Armed while in the shower?

If you don't feel safe in your own home, the answer isn't another gun, but to find a new home. Sure there's always the possibility of intruders in any neighborhood, but if you can't even shower without the need to feel armed, I would say thats the biggest red flag you're gonna get.

And to answer your question 870 marine magnum. Recommended by skeet surfers everywhere.

Move where? To a nicer neighborhood? Isn't it flawed to assume that criminals don't want to rob people with money and will target the poorer areas instead? Don't forget some people won't necessarily be helped by moving like the woman who is being targeted by her battering ex.

If you sat down and talked with someone who had their door kicked and was beaten in the living room of their home in a good part of town, would you be able to tell them that they're silly to want a gun in the shower? I sure don't think I could do anything but tell them to do whatever makes them feel safe in their home.

Reinforce your entry/exit areas if possible to buy extra time. Homeowners, look at steel door frames and doorjambs. Non-homeowners, use sturdy door braces. If possible, keep a dog around as an early warning device.

I don't carry *in* the shower, mostly because I'm lazy and have a shotgun about ten feet away anyhow, but if I did, the tupperware container is probably the best idea. The budget alternative would be a sealed gallon-sized ziploc baggie.

An obvious solution to the mosture problem of possible rust would be to insert the hand gun into a plastic sanwhich bag or freezer bag that's sealed with zip lock or tape.

You got finger nails or teeth don't you, tear the bag open in an emergency.

While in the Army, we had to have overwatch while using the latrine...always worried about snipers. Military operations in urban terrain produce even worse scenarios...which I wont go into here. I'll be damned if I have to live that way in my own house...not here in the United States! While I can "possibly" understand the concerns of travelers and hotel precautions, I am in control of my home's security. If I have to be worried about a goblin breaching my door, breaching my dogs...and then breaching my locked bathroom whithout my knowledge and subsequent defensive posture, then I need to get a security consultant and consider moving to a more secure environment. Weapons are tools for me...I am not addicted to firearms nor do I live, breathe and sleep in fear. There are comments in this thread that smack of "compulsive disorder" IMHO.:scrutiny:

Well, for starters we aren't talking about vengful exs so thats not really relevant. As for your logic, I would agree with you in principle but the facts simply contradict you. The nicer the neighborhood the fewer incidences there are of violent crime and break-ins.

Would I tell that specific person, no. They have obviously been traumatized so theres no point in me doing anything other than letting them take any measures that make them feel safe. Would I tell others that carrying in the shower is silly, well yes. Remember, we aren't talking about a gun in the house, we are talking about a gun in the shower. If someone is that paranoid then again my advice would be to find a nice area where you don't feel the need to carry 24/7. I do this for the same reason that I don't advise concertina and claymores along with garden gnomes. Its not practical and its simply isn't the way to live your life.

Emphasis mine. If you don't feel it to be practical in your situation, then fine. However, if someone else feels that they would like to take extra steps to ensure they have the means to respond to a threat, than it may well be practical.

Anyhow: big, sealed tupperware container, or a sealed gallon-sized ziplock baggie. Best two suggestions I've heard, since even stainless steel will rust given enough abuse. ;)

In one house I lived in I had 'shelves' in the upper corners of the shower stall.
A SS revolver in a ziplock lived on one.

As is, I CCW all the time, the 1911 goes on the back of the toilet, right next to the shower. I shower with the door locked... I figure the door splintering will allow me to reach it.

I don't think about it... I just always have a firearm on, and it's gatta go somewhere anyway?

As to those of you who think we are nutz... you've already had one real life example of the need... if you can't come to grips that there are crazys out there who do not respect ANYTHING I think it is YOU who need to seek help.

My first two wives (20yr & 3yr - some things shouldn't be 'recycled'!) was a smallish person - 5'3" & 115lb. One Valentine's Day, some time after our second divorce, she was upset at work as I hadn't sent her a card or flowers (Duh?) and came by my apartment. It had a 'security door' - steel - with dead bolts, chain, and strikers & hinges secured to the studs. She kicked it in when I was slow to answer the door (Yeah, I was alone - she knew that!)... it knocked me to the floor. The local gendarmes offered to give her a room for the night, but I stupidly refused to press charges. It cost me big time to fix that door. Mute testimony to the power of Prozac, too. I don't think a large man would have too much problem with a big security door. Maybe some 'reactive armor' on the security door would be a better idea...

I am back to carrying now - a 642 & Mikas pocket holsterhelped there, as my 296 only fit selected pockets. I just cannot see myself planting firearms everywhere around the house. Of course, it has been a while since the last 'home invasion' in these parts. I guess I'll just remain complacent.

I have actually heard...

I know a few police officers who actually do this. They actually put their gun( Beretta 92, and Sig 220) into a zip lock bag, along with extra magazines, and take this with them into the shower They have been doing this for the past 10 years or so.

I am not sure if their concern is justified, but they go through this ritual every time they take a shower.

The way i see it, if you have it for protection, there are 2 choices. lock it in the safe or take it in the bathroom. Leaving it on a table while your in the shower is plain stupid. Of course there's the grey area of hiding it.
