Most of the blame is mine as I didn't remember the old saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me".
I have bought four guns from a local gun shop over the past year and have brought another friend there who also bought two weapons at over 1k in price.
I bought an AR10 from them. I chose to accessories it at the store. The rifle was a flattop so I bought the front and rear sight from them. I got the rifle home and while sighting it in I was shooting about 3 foot over the target. While researching the AR10 before purchase I didn't know the sights from an AR15 wouldn't work for the front.
Called the gun store up asked if they could get said AR10 front sights. Gun store, "Well, better let you talk to Bob". Hold on the cell phone over 15 minutes then call back. Same thing. Finally told them to order what I needed, "no problem".
Two weeks later called them up....no sights even ordered, "talk to Bob". Waited another 20 minutes, no Bob. Tell Bob to call me back.......Three days later, no call. Tired of waiting to sight in my rifle and after asking questions on the net, I ordered it myself.
This has happened other times after this as I have asked them to check on ordering another gun for me and I get the same thing, talk to Bob. Bob is either never there or is on the other line, etc.
There are six guys up there most of the time, and I cannot help wonder why one of them cant look up/find a particular gun I'm looking for or give me a price. I dont know if "Bob" micromanages them on everything or what is going on.
I recently looked in to buying another rifle. I asked them if they could get it......same thing. Finally, I went to the store and talked to Bob myself. He said he would look on the net and let me know. Two weeks later, nothing. He claimed all of the places he inquired didn't call him back. OK, Bob suggested I find the gun and they would do the transfer..........FINE.
Called the company who made the gun I wanted, and got on the waiting list. I then called the gun shop and got Bob this time:what:. Told Bob the situation. Bob said to let him know when they were ready.
Got a call from company {lets call her Betty from XXXX}, gun is ready, I gave her the info on the gun shop for transfer. I then called the gun shop and told them to tell Bob that "Betty" from XXXX would be calling soon for the FFL transfer. Well she called them alright.......wanna guess what happened,...yep, Bob was unavailable. I found this out when I called them that afternoon. Bob said "I was on the other line, and she already hung up when I got to her". ****, ****........I asked did he call her back? "Nope, I was waiting on her to call back." He then told asked me if I had Betty's fax number. I said no, but it was on XXXX internet sight. He said he would find it and fax the info to her.
Called the gun shop next day.....nothing faxed. He finally faxed the info to Betty, now I'm waiting for the call that will never come that my rifle has came in at the gun store.
This was the last straw. I really like all of the guys that work at the gun shop, even Bob. I cannot understand why Bob is the ONLY one that can do anything at that store. Anyway since they are the only gun shop within reasonable distance I think Ill just buy my next weapon online and let the pawn shop do the transfer..........Again, I accept most of the blame for doing business with them knowing how it goes. Rant over..........

Well, sorry to hear your problems. Too bad for the store. They might be exceptionally busy -- lots of places that sell guns and ammo these days are. Even so, you have gotten pretty lousy customer service, especially since you are an active buyer, making good money for your local store.

Hope you find a good local FFL to do transfers for you. I've got one that is a retired US Marshal, and he charges only $10 for a transfer. I order some guns from him, but he only adds $20 to a gun he sells, so transfers are very easy and profitable for him. I keep him pretty busy, too!

Good luck -- maybe Bob will get the message that he needs to pay more attention to his customers in the future.

I think the problem would be solved if Bob would hand over the duties to some of the other guys at the store. I talked to a younger clerk {I guess everyone is young relative to me} there of whom Ive gotten to know, and asked him if Bob was the only guy who was allowed to do anything. He grined and rolled his eye's, and said in a low voice, yes.

Waldonbuddy, I'm glad you see the light.

Your understanding of "Fool me once...Fool me twice..." is right on.

More power to ya. You got the money, you should rule.

These are very annoying but seemingly minor issues. We've all heard far worse. True horror stories where life, limb and fortune were in put in peril. This guys seems like a royal PITA but maybe you can fix it.

I would kindly suggest thinking about letting Bob know you would really appreciate better service and see what happens. If the guy has decent prices, is the only reasonably close store and is not a certified loon, it may be worth trying to salvage the relationship. Mainly for your sake. Buying guns on the internets is a hit or miss deal.

I wanted to buy a gun on the internet but
I couldn't figure out how to get it
to come out of that little coffee holder thingy
that comes out of the front of my computer. :D

Thanks for reminding me why I buy my guns and accessories via internet. Best of luck to you, I am sorry you had such a hard time. Bob lost a good customer.

Most auction or sale sites have FFL dealer info for transfer dealers. It's not too hard to find one close to you, give em a call.

Over time you build just as good a relationship with them as a guy in a brick and morter store. My guy cut me $5.00 on the last transfer he did for me.

Biggest problem buying guns on the internets is not being able to look over a used gun, having to be home to sign for it and having to ship it back, should that become necessary. It ain't all peaches and cream. I'd rather deal FTF if at all possible.

My last choice is to buy on the internet. I am willing to pay for the customer service.

I had a similar expereince with a local gunshop. I eventually just started doing business elsewhere. Many apparently did the same thing as they are much smaller now relative to 2-years ago.

Price guns fairly. They will make ammunition and accessory sales too which have a higher markup. It is a win win for them.

There are many gunshops where only one person is authorized to price or order guns for customers that are not already tagged with a customer price. Even at big gun shops, this is the case.

Bought an ITHACA 37 defense from AAA Gun and pawn, he ordered it from the factory, 4 days, in. It took an hour for the transfer, we spent it in a coffee shop!

Any one of 4 sales people can order, boss checks paperwork, big boss does the same next day (Owner) I found out the ATF audit once a year, they are in there a week, huge store. Never had a problem with them he said.

The new Itaca 37 is true copy of first one, hold trigger back, bang-bang!

I've had some of the same type of experience's with the local dealer here. I wanted to order a lee mould a couple years back. Waited for over 3 weeks and they never even placed the order. If I need something right now I'll check in that shop, if its not right there right now I don't bother.

No sense in rewarding bad behavior. There are too many others that want your business and are willing to work for it. I would order from the internet or find another shop.

I would also factor in that most shops are in the middle of unprecedented inquiries and activity.

Maybe the shop is a bit overwhelmed. The past year has been a very busy one for most shops.

Just sayin...

There are 2 guns stores near me. Most of the time when I'm there
I sometimes think they wish I wasn't. The customer service is
more the appalling. I've heard one swear at a customer
underneath his breath (customer was like 10 ft away and I was 3).
The reason for the insult? The customer asked why they
had so few guns left.

When I was transferring from CA to OH. My friend calls up his local FFL
and they quote him $40 for the transfer. So, he goes to the dealer
and once they see what is being transferred they say "Oh, that's $100
because we have that gun in stock." What business is that of theirs!
That's a wonderful way to do business.

Real gun dealers can't stay in business doing transfers. That is just something they do for their customers every now and then. If I had the same gun in stock, I would not do a transfer either or the price would be in the neighborhood of $100. I think it is good business to cultivate relationships locally versus from some dealer in anther state who you have never met. Collector guns are the exception to the rule however.

22 rimfire, I gave Bob a chance to sell me the stupid gun first. After a few weeks of nothing, HE told me that he would do a transfer if I found the gun.
Also, to the reply that they might be too busy, did I say there were SIX counter men there.
Usually the guys have to find stuff to do. Also, this shop is between two towns, NOT in a major city like Atlanta, etc. so they are not that swamped with customers.........

The problem is that most gun shops are not run like proper businesses.

Most of them are hobbyists that are trying to make a living out of their hobby and not businessmen there to make a buck, so you end up dealing with folk that really have no business running a business.

I imagine model train guys and comic book guys and vintage motorcycle guys and other hobbyists run into the same problem.

Yes, there are exceptions, and those exceptions tend to get a VERY loyal customer base.
