I am considering a AR-10 type long range rifle, I want a rifle that will consistantly group at 300yds and be a viable 600yd platform.

I recently checked out a Remington R25 and I really like it other than the fact that it only comes in camo finish, and it uses AR-10 mags that are not cheap, but it comes from the factory just like I would set it up.

The other choice is a Rock River Arms SAR-8 Varmit, the reason that I like this platform is that it takes FAL mags which I have plenty because I already have a FAL.

The MSRP for both rifles is about the same so that is not an issue, but I have had no experience with RRA products, all of my AR's are Colt or Bushmaster. I have also never shot any of the Remington AR's but have owned many other Remingtons with no issues.

So who out there has had any experience with these two rifles, what are your thoughts, "which way do I go George?, which way do I go?":D

Thanks

The Remington R-25 is basically a DPMS, so if you like it, look at the DPMS LR-308, which has more options and often costs less.

Remington, DPMS and Bushmaster are now all part of Cerberus, and while they are still somewhat independent of each other, it's not the same as when they were three unrelated companies.

Have you looked at the Armalite (brand) AR-10? Those are also very nice, well made, etc. Probably a bit more money but very nice.

Armalite's have had their issues, so that being said...I'd say get the DPMS. I've owned two of them and they shoot very well.

I have owned three (3) of the Armalite AR10s, and AFAIK they had/have no issues. :)

I did build one up as a LD platform of sorts, using a DPMS 24" fluted stainless steel barrel mated to the Armalite upper. It shoots nicely, although a 260 would be a more viable 'serious' LD chambering. I've been sticking to 308 for my AR10s simply because I don't push things very far and like the ammo commonality of 308.

So here we are again. Look guys I was asking if any members have had experience with the two rifles mentioned on my OP, I was not trying to start a brand war. I have been looking at this for some time and these two rifles are first, in my budget (this will be a "YOU PAID HOW MUCH FOR THAT?" purchase) and second, both availible at my buddie's gun shop for just a little over his cost.(I try to buy from him whenever possible) So can we get this thread back on track?:neener:

I too am intrested in the geting this thread going again as I am looking at the same types of guns. I am thinking more about a 16in barrel on a dpms 308 all the time... that just seems like it would be a good hog gun. My purpose is a little diffrent than starkadder's as I most likly wont be shooting at and 600 yard hogs, but just the same any info would be great.

I too have owned several remington bolt guns and I dont have any complaints, but how is the R-25 holding up. I have never held one. How is the fit and finish compared to the other similar rifles?

dont mean to hijack this tread, but just wanna get it going again.

Thanks,
t george

Don't buy any AR-10 that accepts FAL magazines. Designing a rifle around a magazine was a very bad idea. Either the mags have problems or the bolt has problems due to the differences in the feed ramps between the two designs (FAL/AR-10).

i think SAR-8 is so cool.
you must have more info about it.
good luck.

I've fired several DPMS and that's what I would get if in that market. They were all very accurate with standard ammunition and reliable.

I had the ArmaLite AR-10 SPR. Great rifle and the Gen II mags made by CMI were excellent.
ArmaLite would have been a much better choice for our new SASS instead of KAC's SR-25 thing.

which one?

I hjave owned 3 Armalite AR 10s. Can't comment on the others.
The full length rifle was the most accurate gas gun I have ever seen.
One malfunction, new mag had too much phosphate inside. Took 30 seconds to fix.
Carbine was a perfect truck gun. One short stroke with that one.
B model, well, the cool factor for that one.
But It was also very accurate. Zero malfunctions.
Plus, you get a life time warranty.

Well I went to the range yesterday and met up with some guys I haven't shot with in a while, and I had my question answered as to which AR-10.

One of the guys there had a DPMS-LR 6.5 Creedmoor, after he noticed me drooling over it he handed me a loaded mag and the rifle, it was all factory other than the 4-12 Nikkon he has mounted on it, he told me to put a few rounds in the "money" target (we have a 12" gong set at 325 yards that we use for open sight wagers)

After settleing in the bag I sqeezed the trigger and BING, followed by BING, BING, BING, BING, BING, you get the point, as I sat there in awe still fondling the now empty rifle he handed me another mag and once again followed the lovely ring of steel ten more times, I think i'm in love.

This is one sweet rifle, and after doing some research on the round and it's ballistics data it seems that the 6.5 Creedmoor is one of the best performance long range rounds availible with factory ammo (he shoots Hornady 140gr A-max) and the ammo is about the same price as match grade .308:)
So in closing I would like to thank everyone for thier input and to say that "my name is Starkadder and I am addicted to the 6.5 Creedmoor";)

ArmaLite would have been a much better choice for our new SASS instead of KAC's SR-25 thing.

i guess everybody's entitled to an opinion, but I can't imagine how you could come to that conclusion based on any real-world experience shooting either weapon. or heck, even just holding them w/o shooting. i can't even think of a single aspect where armalite would come out on top.

fine, what do you think is better about the armalite?

it's not more accurate. (armalite says 1 MOA, KAC says .5 MOA)
the mags aren't as good now, and after magpul releases their pmags for KAC style, they'll be even farther behind.
the rails aren't as good as even the old KAC RAS, much less the URX or awesome URX2.
it's not substantially lighter when similarly equiped (which is rare).
it's not more reliable.
the trigger isn't better than the KAC trigger.
it doesn't have ambi safety like the KAC
it doesn't have ambi mag release like the KAC
their stainless barrels aren't better than the obermeyer barrels KAC uses.
it doesn't come with a reflex suppressor that QDs to that gas block (and yes, it actually QDs, not just QA like most aftermarket cans. and it's way better than the SEI/fisher cans that don't even QA)
it doesn't have the resale or collector value of a KAC

edit: oh, and i forgot, it doesn't come with an ipod touch in a hardcase that attaches to the quadrail and runs KAC's amazingly cool Bulletflight calculator

heh, well as far as civilians are concerned, the only sample of the KAC m110 i've ever seen for sale is on ebay now offered at $26k. the armalite you can buy for $3k. so yeah, i guess it's got that going for it.

however, that doesn't explain why our Army's snipers would be better off with the armalite.

The only thing I can really think of is the PRS that comes with the SASS. The M110 uses a regular A2 type from all the pics I have seen.

actually, it doesn't. look at the pics at the bottom of this page http://www.knightarmco.com/images/sr25.html

it looks like an A2 stock, but it is adjustable and has a better sling attachment point. and obviously, it can be replaced with the PRS if you really wanted one, but that would add weight, and all you'd really gain would be the ability to put a mono-pod on it, which again, would be more weight

Oh, that's pretty cool. Still doesn't have a adjustable cheeckpiece, but probably doesn't need one.
We are getting kinda off topic, lets get back to the subject at hand...starkadder, the one thing to note about the 6.5 CM is, while factory ammo exists, it is a new, and not widespread, round. You will NEED to handload, and buy lots of components just in case factory ammo disappears.

The Super SASS pictured above is for civilian consumption only and it's not the ArmaLite SASS submitted to the ARMY for testing.

And no, I have not found details on the SASS ArmaLite did submit.
