Assault weapons remarks

My response would be me asking them to get out of my face and quit asking me stupid questions before I show them my assault weapon by punching them in the kisser!:cuss:

It seems by the various "definitions" and the fact that the "definition" is evolving, like perhaps the term "assault rifle" is a made up nonexistent thing. Much like the "war on terror", I mean come on, "terror" is an emotion, a feeling. Not by any means a thing that can be eliminated, especially by waging "war" against it. By definition, "war" itself is, and is a cause of, "terror".

I am not sure why that would shut anyone up.

Because every single anti I've ever engaged in conversation has absolutely no idea what the verbiage in the 1994 AWB is, nor did they know the verbiage in more recent proposed assault weapons ban bills.

I think the point of any argument like this should not be to shut the other person up, but rather to explain some of the intricacies of it to them.

One way to start off this conversation is to ask them why they think that civilians should not have "assault rifles." Then - as many have suggested - explore the actual definition of "assault rifle" which applies to your state. If you're in e-mail contact with the person, send them pictures of "scary" rifles which are nonetheless legal, and "non-scary" rifles which are technically illegal. (Note: This is easy in New York because anything with more than ten rounds is illegal, including .22s.)

This will demonstrate to them that the differences are not as clear-cut as they might have initially imagined. That will open the door for further conversations about why you might want to own such a rifle. If you start off with just a pat answer, they won't learn anything from the encounter.

Compound Assault Bow.

Damn, I have a couple compound bows.

To add assault to injury, I own a couple

20 arrow quivers.

Guess that makes me a "Terrist."

Get real..............

I usually laugh and ask them what an assault weapon is.

"it's uh.... well.... um... a machine gun..."

Mentioning "needs versus wants" is pretty good. Whether they agree or not, the Second Amendment is not a figment of anyone's imagination. If they want to see it repealed, I'll tell them they'd better look at gaining citizenship to another country and leave it at that.

However, if they actually know what an assault rifle is, I like "because my finger gets tired".

Waaaaal...

"Assault" means to attack a victim, does it not? And a "weapon" is a device or object used to hurt somebody. Does anyone on this forum go around attacking innocent people with their weapons? Of course not, in fact many of us would defend the victim of such an attack. So what we have, regardless of make or caliber, are "defensive weapons" at worst, or most likely target shooting guns, judging by the most common use of them.

These "assault weapons" of which you speak, only the criminals have them, whether a knife or a club or a gun, and assault is already illegal. So really, a ban on assault weapons is just the ignorant clamoring for the meaningless.

Parker, thousands of rounds fired at targets, not one at an innocent victim...

Blackbeard nailed it.

Here's a good visual from Oleg:

But I'd suggest trying to talk them through it rather than trying to shut them up.

I've never seen that piece of work from Mr. Volk. Thanks for posting it, JKimball.

catspa, that was much needed commentary, and I'm suprised I've never altogether rejected the "assault" part myself. I don't even like the word "weapon" personally, but "assault" is even more ugly.

Still, when it comes down to it, we should make no apologies for wanting to own something which we're supposed to be granted the right to own for good reason, even if it was originally intended for warfare.

My answer depends on who is asking. If it is an honest question by some one who wants to gain an understanding of the facts then I explain the differences and answer questions. If you’re not going to change there mind no mater what then I have used these in the past:

“Well unlike the President I don’t get 24 hour body guards paid for with tax dollars”

“ To protect my family from a hostile take over by enemies foreign or domestic”

“Because people like you are afraid of them! I really don’t like them but if it scares the heck out of you it is worth it!”

“Because late at night the closet gnomes scare the heck out of me and the assault weapon makes me feel safe!”

I know not very PC but it is how I feel about people who don’t find out the facts before making opinions.

Assault weapon is the English translation of a term dreamed up by Adolph Hitler to describe a light, reduced-power machine gun. Such weapons have been federally controlled since 1934 and banned from civilian production since 1986.

