Check-Mate Industries is or was one of the OEM suppliers for Colt's 1911 magazines.

I believe Metalform, and Okay Industries were the other two.

But it would not surprise me at all if Mec-Gar didn't get in their too.

They have made OEM mags for practically every manufacture in the free world at one time or another, including Colt.

I do not believe that MecGar has ever been the OEM for Colt. Okay, Metaform, and Checkmate all have been the OEM for Colt at different times. IIRC

Probably true on 1911 mags.

I think they did make the OEM mags for the .22 RF Colt pistols and maybe the .380 Pony.

Here is a list they used to have on thier web site of companies they made OEM mags for:
AMT, Armscor, Astra, Beretta, Bernadelli, FN Browning, BUL, Charles Daly, Colt, CZ, IMI, Kel-Tec, Kimber, Llama, NAA, Remington, Ruger, Sarsilmaz, Sigarms, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, STI, Standard Arms, Star, Steyr, Tanfoglio, Taurus, and Walther.

I believe you are right there. 1911 mags are the hardest to get right for your pistol in my experience. There are so many manufacturers of 1911s calling this or that spec "good enough" on top of the all the different manufacturers making mags.

I have gravitated to these:

Chip Mccormick Power Mags
Checkmate
Metalform with Wolf springs
Tripp Research
Wilsons

MecGar uses a tapered spring (top 6-7 coils are undersized to fit inside the bottom coiled when stacked) to get 8 rounds into the standard magazine body, and these springs tend to sack out pretty dang quickly. I also tend to prefer the traditional followers with the dimple on them to aid in last-round feeding.

I have a bunch of CheckMate/Colt magazines that I think very well of.

I use USGI mags in both of my Springfield Armory 1911's. No problems with them. Couple of my Shooting Budds have mec-gar branded mags and those work well.
