I love mine... no problems ever, and it's catching up to my .22 as far as # of rounds I've put through it. Next, I'm getting a Romanian folding stock (in anticipation of next year's sunset), a 75rd drum, and a Weaver side-rail for it. Next may come a Fiberforce MAK stock for it...
Check the Choate MAK-90/AK-47 stock http://www.choatemachinetool.com/
Notice where the bottom of the thumbhole part connects to the grip on both stocks. The grip is smaller on the Fiberforce and unless you have small hands the Choate is much more comfortable as there is more room for your hand.
its possible to get a saiga for $200 and convert it for another 100 to have pistol grip and ak buttstock and normal capacity magazines. though you have to spend the money to get US required parts on it before modding it. overall it beats the SARS.
I loved the Maadi that I sold 10 years ago. Reliable, fun to shoot. I regret selling it.
My new WASR-10, on the other hand...
Canted gas block and a finish that makes the Maadi's look like a Diana-grade Browning by comparison.
Oh well, I'll feel better about it once I send it off to have the bolt carrier and piston replaced, the gas block straightened, and an AK-74 style muzzle break and double hook trigger installed.
Those are all some of the most fun things about an AK. They make recoil therapy all that much more relaxing. Of course, you've got to make sure no one is standing to your immediate right, lest they be on the recieving end of a brass shower.
Got an Izhmash-original Saiga M3 non-folder with a Kobra sight, converted to normal AK mags. Pictured with an Exel-made green Sako waffle. I just got a Falcon grip and a butt extension installed: next Monday it's range day.
I've also plenty experience with the issue Sako/Valmet M62 and variants, being in reserve after conscript training. Great rifles, wish I could afford one of my own... preferably the RK95
I am on my third AK and looking to get at least one more. My favorite was my first, a Hungarian SA85M with the blond wood and beautifully finished, $367 NIB w/3 mags, sling, cleaning kit, oiler, inst manual ----in 1987! I really regret letting that one go, now that they go for ~$1500!:banghead:
I also went through the Valmet phase and now have an Egyptian AKM. It seems I always have an AK variant on hand. To me they are historical and representative of an era. A serious student of military small arms will have at least one in their collection.
But if I new trouble was coming my way......after I strapped on my .45 auto, I'd grab my AK handsdown!
Very reliable, low recoil, enough thump to handle the job.
Down side.....it ain;t no sniper gun, and range(compared to other rifles) is limited. But it;ll do most of what I need done in a rifle, reliably, cheaply, effectively without kicking the hell out my middle aged shoulder!

That sounds pretty good as the certificate on the last page of the manual that came with my Saiga rifle says,
"Extreme spread of bullet holes (accuracy of fire) at 100-m range shooting is < 180 mm."
It doesn't tell how many shots or the exact accuracy.
No, I win! Did a... read my lips... 80 mm group of 5 @ 100m yesterday!!! A wintery range report with pics and video coming to a web forum near you soon...
Buddy had a brand new Bulgarian, I think, SLR-95 I also tried. Veeeeery nice. His specimen was tested in a gun rag here and they had produced a 32 mm group with it .
chapperjoe, that's the standard Kobra side-mount (sight version EKP-1S-03) on the factory standard side rail of the Izhmash-made Saiga. It doesn't allow use of iron sights - OTOH, it takes all of two seconds to strip the Kobra off in case it gets in the way. Taking it off and on again has no effect on zeroing.
Mine with a 3.5x factory scope will shoot 50.8mm 5 shot groups at 113.3856 meters using reloads consisting of a Sierra 7.9mm 8.1 gram soft point bullet and 1.6524 grams of Accurate Arms 1680 powder.
