Ok, here's the scenario. Your a younger adult with a pregnant wife and a 9 month old. You live in the sticks and currently have no guns and have only shot one gun in your life. (an AK clone) You don't have much money so keep it under $300 and the lower the better. You need something (not a handgun) to dispatch pesky critters and possibly the occasional goblin.

What do you get? Oh yeah, and only one.
 
Remington 870, the most versatile gun for such a situation, I believe.

i would also vote for a shotgun. i would suggest a mossberg. not as much aftermarket stuff for it, but it sounds to me like yer not gona be spending much money on that. a much better quality firearm imo. if you pick one up cheap enough you could also consider a 22 to go along with it which would be very handy aswell.
 
I would suggest a shotgun also. The 870 express is inexpensive and works well.

If time comes for a 2nd gun, I would suggest an inexpensive .22 rifle for the smaller critters. Single shot, pump, or lever would be my suggestion.
 
A used 870 express or mossberg 500 can often be found used for 180 bucks or so. If you do buy used, remember to cycle the action to make sure its smooth enough and not so beat to hell that you don't want it. If you buy new, do not be thrown off by the fact that Mossberg 500's are cheaper. They are every bit as good of a gun as the 870.
 
another vote for a Remington 870, and I might even suggest it in a 20 guage since you don't have a lot of shooting experience. The smaller guage amkes recoil easier to handle, and it is still extremely effective as a home defense or critter gun. There are plenty of varieties of ammo available for the 20 guage, for any job. You'll also find your wife will be far more inclined to practice with a 20 than a 12 guage.

The Mossberg is an OK gun too, but if the police, marines and me are using the Remington, it should tell you something :)
 
This is actually for my bother-in-law and sister. I'm hoping to get them into shooting. He expressed some interest in getting some type of gun. He thought he had to get a license and jump through a bunch of hoops and thats why he has been holding off on it. I explained that you only have to get a permit if you get a handgun (I hate that permit) and you could go into walmart and fill out a form, they call in a background check and you get to leave with the rifle/shotgun that day. He seemed excited when he heard that.

My sister really liked shooting my SKS but she doesn't have much experience either, I was going to have her go shooting with me have my nephew was born but then she went and decided to have another. :)

Personally, I have had excellent luck with the Mossberg 500. Shoots 12g buck, slugs, or birdshot. If there is any money left over, a solid shooting .22 would be another good purchase. With those two the parents will be well armed to deter any goblins, and if they needed food they could put it on the table with these two. HTH.

I honestly think the kick on a 12ga is a little heavy for a beginner's only gun. If your family can be trusted to properly maintain the weapon (damn the politics of chrome distribution in the mid-20th century) I'd steer them toward a Yugo SKS. Cheap, relatively low recoil, and the ammo should be widely available again very soon. Plus, your sister has already shot a Simonov and enjoyed it.

Heck, you could get both a Yugo SKS and a Maverick 88 (Mexi-Moss) for under your $300 limit. That way your sister and brother-in-law could enjoy both target shooting with the SKS (and not be as intimidated by recoil) and skeet with the Maverick.
 
She likes your SKS, eh?

Sell it to them. Buy a replacement for yourself.

Completely legal, no paperwork involved (hehehe), they all know they can handle it, etc..
 
Actually I have two Yugo SKS's so selling one to them may just be an option. :) (or possibly giving one to them. )
 
Remington 870 or a Thutty Thutty lever gun Marlin or Winchester. Also provide some way of safely securing the firearm. A small locking steel cabinet won't do much for burglars or fire but will keep kids and irresponsible adults out and that is my primary concern. So figure another 80 bucks or so for one of these.

A Mossberg 500 would be a perfect gun for your needs. Another good inexpensive rifle is a Hi Point Carbine 995 (9mm) or 4095 (40S&W).

Either would be a good choice for a first time owner. My Mossberg was my first gun. :)
 
Find a Mossberg Maverick 88. It's the cheaper version of the M500, it has a black polymer stock & the smooooth M500 action we all know and love. I got my Maverick for about $100 lightly used. The gun is black finished with black plastic stock & rubber butt pad. You won't shed a tear if it gets banged up likea nice wooden stock M500 would. Holds 5 rounds of 12-ga and goes >boom< whenever I tell it to.

I'm in a similar situation with my now not pregnant wife, but I have a 6 month old daughter. My wife is very petite and can't hold a lot of weight. That's also something to consider when you buy a gun, how much weight can your wife hold? (Please don't take that as a sexist comment) I would consider a 20 gauge youth shotgun, good enough to kill varmints and intruders.
