I've only known a few hunters and they all moved on to bow hunting after a few years on firearms... so to me, the emphasis clearly isn't on shooting or guns. One of the fellows is a total gear head and loves getting every gadget no matter how silly and I can't fault him; toys are fun!
Personally, I'm most impressed by the work and knowledge necessary to handle the deer afterwards. The gadget guy has a couple videos that I ought to borrow one day. Myself, I've shot pests and shot, skinned, cleaned, and ate a couple squirrels. If anyone will take me hunting one day... I'll go.
