I called the Arapahoe County (Colorado) Sheriff's Office about applying for a CC permit (to make sure I was going to the right place before driving all the way down there) and was told:

"You have to come down here and pick up the application, then call the phone number and make an appointment to apply"

I go down to the office and was told by the (very polite) officer at the door "Yeah we're so backlogged, it'll be more than a month before you can even drop off your paperwork"

***? Is there time limitation for "Shall issue" they're trying to avoid or what?

Grrrr, I should have made an appointment long before I even had the NRA pistol class.

My Colorado sheriff's office has the application at its web site. I had to wait a week or ten days for the appointment to be finger-printed and photographed. Everyone I dealt with was polite and helpful. I was told the wait would be a month; it was actually three weeks. I was told my first permit would be valid for a year; it's actually valid for four.

Unlucky,

There is a statewide shall issue law in Colorado. All Sherriff Depts have the same application (with different letterhead). There is a maximum time allowed for checking you out before they issue (I recall 90 days). I live in Jefferson County. They designate Tuesdays and Thursday from 8:00 to 4:00 as the only times you can submit for permits or pick up your permit when complete. They take about 8 weeks to issue from the peope I have polled. The best luck has been had if you call them to see if your permit is ready. I know two people who have called and wer etold their permit was ready to pick up and "we were going to call you this week."

It is all so citified here on the eastern slope that you won't find much difference in attitude of people. Sherriffs come and go every few years so I wouldn't base my choice of home location based on CCW friendliness (your mileage may vary).

that sounds like quite a wait. I'd better call and make an appointment soon. I'm rounding up my papers now. I filled out the app already.

Denver counties:
Adams - pretty good from what I hear
Broomfield - brand new county of refugees from Boulder. Jury still out.
Boulder - Peoples Republic of Boulder
Denver - Like boulder, only with twice the burocracy
Anything north of these - pretty rural, but well positioned for work on the north side of town

How far out you want to be?

Might want to figure out a home site that won't require travel on I-25. South bound I-25 is practice for Indy-500. The whole north side is blossoming/booming/filling with housing developments. People commute from as far away as Loveland and Ft. Collins.

As far as CCW's, all counties are supposed to issue. I haven't applied yet, but several have gotten 'em OK in Adams, Weld, Larimer. Don't know much about Boulder, 'cept it is a paradox of liberal/conservatives, as I see it. Most of the municipal chiefs pride themselves on not issuing permits, true to the liberal city councils. So the new CCW bill and the pre-empt bills eased things some what. Never can tell how a zealous patrolman might cause a hassle, tho'. Couple state patrolmen I've talked with agree wholeheartedly with CCW.

Good Luck, Howard

Another vote here for avoiding Boulder. I haven't gone through the CCW hassle as of yet, but aside from the beautiful scenery and weather, it's not a good place to live. Very overpriced, extremely liberal, ridiculously low speed limits, the list goes on. I wouldn't be here if I weren't going to school.

Westminster itself isn't a bad town. If you're going to work there, why not live there?

I agree with Morgan: Westminster isn't too bad a place. Broomfield seems pretty nice, too, the few times I've been through there. Shouldn't be much hassle getting from there to Westminster for work.

Also, as far as "counties" go, do NOT mistake Boulder County for Boulder City. They have NOTHING in common politically. Boulder County is one of the most conservative in the entire state.

If you're looking for small and quiet, then maybe Brighton would be worth a look. The added bonus there is getting to play golf at Riverdale Dunes on the "resident" rate! :D

I live in Jefferson County which is okay. It is as close as you can get to the mountains and still have to drive an hour to get there. Trouble with the whole metro area is that there are lots of people in a small space.

Boulder County

Boulder city is the peoples' republic. But outside the city limits, it is not a bad place to be. The Sherriff was issuing permits years before the state became shall issue. Cost of living can be a surprise. Californians have driven up the cost of living, but housing has been relatively flat for a couple of years.

I called to make my appointment today. The lady in charge is on vacation but they said they'd call me back on Wednesday. We'll see.
