor range, no one else around and practice fast draw, rapid shoot, targets with Al Franken's face. The worse the weather the better!

I agree

Shermacman, I agree with you 100% there is nothing better then a nice drizzly day to go shooting. Most people avoid wet weather like the plague. I don't mind if my guns get a little wet. It gives me a good excuse to break them all down and clean the living crap out of them. I also like to go on my lunch break. There is nothing more stress free then shooting a couple of mags at lunch time.

It's not for any PC reason. Too many people were shooting down the target carriers and cables with head shots on the targets. If you look, you will see that most people will be shooting at an slightly upward angle if you shoot at the head.

I have never heard of such ridiculous bull ***t. As if we didn't have enough problems in the world to worry about, some people are worried about where we shoot a piece of paper.
I WILL GIVE UP MY ROSIE O'DOUGHNUTS TARGETS WHEN THEY PRY THEM FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!

Depends on the shot angle. Some people might be doing head shots while not watching their backstop, but that is not the way to run a business. Just say 'Don't shoot the cables or carriers.'

I guess I'm confident about my shooting ability.

I was informed that I might find that silhouette targets could be used against you in court just like reloads...(sure...:barf: ), I thought,OK, how big is my torso? An area of about 9x14 inches is close. So I just cut cardboard and put it up. No dots, rings, or X's...they can't complain about that very much. I try to put my shots in the correct portion of my target...COM :D .

It's always been NRA policy that only LEO and military can use humanoid targets.

NRA is pretty careful to avoid looking like a militant group or an organization that is training any sort of militia.

They are primarily about promoting the shooting sports and defending 2nd amendment rights. They do get into self-defense, but it's not the main focus of their training by a long shot. NRA certified instructors are not even allowed to refer to firearms as weapons during firearm classes.

As far as the range trying to prevent damage by outlawing headshots? It's their range--they're the ones who have to pay to repair it. I'll bet they'd let you shoot anything you want if you gave them your credit card and promised to pay to fix any damage when you're done.

this thread makes me happy to live in florida :D

actually, the range i went to in virginia wasn't anything like what is being described either ... just goes to show you the ups and down sides of a republic

Yeah, because along with practicing the 2nd amendment, they sure wouldn't want you to practice your 1st amendment rights as well:banghead:

I recall reading an article in the Rifleman a few years ago about how targets with faces of politicians and nobility on them were very popular in the last couple of centuries. Try shooting a target with GW's or Bill Clintons face on it these days at a public range and see if you don't get visitors at your house later on- seems like we made alot of social progress in the last 200 years:barf:

NRA ranges do not let you use human likenesses- though silhoutes are OK- I belong to such a range and have no problem with it- private range, their rules.

If going to 'Gun Mart' to use their range, I wonder what they would say if you brought along a cardboard cutout or movie poster of a space alien to shoot at that you could probably purchase at a local video store to shoot at? I'd think it would be worth funny looks you would get if put a life sized cardboard ET on the hanger. What about a cartoon or comic book character? :D

Ok, if in Taxachusetts its illegal to shoot targets with faces......

What about buff cardboard as featured in IDPA and IPSC?

As far as the rangemaster is concerned ( as well as state legislators ) the proposed shooting area is an enlarged space for a target hanger that just happens to be a 6x6 inch square.

Cheat , I do :)
I've lost the link but I had some Barney targets.

I also had a Bear on hind legs, raccoon, beaver, targets of various critters...frontal... allowed COM and headshots.

"Yeah I handgun hunt and sometimes we have rabid critters on the farm".

Rangemaster:"umm, OK, be careful about rabies"

Yessir will do :)

Regarding MA laws:

AFAIK - This only applies to pictures and only to Public Ranges which rent guns to the public.

Dumber laws and lawmakers are hard to find.:banghead:
