Are the Mec Gar 1911 magazines as good as the rest of their magazines seem to work in other guns? I have a Ruger SR1911 on order and would like to pick up 5 more magazines for it. I have some Mec gar mags for my Sig 2022 that I like so I thought I'd try their 1911 mags too.

I use them exclusively in a Colt Commander and they work fine...have never had an issue.

- It's Mec-Gar. They are usually very good magazines and are OEM for several pistol manufacturers. If you are asking about "Merc Gar" or "Merc gar" magazines I can't help you. They're probably Chinese knock-offs.
- Your sentence structure sucks and is confusing. Please give some more thought before typing again.
- You're welcome.

For 1911, I recommend Chip McCormick Power Mags hands down - $21.34

Mec-Gar does make nice OEM/replacement "metal" mags for Beretta, Sig, etc.

Don't underestimate some people's need to be smarter than you. Especially on the interwebz. I thought this was the high road, Jeff. I could go on and cite some of your other posts, but why bother.

As for Mec-Gar mags, every review I've found is positive. Available in multiple configurations including stainless steel with 7 or 8 round capacity.

I got a Mec Gar 1911 mag to try out. It fed fine and locks the slide back good (which my 1911's is picky about). Thats the upside. The downside is it didn't drop free and had trouble fitting the 8th round in. Plus with the flat base plate it doesn't fit into my 1911 now that I have a flared mag well, not the mags fault but something to think about.

If I buy another mag it will be a CMC+ as they have been great and the $$$ amount between a Mec Gar and them isn't worth it to me.

So it sounds like Mec Gar probably isn't the best bang for the buck in the 1911 market. What is? I'd like to keep the magazines under $25 a piece but still get high quality.

I guess you didn't read my post.

Check out CDNN. I have several of their metal form mags and so far they have ran 100%. I paid 9.99 each, for the stainless steel mags with the removeable floor plate.

I guess you didn't read my post.

I guess you forgot to mention your post was the most important in the thread.

Truthfully neither Mec Gar's nor my preferred mag are the "best bang for the buck" at $20+ each. Of course for a gun I count on not to jam this isn't a big deal for me.

Mec Gars? That surprises me but each gun is a bit different. The thing I didn't care for was that to spring and wrapped around the follower in some way, so it is a hassle to replace the spring when it becomes tired. Right now my follower and spring are in one of my factory mags because it drops free. As a jam free back-up mag I don't care so much if it only holds 7.

Edit: JDGray changed his post from talking about weak Mec Gar springs to factory 7rd Springfield mags. Oh well.

Ditto bds... "Chip McCormick Power Mags hands down"...
Use them in all my 1911s... Flawless!

If your gonna print what I edited, get it right!

The Metal Form mags I got from CDNN were complete junk, the guy above my post had removable bases that mine didn't, so I changed my post. The 7rd blue all welded ones I recieved, look to have 8rd springs in them, and are very weak. The slide will not lock back just hand cycling the gun, crap followers too. The bodys looks good, so I'll respring them:cool:

I said nothing about megger mags springs.

The Mec-Gar 7 round blued mags are excellent. The 8 rounnd blued mags with a plastic baseplate are merely great.

FWIW I have been running a test on all of my 1911 mags (enough to fill a 308 ammo can) such that they have always been loaded except for the time between shooting at the range to when I get home to reload them. Some for about 10 years now. All of my Mec-Gar and CMC format mags have held up just fine, with no noticable difference as to their vintage.

Thank you for pointing out my error which is rare for me. Correction: My post is the most important in the thread.

Mec-Gar mags can be had for around $12 not $20.

$12 + reliable/excellent quality = best bang for buck.

Thanks for reading.

I picked up some Mec-Gar 1911 mags from Numrich some years back. Those were the only Mec-Gars I've ever had that didn't work right.

I would add, however, that these were unusual 1911 mags; they fit the mag column properly, but were a non-conventional design, with a different type of follower, and a tube that looked much different. Those difference weren't obvious at time of ordering.

Mec-Gars made in the "Colt" style probably work fine. I used McCormick Shooting Stars with great success.

I use Mec-Gars in all my Berettas.

I use genuine OEM HK mags in all my HKs.

For my 1911s, I use either Wilson 47Ds, and/or Chip McCormick Power mags.

You get what you pay for.

When I ordered my first 1911 from Dawson's, I ordered extra mags, and ACT mags showed up. They work excellent in the STI and my Caspian and Para. IIRC thery were around $12 a piece with the pistol purchase.

At a fun show I picked up a few used CMC Power mags for $30 total. Cleaned them out and they have been flawless in all 3 makes.

Found some Wilson Combat mags at another fun show for a rock bottom price and did the same thing: cleaned em out, they work great.

Reliability in these 1911 mags seems to follow the same/similar laws of change: if you take them apart to "upgrade" springs and followers w/o knowing what you are doing, failure is more likely when going to shoot. If you go to shoot and they fail before fiddling with them, you got nothing to lose in researching here, in where to get different springs or followers. Capiche?

I bought 4 Mec-Gar 7 round mags from Brownells years ago for range use. They have been 100% reliable from day 1 as have the Wilson 47s used in my HD 1911. I have no experience with any brand of 8 round mags.

MecGar's are pretty good overall mags. However, I do recommend using either Wilson Combat or Chip McCormmick mags. Very similar in price but they have been tested by MANY, MANY people and have functioned great. If your paying 25-35 for the MecGar, you'll be better off with WC and CMC.
