Just wondering what everyone's thought are on this. i am sure I am in a minority on this opinion but I just haven't had much luck with the 40 S&W in turms of accuracy or the function of the firearm itself. I have owned a Glock 23 and a Taurus 24/7 both were chambered in 40 S&W. I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn with either, the action seemed slow on the Taurus and the Glock would sometimes double tap unexpectedly. I also don't understand the role of the 40 S&W the 9mm seems almost equal in comparison and the 45 ACP definetly has the stopping power.

The 40 S&W has far more power than the 9x19, at almost the same capacity. That's the point of it.

In my BHP, it was very accurate. It's a yeoman self-defense chambering; I have no quarrels carryin' a 180gr 40S&W SD load...

BTW don't think I am bashing Taurus or Glock I own both brands chambered in 9mm and am very pleased with their performance. Thanks bernie

I will agree that .40 S&W isn't the most accurate auto cartridge in the world (had better luck with a 9x19) but it has lots more power which is what I like and apparently what most LE agencies like as well. All rounds are give up something for another.

Whats funny is the 40 has more "stopping power" than either the 45 acp or the 9mm. It is a happy medium between the two. The lack of accuracy is usually user error.

Never found .40 to be deficient in practical accuracy. Maybe it is inherently less accurate than 9mm or .45, but I'll never know.

I own pistols in all three calibers, but instinctively carry the .40. It is snappier than 9mm, but I don't know if that's your particular obstacle. Perhaps it's the gun? That Glock sounds defective, and the Taurus...well....y'know.

I am willing to give the 40 another shot maybe in a XDM or another Glock 23.

I would say keep practicing unless you ended up with 2 lemons. I have a H&K USP, SIG 229, SIG 226, Glock 22, Kahr P40, Kahr K40, all in .40 S&W and they are all very accurate.

Are you shooting Glocks well in other calibers? Or are your non .40 pistols DA/SA or SAO?
I shoot my Glock 19 competively up to 100 rounds accurately. The only DA/SA I own is a Tuarus PT92. I have since rid myself of all my 40 cal guns and reloading supplies but as I said earlier I am willing to give the 40 another shot.

Its not the round-

I just bought a stainless Beretta 96 with a Bar-Sto Barrel and a fine trigger job. I have only put two mags thru it but both resulted in 2inch groups at 10 yards- it was enough to make me buy the pistol, i know it is capable of much greater accuracy than the offhand shooting I was doing

UGH, What?????????

Deep South

I'm sorry to break the news for you but yes....it is the case....it is considered the second most effective HD handgun round after the 357 Mag.

I did not have good luck with Glock .40's, but was very impressed with a Sig P226 ST and a friends XD .40. Both were very accurate.

Glock 9mm, 10mm and .45acp pistols have proven to be very accurate for me, once I mastered that gawd awful trigger.

I thought I was personally having problems, but I find my Glock 22c apparently not as accurate as my other 2 9mm pistols. Of course, the sights on the gun could be fouled. My G26 has more recoil than the 22c, and I can put the 9mm pretty much where I want to. I can shoot the 22c in the general area. At 25 yards, the disparity between the 2 guns is very obvious. At 25 feet, not so much. It's like the 40's are not catching the rifling as well as the 9mm.

I do find the G22c a pleasure to shoot. It's very powerful in impact, and just feels really good in my hands.

I am willing to give the 40 another shot maybe in a XDM or another Glock 23.

Sounds like that 23 may have needed a good detail strip & possible repair. If it was carried a lot or improperly oiled it may have sludged-up the striker channel producing the slamfires. +1 for the XDm, easily the softest .40 I have ever fired & exceptionally accurate. I just got Heine straight 8's on it & can't wait to get back to the range. I have thousands of rounds through my G27; no question the hotter .40 loads require practice. You will get used to it just like your 9's, just get a lot of lead downrange and it will come together for you fine.

I haven't noticed any inherent inaccuracy in the .40 S&W.

I've owned an H&K USP in .40, and a CZ-40P. They were as accurate as any pistols I've shot.

and one statement you made:

the Glock would sometimes double tap unexpectedly.

Makes me wonder whether you weren't gripping the weapon tightly enough.

As far as fixing accuracy problems, for me the answer is dry fire, dry fire and dry fire some more.

9mm luger-Hornady-124 TAP-1110 fps/339 ftlbs
.40 S&W- Hornady-180 TAP-950 fps /361 ftlbs
.357 mag- Hornady-158 XTP- 1250fps /548 ftlbs
.45 ACP- Hornady- 230 TAP- 950 fps/ 461 ftlbs
.357 sig- Hornady- 124 XTP- 1350 fps /502 ftlbs.

.40 is no better or no worse than any other round on the market. It all comes down to shot placement. If you go by the numbers the .357 mag is still king and the .357 sig is not far behind. The .40 is just above a 9mm and not as effective as the .45 acp.

.40 S&W- Hornady-180 TAP-950 fps /361 ftlbs

Very selective. DoubleTap loads a 165 gr .40 @ 1200 + fps; mid 400's in energy, easily the equal of your .45 loading & my carry choice. I agree with your .357 mag statement, I just can't find a plastic pistol that holds 17 of them. (+1 for the mighty XDm.); Availability and cost really put the .357 sig at a disadvantage, and the 502 ftlbs looks a might optimistic for a necked-down .40.

I owned several 40 cal pistols -- sold them all in the great consolidation. OF the bunch, my Beretta 96 was the most accurate and nicest in my hands. I was on the verge of acquiring another 40 during the most recent ammo drought but never got around to it...
Do whatever works best for you! ;)

I'm pretty happy with my M&P .40 It took a couple hundred rounds to get used too, but now I'm grouping pretty tight. Not as good with it as my CZ75 in 9mm, but I'm a beginning shooter.
