I recently purchased two Mec-gar magazines for my 1991A1 Commander, I've no issue with them except for a friend who criticized me heartily. Does anyone have information concerning the overall reliability of this item. I'm good with my purchase am curious is all...

I have been using more than 6 of them, which I bought brand new. Use them in both 1911 and Commander models.

Reliability is not a problem. But the springs in them are all a bit weak, and sometimes they fail to lock the slide back.

Mec-Gar makes OEM magazines for most of the major firearms manufactures in the world, including Colt.

Here is a partial list of companies they have made, or make OEM magazines for.

AMT, Armscor, Astra, Beretta, Bernadelli, FN Browning, BUL, Charles Daly, Colt, CZ, IMI, Kel-Tec, Kimber, Llama, NAA, Remington, Ruger, Sarsilmaz, Sigarms, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, STI, Standard Arms, Star, Steyr, Tanfoglio, Taurus, and Walther.

Your friend doesn't know what he is talking about.

OK. then why does practically everybody tell you that one of the first things to do with a 1911 is toss the factory mags and buy better ones like Wilson or Tripp?

Everybody doesn't tell you that.

And everybody doesn't buy Colt 1911's that will work with Colt 1911 mags.

There are an awful lot of out-of-spec 1911's being made by a lot of different companies anymore.

As for other guns?
If you want your Beretta, or SIG, or Browning to work right, buy factory mags for them. They are very likely made by Mec-Gar and will work.
