Several months ago I was in a Taco Cabana in Austin and noticed a "no
weapons etc" sign on TacoCabana letterhead. I asked did they intend for
that to include "Licensed Carriers". "Yes" seemed to be the answer. I
called corporate and was given the run around for weeks. I finally
contacted Mark Phillips VP Ops and he said he would inquire. After a
month plus wait I finally spoke to him today. I'm paraphrasing his reply
here- "They felt that they are more of a bar at night and for safety
reason don't want guns in that environment"
I asked if their official position was "Concealed Carry Licensees were
drunks who would shoot up their place?" He said no but couldn't explain
what they did mean.
SO Taco Cabana doesn't want your business if you LEGALLY carry a gun.
They seem to be alright with criminals doing so however as they affirmed
that they don't read signs as they are criminals....
PLEASE email everyone you know that has a TC near them and call to
complain to their customer service at 1-800-580-8668
Actually even if you don't live here call and tell em'!!!

Unless they have a PC 30.06 sigh, their business isn't effectively posted against licensed carriers. I find it generally prudent to avoid doing business with any establishment that puts up an anti-gun sign even if it doesn't constitute a legal notice. Spending money with them just promotes the growth of surplus population and the proliferation of more business like Taco Cabana.

The Taco Cabana people seem to believe that their customers and / or employees are low, irresponsible drunks and they may be right.

Personally, I would just ignore the sign until they get one that's legally binding. Maybe they put the sign up to make someone feel better, but you and I both know that a criminal would just ignore a sign, even the 30.06 sign.

Some businesses in Texas deliberately put up "non-compliant" signs to appease the sheeple, knowing full well that CHL holders know - or ought to know - the law's signage requirements and will ignore non-compliant signs.

I don't patronize fast-food taco places, as I've never felt a need to increase my intake of grease. Hence, my question - is Taco Cabana really a bar at night? If they make 51% of their business by sale of alcohol for on-premesis consumption, then they're off limits to armed CHL holders. (And they ought to have a "51" sign posted.)

Hank,

Do you know this for certain or are you speculating? I just assumed these people were just plain stupid.

If anyone who works there who is in any way in a position of authority and they tell you not to carry you cannot carry. It doesn't matter what signs are posted. 30.06 is for non verbal. A verbal communication is a legally valid way to communicate that no guns are allowed. If there is no 30.06 then it's best to not ask. Then no one has told you anything and you're legal.

They only have the no guns sign in a few restauraunts.
I worked for the corporate offices of Taco Cabana for 2 years
and also helped set up several stores..

Having said that....

Taco Cabana Inc is clueless they have no corporate policy to speak of and every restaurant will be different.

Every store gets a sign package when they remodel or open a new location. The company that send out the sign pack always has a couple no guns signs (gun with circle and cross through it)

The manager who may or may not be able to read puts these signs up indiscriminately until the windows are filled with
signs he cannot decipher or comprehend.

The managers, district leaders and executive VPs cannot even get
a tortilla to come out round much less have a gun policy for each store.

Ignore Taco Cabana they are not anti-gun they are just anti-good food and anti-customer service and pro-lobotomy.

To slightly drift... is Pancho's still around down in Texas? Sort of a Mexican cafeteria... you told them what you wanted then you could go back through the line and if you needed help with anything, you raised your little Mexican flag for assistance? I loved that place. Back in the early '80s we would eat at the one in Bellaire (maybe just outside of it) all the time after shopping at the guitar store close by.

Now I'm hungry. :p

I think if I really look hard, I'll be able to find another place around these parts that will serve up some good Tex-Mex. :p geegee

In San Antonio, Chachos on IH10 and Callahan road is the best
fast and by far the best fast Tex Mex.

There are quite a few mom and pop joints but none quite like Chachos

rock, I have always thought that those "No Guns" signs I see down in Tejas are present for the sheople. When I first went down in '95 there were non-compliant signs of every description, now I see wierd red and blue signs. Note: I have only been to a very limited area of Tejas.

I always figured that it was the corporate office of general counsel attempting to have it both ways (darn lawyers). Petting the sheople but keeping the pro-gun crowd satisfied that the stores' actions are feckless.

BTW, Mamacita's in Kerrville has the best Tex-Mex in the RoT. I saw that new commerical they are running ("In this country, we are free to do our best"--I almost cried); I would believe that their political philosophy would be pro-carry.:D

If you think about it, Taco Cabana isn't exactly a real loss to CHL folks in Texas. Between Taco Cabana and a poke in the eye, I think I would have to go with th poke in the eye, definitely now that they have a no guns policy.

Look...Taco Cabana is awful...but it's the only drive through game in town for tex mex at 3:00 A.M.

As far as I'm concerned, that's it's raisson d'etre.

Coincidentally, I almost started this same thread a few days ago. The sign is not a 30.06, by the way.

Please call 1-800-580-8668 and state your views.

They put the number at the bottom of the sign...it's almost a challenge.

We have a lot of very official looking signs, here in the Rio Grande Valley, that all seem to prohibit the carry of weapons. The secret is to read it closely. It says the "unlicensed carry" of weapons carries the penalty of 10 years in the calaboz but you have to read it carefully and closely to note that they are referrring to illegally carried weapons.

As mentioned previously, it appears to prohibit the carry of weapons and the concerns of the Sheeple are satisfied.

I have only seen one sign that was close enough to a 30.06 to be observed and that was at a Popeye's (Poh Payas) Chicken place and it's not at any of their other places in town.

I've been to a Taco Cabana exactly 3x in the last 8 years. I'd much rather spend my pesos with the nice, friendly Hispanic family-owned mamacita-papacita place down the road from me; it's less expensive, it was made fresh- sometimes at my table, they know me by name, as I do them; the quality is always there.

You're right, the gun with a circle/line through is is for sheeple fuzzies. Unless it's got a 51% sign and a 30.06, I'm gonna be carrying- even then, I sometimes consider it my 'local option', but then I'm not one to frequent bars anyhow.

FYI for the yankees- 30.06 refers to the Texas Criminal Code statute number for the limitations on concealed carry. Cool, huh?

by the way, at risk of a blatant commercial, the restaurant is Don Pepe's Rachero@ Coit and Arapaho in Dallas.

Regards,
Rabbit.

YES!!! Chachos is awesome! I used to work in the big building right next door and we'd go there 2 - 3 times a week.

I'm kind of suprised that location isn't 51% considering how much alcohol flows through there, especially on the weekend.

Good stuff really.
