I have been looking for the perfect carry gun for a while now. I am one month away from getting my license, and have been searching for the one perfect gun for me.

I thought I had it narrowed down to a compact 1911 or a kel-tec pf9, But I stumbled upon a glock 36 single stack in .45acp the other day and think that it might be the winner.

Anybody have any experience with the G36?

No experiences yet, but I too have been considering one.

Some of the older 36's had a problem feeding HP ammo correctly, from my understanding that problem has been fixed on the newer guns.

If at all possible it would be a good idea to try one first before you buy, the recoil is a little harsh for some. Mostly this is a result of the gun having a fairly thin grip section.

Good luck.

I've owned 2 Glock 36s, a micro 1911 and a PF-9. Compared to the G36 or a mini 1911, the PF-9 is in a different league as far as concelability. CCW is always a trade off, but for me, the PF-9 can be carried no matter the time of year or clothing choice and offers decent power and capacity. The G36 is more difficult to easily conceal under a t-shirt. Have you shot all of these guns? The G36 or 1911 is much easier to shoot well than the PF-9. The little Kel-Tec kicks very hard. I don't believe there is 1 perfect CCW gun, that's why I have many to fit different situations.

Bought one, Loved it!

I bought one used. It had a good trigger for a Glock. It was perfect for in-the-pants carry, and it was very light for a 45. It was about as accurate in my hand as my Colt Commander XSE. Because the frame flexes, it was very managable under recoil. It was easy to carry, easy to point, and the only flaw, if it is a flaw, there aren't a lot of add-on goodies for it. I sold mine because I needed some money for Hurricane supplies.:( I miss it, but not as much as the XSE.

I've shot the Pf-9 and a Commander sized 1911, but I have just discovered the G36. It felt really good in my hands, but I haven't had a chance to shoot one.

I do realize the Pf-9 is in a different league of it's own and it has been at the top of the list so far...But after holding the G36 I figured I could still conceal it fairly easy (i'm not exactly small) and have 6+1 rnds of .45 instead of 7+1 of 9mm.

After reading a lot of the negative reviews of the G36 that esq_stu pointed out, I am beginning to have second thoughts..

had two; sold two - not reliable

The original batch of guns had a different feed ramp that was resulting in HP ammo catching and not feeding correctly.

Since then Glock has redesigned the feed ramp and the guns appear to function properly.

Perfect CCW?

HTML:
1 perfect CCW gun

I'm sure you are right, but we all know that if anything requiring an armed response occurs, we're all stuck with what we have on us. The old maxim is "have a gun, everything else is negotiable." Another favorite of mine is the .32 in your pocket is 10 times more powerful than the .44 mag you don't have because you left back in the truck.
According to NRA statistics I read in The American Rifleman somewhere, they said most crimes are ended at the presentation of a firearm, rather than the firing of the firearm.
I've searched for the Holy Graile of CCWs for years, and I kept coming back to 3 guns: A 1911 of some sort, a .38 snubbie, or a short barreled .44.
I never felt comfortable with a 9mm. Ever since my first single stack 9 at the police academy, I shot steel plates with it and it wouldn't even knock them down!
Later, in the 'decision making house' where they had a kill house set up with targets of varying descriptions. Everyone was told a little different scenario before they entered. The mission was rescue Baby Dumpling. He has a red & white striped shirt. The terrorists all are wearing wild colored clothes, and one in a silver shirt is wearing body armor.
If one was wearing body armor, maybe the others were too, so I found the 9 handy for making snake-bite looking forehead wounds. I got all with 2 rounds to the forehead, which given my scenario was justified. With a G-36 I would have been out of ammo quickly.

I shot one as a rental a few years ago. It performed very well for me -- perfect functioning (although I just put one box of cartridges through it), slightly snappy but very controllable recoil, satisfyingly tight grouping in rapid fire and much better hand fit than the G30 I had at the time. But, I didn't like it substantially better than my G19.

A design feature I am unable to fathom is the abbreviated grip frame with an extended magazine floorplate. This is odd and seems to serve no purpose, as there is no corresponding flush-fit five-round magazine. It does no harm, though.

