I know, it's so un-American....but I just love the AK series of rifles. I only have one, but I am hoping to get several more before September...just in case.
So, is anyone else here a fan of the ultimate "evil" gun?

For short to medium range , there are few , if any , rifles that can match an AK for fire power , reliability and being short & easy to manouver in close quarters .

I am speaking of a semi-auto MAK 90 . Never fired a " real " FA AK .

God bless

I love the AK. I think it is a good design, and work well within its design parameter.

Last weekend, I took my AK-103 from AK-USA out to shoot speed drills with IDPA targets set at distances from 30-50 yards. I had only fired it once since buying it and never really considered it for carbine practice; mainly I bought it for occasional plinking. I was amazed how accurate it was and with the muzzle brake, how little recoil it produced. I was routinely making runs almost as good as with my AR. I'm going out tomorrow to do the same. It is a VERY fun rifle and may even rival the AR for the "coolness" factor.

You have a friend in me. Not only do I have three AKs, I have three 10mms as well.

SAR1, WASR10hicap,VEPR K

G20,G29,1006

Since you seem to have the same interests as me, let me vouch for the Saiga 308. I have three of those as well.

OK ....... don't panic ..... another one here!!

SAR1 ........ fitted tho with Mac90 stock .... had to trade ugliness for better shooting fit!! Added red dot recently too.

Apart from that ... just added (yet) another 1k of stock 7.62x39 Wolf ... in readiness for some more ''hot barrel'' range sessions!!

Mind you ..... the SKS's do get their fair share of the same food! :D

So who makes the best AK for a price of say $500 or less? One that will readily take hicap mags with no mods. TimH

Romanian SAR1 should fit that Tim ...... haven't looked at prices for a bit but .. you could be up to $450 now i think .... maybe someone will correct me on that. Mags? No probs!

Forget what mine cost - a mere coupla years back.

I just got my first AK as well (VEPR K), and have only fired it one time. Hoping I can get a feed ramp issue worked out first thing next year.

Costly? 10 bucks is the going rate. Don't know what kind of mags you were looking at, but they don't come much cheaper than that, for ANY gun....

I don't know ttbadboy. They had some prices posted over at ak-47.net. Those are the prices I was going by.

I've been liking AK's more and more lately. i found a local place that will order me up a SAM-7 with the scope rail. thats going to be my x-mas present to myself this year. i thought everybody had one of these in the safe? cheap ammo, cheap mags, cheap parts, reliable as a hammer. how could you go wrong?

I think I agree - no home,at least my home, should be without one. I'm planning on getting one after recovering from the Holiday ($$$) season :)

I have a pre-ban folding stock Norinco, a post ban Norinco Mac-90 and a SAR-2 (AK74- 5.45X39MM) I woudn't part with any of them.

I would like to get a VEPR Semi-auto RPK when I have the spare cash.

AK magazines, 30 round, brand new in the wrapper are available at most large gun shows for $10-$12. The Chinese seem to be the best and most rugged, but they're all good.

You can still get pre-ban 75 round drums for under $100. Again, the Chinese are the best.

I've had a couple MAK90s and currently have a SAR1 and SAR2. I love AKs...

For mags, you're looking at either some rare/specialty mag or a big fat ripoff if any 30 rnd mag is over $10ish... AK mags are the best mags money can buy too IMO... www.cdnninvestments.com (30rnd steel mags for $8.99 new) and www.aimsurplus.com (Polish Synthetic 30rnders for $10) have decent prices on AK mags...

For a $500 budget I'd get a VEPR if you want nicer fit and finish, or a SAR1 (for $350ish or under at a show) if you want more affordable (but not as pretty)...

Great guns and after a few SAR's, I've started developing a taste for finer AK's. Did a Saiga conversion myself and just got a pair of Arsenal, Inc. SLR-101's. The nice thing is that you don't have to break the bank when you pick up one of these rifles.

Hi, I bought a saiga convert from mriddick with the 20" barrel ,slapped the kvar US stock on it , Kobra red dot ,plus a 1000 rds of wolf from Gander Mt. Great set-up, cheap to shoot ,tough as nails . And The LOOKS factor when you display your EvilBlackRifle to the in-laws when they see it with the 75rd drum . ...........WVleo

I've fired an AK but when push came to shove I got a Century R1A1 FAL knock off when a nice one finally showed up in the local gun shops. I like the more powerful round and stable platform since I'm primarily a target shooter. AK isn't exactly optimal for punching paper (not that a cheap FAL knock off is either ;) ) but for my purposes the FAL style gun was a better fit.

Not to knock the AK, what it does it does very well, it just doesn't do what I want.
