Actually all those issues except the rock'nlock magazines can be resolved with off the shelf parts.
Perhaps. But I'm a simplistic kinda feller. I don't like tinkering too much to make something right for me; probably explains why my AR15s don't have optics, rails, lights, kitchen sinks, anchors and the like hanging off them. :)

i own both and i have them both because they both have there places.
for me the ar:
is accurate, easier to handle, totally modular to met any mission it needs to.

the ak,
tuff, reliable, accurate enough for the actual distances that most fire fights occur and beyond, can take harsher conditions.

btw nomad has got me turned on to going to tactical response after i get back from this deployment and i will definetly be taking an ak of some sort. either my mak-90, or an ak-74 which is the rout i want to go if i can fit it in the budget. it saves tons on ammo cost, and is perfect for that type of enviornment like he posted and witnessed!

I can appreciate that. I am a tinkerer though and I modify almost everything I have to better meet my personal tastes. I used to agree wholeheartedly on on rails, optics and lights, I wouldn't want'em if you gave'em to me for free.

Since then I've learned to appreciate red dot-type sights and "scout scopes" and especially a vertical foregrip. I still try to keep the rails down to a minimum because they're only useful to me because of what I can attach to them, I don't think they make my gun look cool or anything. The last holdout was weapon mounted lights, then I moved to the country and became a chicken farmer. Now I can't get a light on my gun fast enough.

Well, at least I don't try to mount all that stuff plus a bipod. heh! :neener:

'A G3 or HK-91 is less reliable because the fluted chamber can't handle steel case ammunition.'

That is news to me since I regularly shoot Chinese steel case ammunition in my PTR-91,
I imagine it will come as a huge suprise to all the African folks, good and bad, who regularly field G3 rifles made in places like Britian, France, and Saudi Arabia loaded with steel case ammunition from places like China and North Korea.

So to make it all more confusing: what about op-rod model AR's? How do they stack up to AK's?

What about the AR-180/180B which is basically the AR equivaletn of an AK? It's got an op rod, lose tolerances, etc. Still has the ARs ergonomics (or lack of if you don't like ARs)

I'm not gonna start on FAL's vs the other two (well I might actually just in a seperate thread).
