I have recently become enamored with the Magpul MOE handguards. I haven't gotten around to getting an AR yet, and I'm starting to think that for my first, the MOE would probably be better for me than a quad rail. However, rather than buy them aftermarket and have a gunsmith install them (don't even suggest I install them myself, trust me), it would be simpler to get the handguard already installed on the rifle.

Knowing less than zilch about most AR manufacturers (I've looked more at pistol manufacturers, and then the concept of the AR in general), I'm trying to find models that use the MOE as a standard feature. I've found a few (S&W M&P MOE, for example) but I wanted to see what else was available.

Specifically something with a short rail over the gas port (or a flip-up front sight) instead of a front sight would be awesome, as well as a rail on the upper receiver.

I like their forend. A worth while upgrade for $30-$35. If you can figure out how to load and fire the rifle, you can figure out how to replace the forend without a gunsmith.

Colt did a release of the 6920 with magpul MOE furniture recently. That's a good place to start

JMR40, I know you mean well, but trust me. I have successfully done DIY-work about as many times as I'm assuming you've summoned fireballs from outer space with the power of your mind. I'll take it to a gunsmith.

Thanks for the info silicosys.

A simple tool is all that is required to change out the handguards.
DO read the installation instructions that come with the MOE because the cylindrical kind are interchangeable top or bottom and the MOEs are not.

A simple tool is all that was required for me to do an APEX trigger kit on my M&P pistol. I put a hole in the trigger and had to have a gunsmith fix it. If it ain't field stripping and wiping it down, I take it to someone who knows how to use tools.

Really no need for smith to install. It is very easy.

I am a Magpul junkie. I use magpul sights, trigger guards, grips and stocks on all of my builds. I also use their sling mounts and vert grips on some ARs. I like their MS2 sling too.

What is required? Because like I said, I'm about as competent with tools as a revolver is at feeding Glock magazines.

Colt (as pictured above), S&W, PSA and others have MOE models. Nice thing about PSA is they also offer a 16" midlength gas if you prefer, as I do.

I agree with the others, changing handguards isn't that difficult especially with the $15 tool.

Honestly, if you think that swapping that swapping out hand guards is too onerous of a task, the AR platform probably isn't for you.

I assume you've shot a rifle with one a bit to become so enamoured. Did you ask the person whose AR you used about the installation?

Don't know if they are still made, but Bushmaster also had MOE furniture. A buddy had one with several thousand rounds down range. The only thing I noticed was the OD paint had started to rub off on certain areas.

No tool needed. I had my 16 year old daughter hold down the delta ring while I swapped hand guards.

^^ This.

I managed to hold change out foreends all by my lonesome simply by holding down the delta ring, pull off the old handguards, the add the new ones. It turns out that I really did not like the MOE foreends, so later that day, I just swapped the old ones right back on. It was probably funny to watch, but very do-able.

Here is a video showing how easy it is ... but they are showing off a neat little tool. Honestly, you don't need a tool if you at least have a buddy hold down the delta ring.

Really, I've had ball point pens that were more complicated to put back together ... just not quite so big :)

Bushmaster also has a Magpul MOE version out.

The only tools needed for the handguard are your hands. Just pull back the Delta ring and pull them off from the rear. If you want to get fancy, you can get a tool to help depress the delta ring. It of course is easier if you have someone pull them off while you take the tension off the delta ring.

As for the buttstock, just make sure you identify your buffer tube as commercial or milspec and order the correct MOE stock. Commercial tubes have a slant at the back as a way to identify them. Pull on the release on your old collasible stock in the opposite direction as you would to adjust the length and slide off the buffer tube. Do the reverse to install the MOE.

Trust me..it's super easy. If you can fill a speedloader with rounds and use it, then you can do this job.

I probably wouldn't buy a rifle that I couldn't trust myself to properly disassemble and reassemble... especially if I had decided beforehand that I was unwilling to learn (which any human being with an IQ over 60 could do if they really wanted to). If you can't figure out the handguards, you will probably have at least as much trouble removing and disassembling the bolt carrier group, which is a necessary part of regular cleaning. If you are THAT mechanically inept, you should probably stick with something simpler, like a bolt action or single shot.

Okay I can do that. I guess the instructions I'd read in the past were for free-float quad-rail handguards, and those actually require some tools if I'm not mistaken.

Still would be simpler if I bought a rifle that had more of what I wanted installed by default instead of having to add on the parts, though. And based on the prices I'm seeing, it wouldn't be *too* much more expensive.

They teach 18yo at basic how to remove and install handguards in every Marine and Army basic training class as part of normal cleaning and maintenance.

The ring (called a Delta ring, if you care) at the receiver end of the handguards is held in place by spring pressure. Push it back toward the receiver. While holding it in back (a buddy is useful here) slip first one and then the other handguard off. Install in reverse order.

Time is money.
That being said, it may be a better buy to purchase a rifle with the Magpul furniture installed. Othewise you would have to sell your old front handguards and collapsible buttstock (time and effort) to offset the purchase of new parts.

Now if you were going to a Free Float System, I would definitely recommend purchasing one with the system installed as you would have to buy an action block, free float wrench, punch, and if you want to get techinical- a torque wrench to do the job.

Check out Surplus Ammo and Arms, off Pacific Highway between exits 124 and 125. They may have something on the wall with MAGPUL.

Good call all the way from TN, it's my new favorite gunstore since I found them.

I lived in Lakewood and DuPont from 2002-2010. Quantico tactical has some good ones, but mostly the high end stuff. SAA is the best gun store around. When I lived there Bulleye had free range time on Tuesdays for the military, so every Tuesday was range night.

I just got my Palmetto State Armory mock dissipator with all MOE furniture and I'm very happy with the quality given the price point. I'd recommend it if you can stomach the wait (mine took over a month to ship) and the fact that PSA will not answer emails or return calls.

Checkout primaryarms.com and get the Midwest Industries AR 15/M16 handguard removal tool for $9.99 and free shipping. Also all their Magpul Moe furniture and Magpul accessories are free shipping. I changed the handguard rails on my new S&W Sport recently and had never done this before, and it was pretty easy. Two piece handguard rail that snaps together pretty easy, but you need the tool to pull back the delta ring while removing the old rails and putting on the new rails. Piece of cake.

i picked up a sig sauer m400 enhanced model with OD green magpul MOE stock, grip, forend, and pmag. they are also available in black. havent shot mine too much, but it has been flawless so far and plenty accurate.
