If your pan or replacement pan does not zero there is lead shot in the hanger that the pan sits on. There is a screw you can remove to adj the weight to zero your scales with your pan.

Personally I like the chassis to be somewhat level prior to adjusting the beam to zero. To accomplish that the pan and BB’s in the bottom may need a weight adjustment. Looks like several guys have the same input.

In theory yes, but the level adjusting wheel will only compensate for 4-5 grains. I guess the handle has broken off your pan, if so, pretty well any option to fix it will add weight. I wouldn't try too hard in making the perfect invisible repair to keep the weight the same. Just epoxy a substitute handed on, set your adjusting wheel to about half it's travel then balance the beam by removing lead shot from the weight box. Once this is done it won't effect the calibration or accuracy of the scale in any way.
If I replaced the pan with another pan, would I have to re-calibrate the scale? If both pans weighed the same, would a calibration be needed or just use the adjustment wheel and zero the scale? I will test it with my RCBS weights to see it it needs any calibration!! I have an RCBS digital scale I can compare weights to each other.
If both pans are the same weight, then no adjustment to the pan weights needed, however, I've found that it's unusual to find two the same. If you've got enough adjustment with a bit to spare on you leveling wheel nothing to worry about.
I got out my RCBS Pocket digital scale and measured the pan of my 505 scale and it weighed148.1 grains, I also measured the pan from my RCBS Pocket scale and it measured 127.7 grains so guess no matter what I do I will have to calibrate the scale after repairing the pan, or for that matter even if I buy a new one. Guess if I have to recalibrate anyway I might as well repair the damaged pan the best I can and then calibrate the 5-10 scale. That one looks exactly like my 10-10 and 5-10 pans....only it has two "ears" instead of one. If it's too heavy....and I doubt it will be.....you could always cut one of the "Mickey Mouse ears" off. But I'll bet they would work just the way they are. It just has to be within the "zeroable" range.

The only "calibration" is to zero the pointer with the leveling wheel.
If the point is at zero, the scale is ready.

Picked up the scale today, a little on the dirty side, cleaned up the unit with alcohol and repaired the pan. Did a weight check with my RCBS weights and 200 balances at 200 same as 100 & 50 grain weights. Good to go!! Didn't need to calibrate, guess I got a good deal.