Go to "search", then select "advanced search". In the "key word(s)" section enter "G36" without the quotation marks. It should return 1,200+ threads for you. There are hundreds of excellent bits of feedback out there, and very well worth the read. For my part, and based on my own reading Re: G30 and G36, I'll take the G30. Gotta love those Glocks!!

Good luck and let me know if you ever need any assistance with search, etc.

I tried both the G36 and the G30 and even though the G30 was a little too thick, I preferred it over the G36. One reason was that the G36 would usually knock the last empty into my forehead and another reason was it's snappy recoil. Anyway, the G30 had much better recoil control due to it being thicker and spreading the recoil over a wider area....but even so, I went back to my G26 for a much better fit in the hand and more ease of carry...and it's amazing accuracy. Best advice is to try'em before you buy'em...strong hand and weak hand...and then decide. ;)

I purchased one used about 3 months ago. It shoots like a gem. FMJs, Hydra Shocks, Rangers all 100%.

It is thin, easy for IWB carry. My only complaint is only six+1 rounds. It is a bit stout to shoot, but I like that "sting" in the hand. Makes ya feel alive!

my dad had one, and then i reliazed that i didn't like micro glocks and glocks in any other caliber than 9mm, i just didn't like anything about it.

I've owned two : the first one apparently must have been one of the originals (as the reliability with JHPs was atrocious, perhaps 2/7 rounds would jam on the feedramp). Got rid of that one promptly, and got another one a year later.

That one, I still have. It has not jammed in 500rds of JHP/FMJ ammo. It's a nice choice, if you don't think you will have time to shoot many rounds.

What do you mean "yet"??
I've had a G36 since right after they came out in the last gasp of the previous century!!

Mine has a BOD of 10/2000!!!
I got it in 2001!!
Except for when I tried to get the extended slide stop to work (don't try it boys and girls, it doesn't work) or tried to feed it wide mouthed Corbons, the little beast has been alright by me!!

I had one a few years ago. It was 100% reliable, better than expected accuracy and seemed very concealable. Only down side (IMO) was the grip. I just could not get use to my pinky hanging off the grip  I sold it & ended up w/ my G19 that I absolutely adore ;)

Here's my writeup on the new G36 I picked up for $375. Has night sights also.
"I went to the range with this little gem and everything I have read about the accuracy and recoil is correct. Out of 107 rounds fired, all but 8 or 9 were in a group about the size of a grapefruit (maybe smaller). This was at 10 yards shooting offhand. Very little recoil at all but I am not that sensitive to it.
Before hitting the range, I broke it down and cleaned it up good with Hoppes #9, slathered it up with Breakfree LP and put some Hoppes rail grease on the slide. It was slick.
I let a guy who was shooting next to me try it out and he was very impressed considering he got a better group with it than with his new Beretta 92.
I fired both range ammo and my carry ammo, 230gr Golden Sabres. No issues at all.
Without a doubt this is taking the place of the MilleniumPro."

This was the first time in 15 years that I shot a Glock. I didn't buy it for the looks, of course. I bought it for Glocks excellent reliability reputation which is all I care about in a CCW firearm.

That darn magazine bites my pinky, plus it's much fatter than a 1911 with lower capacity. I really didn't like it when I got to shoot it.

A small (really small 45) wonder why many can't shoot it, Duh...

The 45 is shooting a 230 grain bullet and most who shoot the 9 are 115 grain, Hmm that is half the weight that is getting pushed down the barrel.

Every action has a reaction, :what:

How is that? The grip is made for 3 fingers when the mag is inserted. Same 3 fingers you place on a G19.

Anyways, I bought a 2005 G36 and it's been my perfect off duty carry gun. 100% reliable. It's a lightweight .45ACP, it's slimmer than the G19 and I don't know where this snappy recoil is coming from? It's got less recoil than my P-11 and 640

I've had mine since Nov. 2000. One of the early ones, with the supposedly (another internet myth) bad barrels.

Not one malfunction with ball or HP in 2K rounds plus. It's bone stock except for Decal Grip.

The only issue I have had is with Federal HydraShock PDA. If you don't hand cycle quickly to load the 1st round from the magazine, it will hang the round on the feed ramp. However, it functions flawlessly when loaded properly, and actually firing the gun.
