I have an AR15 and an FAL that were both built during the AWB and are thus without barrel threads.

Does anyone have any suggestions for turning the barrels to the right diameter and threading after the AWB dies?

I know I can hire a gunsmith, but honestly the one I just talked to quoted me $100 per barrel not including the cost of the muzzel thingy.

Both of these were build with my tools in my garage. It was fun and inexpensive. I don't mind experimenting.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Ya got access and skills to run a lathe? That's the only way to do the job right. Chuck up the barrel and get the muzzle end running true with an indicator. Turn the muzzle down to 0.500" and cut threads at 1/2 - 28. Granted, $100 is too steep for this job. Gunsmith must have some "insurance" figured into it in case he buggers the job.

Cheaper perhaps to burn out that barrel and buy a new one?

Special!? I'm thinking that I've got, hmmm, three guns to thread. If the special is special enough, I might just drop the uppers by on the 14th of September.

Thanks for the reality check. I went out and followed some links from the FALfiles and others. I found a gentleman in MI that will do each rifle for $40.

I also found a buddy with access to a lathe and mill. We may have to have some fun in his shop after hours. I'll let him practice on his rifle first.

As a follow up. I'd like to use a US built flash suppressor on my FAL to keep my parts count up. I really like the phantom. Would it hurt anything to turn and thread my FrankenFAL barrel to 1/2x 28tpi like an AR and use the AR flashhidder? Or am I asking for trouble?

Thanks,

Just make sure you use a flash hider with a hole in it bigger than 30 cal so you don't blast the thing off the end of the barrel. Because that would be asking for trouble :D Seemed obvious but like 'Tuner is fond of saying "It's the little things that get ya." :D

Appreciate those words of wisdom.

I had thought of passing a drill bit through the muzzle device to check.

Does anyone know if the phantom will accomodate .30cal already?