The term has been changed by politicians and anti-gun zealots to include any firearm that scares them.

-So, if you don't have an assault weapon now, wait a bit. Your gun - whatever it may be - will soon morph into an assault weapon.

What do you tell someone who asks "Well why would a civilian need an assualt rifle". What are some creative remarks that will shut the person up lol.

Depends. If you're not really in the mood to talk, just tell them you need one in case you ever need to kill a lot of people. If you're in the mood to try and teach a pig how to dance (not often in my case) tell them that anyone who is old enough to remember the L.A. riots knows the answer to that question.

usually they don't know what an "assault rifle" is
+10,000

Most don't have any idea what the law really is either.

Back in the '80s, Walter Jacobsen, then an anchor on CBS TV in Chicago, declared that people could "buy machineguns through the mail". His proof? An ad in the back of "Soldier of Fortune" for a PLASTIC BB GUN. Not coincidentally, he's a repeat drunken driver. I guess if the drunk driving laws don't matter to you, gun laws and the truth don't matter either.

NO, that would be an "assault RIFLE", or in German "Sturmgewehr".

The term "assault WEAPON" is an invention of the anti-gun movement in this country and has no fixed definition. It is whatever they say it is at any given moment. It's merely a rhetorical trick used to garner support for banning the greatest number of guns politically possible at a given moment.

"Don't need one, but damn am I a good shot with one, those .308s can stitch lead like you wouldn't believe."

"Well I need a rifle I can't shoot past 300 yards with, without a scope."

"Cause my bolt actions create really large holes and my FALs, CETMEs, and ARs[finally joined the club with one in 5.45x39 and .223], don't, they make nice clean holes."

"Cause you can't quite get that second shot on target as easily with bolt as you can with a semi."

"Why the hell are you an idiot and still breathing."

"You aren't going to reproduce right, if there's any danger you'll me know so I can 'fix' you, don't want that disease you got, Un-Americanism, spreading."

"Cause I like building them from kit parts, starting to figure out how to make them from billets of steel, just like those bolt actioin receivers I've figured thanks to those folks at jpfo.org."

I'm not the nicest guy so I occassionally bring up unwelcomed non-consensual 'romance', especially when it's some little weenie hippie guy who'd get passed around a prison block back in the good ol'days when prisons treated criminals like the animals they are.

"Ask another stupid question."

"Are you <expletive deleted>ing serious."

"I'm feeling less and less bad about a reckoning coming." Did that one a week ago at 'Borders' when I was reading "Shotgun News" and some little dainty college boys[I'm in law school] asked about M16s and BS. Got some odd looks mind you.

"Thank you for making your existence more worthless."

I got a long list.

"Well why would a civilian need an assualt rifle".

My answer:

"yea, tho I walk thru the Obama shadow of the valley of life, I stil fear evil"

I generally give them my speech on the conquering of the Black Plague experienced by our ancestors. Millions had to die before they discovered that the key to ending the plague was controlling the rats that carried it. To end the violence on our streets, our government has to one day discover that the key ending it is to control the criminal rats that spread it.

Once all the criminals have been removed from society, then I will be open to discussions as to why I, a mere civilian, woud need an assault rifle. Why does the president need armored cars and body guards. Doesn't he know that we have passed laws that make it illegal to attack the president? Maybe if we pass MORE laws making it even more illegal, he can get rid of his special cars and his bodyguards!

Why does a civilial NEED anything designed for use by the military:

Hummer
Jeep
GPS
the list goes on and on... And these are NOT guanteed by the US Constitution!

The term "assault WEAPON" is an invention of the anti-gun movement in this country and has no fixed definition.

Actually, it was made up by gun writers in the 80's and 90's to describe semi-auto versions of military style weapons. The term was used in gun magazines before it was picked up by the anti-gunners.

And, its definition really is more fixed than people thing. The definition of an assault weapon has been codified into federal law.
