I have a decision betweem a ruger super redhawk 454 casull or a glock 20 10mm. I need opinions on which to choose. I live in ohio and honestly have not much need for the ruger but really i just want a wheelgun, but also for the summers when i go to tennessee. But then again the glock 20 with 15 rounds sounds very appealing. Also if you choose the glock would you rather have the 20 or 29

If you're after the wheelgun for hunting then it's a great option. If you're after it more for plinking and general range fun then I can think of other options that are less punishing to shoot... unless you'll shoot handloaded rounds that are toned down a bit or hand loaded .45Colt rounds that are tuned to be fun but not punishing. Otherwise the Super Redhawk isn't really a gun for carrying other than in the bush with a nice holster rig. It's just too big and heavy.

Having tried to warn you off I have to say that I love the SR chambered in .44Mag that I got recently. The previous owner sent it to a gunsmith that cut the barrel down to just over 4.25 inches and it's hellishly fun to shoot. I'm looking forward to getting some .44Mag dies and reloading all manner of rounds from soft .44Spl like plinkers to hot magnum loads using slow burning powder that generate the BIGGEST fireballs.... :D

Yeah i was looking at the 44 mag also, but decided i'd go with the 454 if i decided to get a wheel gun. But your right about the weight, thats a issue for me because if i plan on hiking and such all day i know i wouldnt really want to carry that around all day, but then again i think will i feel good enough with 15 rounds off 10mm in a light gun instead in brown bear country. Thats what i cant decide

Oh for God's sake, the Ruger. Thats one sexy beast in the 454. Not saying the glock is any slouch, but you can trip over a glock they're so plentiful. The redhawk there has some class IMO.

yeah i love the looks of the ruger, just something about it appeals to me. I love the 454 also, but the light weight of the glock while walking and holstering is so much easier. Anyone every holstered a ruger SR with the 7.5 inch barrel all day?

I had a Super Redhawk in .480Ruger, what a cannon, got it for $300 at an auction. I had fun with it but no real need for a revolver of this size, traded it toward my only Glock a G34 in Nov. 08. I shoot the Glock in IPSC production class, and have shot the snot out of it. I would get the G20 full size Glock over the too small G29 IMO. I may be wrong (would not be the last time), but the G20 can be converted to .40S&W with a minimum of trouble and expense. Until the G34 entered my collection I was luke warm to 9mm pistols. While not a Glock fanboy I would like to ad another, the G20. 10mm ammo is easier to find than .45ACP, and in my area they are about the same price. If money is not a concern then I would suggest a 10mm 1911.

Im partial to 1911's. In my experience they look good, but they dont really fill the bill for me, imo they arent as reliable as a glock 20 in a 10mm, but its all personal prefernce. 15 shots of 10 mm is hard to beat.

But then again the glock 20 with 15 rounds sounds very appealing. Also if you choose the glock would you rather have the 20 or 29

My personal preference would be a 29 with a 20 slide and the pinky extension on the mag. It's enough grip for my hands and the 10mm deserves enough barrel. But, gun manufacturers are not building guns for me...

I'm an autoloader fan, so would pick the 10mm over the .454.

I'd get the Ruger, but I too would get a .44 mag instead of .454 Casull, although the .454 has some nice features, such as the ability to shoot shotshells, that the .44 mag doesn't have. If you don't load/are not independently wealthy, you might be better served with a longer barreled .357 as your first revolver, for its ability to shoot cheap .38 special reloads that can be had for around $9 per 50 round box if you know where to look. On the other hand, the 125 gr fmj .357 round should offer you adequate protection against any critters, two or four-legged, you encounter in Ohio. If you're more concerned about two-legged, load 125 gr jacketed hollow points, if bear, 135 gr fmj. Get at least a 4" barrel, and think about a 6" one if you're not worried about ccing the piece. 6" and longer barrels are what make revolvers so much fun, better than semis in my estimation, although a nice .45 long slide 1911 would be sweet as well.

ive had a 357 mag revolver, as well as a 41 mag, if i got a revolver it will definitely be in a 454. Will a 10mm round adequately penetrate a larger bears, although there is a very slight possibility i would need to fire at on. I could see the glock 20 being much more practical to carry around all day, and if i wanted to hunt i would use my ar-30 338 lapua mag, with the glock 20 as a secondary and also be used to conceal? i cant afford both handguns at the moment. so given what i wanna use it for what do you rhink now

Against big bears?

I would take the baddest gun I could lay my hands on. Amongst your choices- sexy six shooters aside -I'd .454.

If I get another revolver it will be eight shot .357. Walmart carries both .38 and .357 loads.

Hauling around a 7.5 Super Redhawk better be a vertical shoulder rig
like a Alessi Fieldmaster that distributes the load, it ain't a belt gun.

Only place you'd see Brown Bears/ or Girzzilies will be in Alaska. F&G in
Idaho have had traps for DNA evidence for several years and the only
genetic evidence they have found in the Rockies is Black bear.

PRice 45 COlt ammo? or 454?

Glock 20 and 15 shots - can yah hit something with the first shot and
at what range?

You talk about hiking - how much of that is just supposing?

SOme guys just gotta have a big blaster, and it's shown a lot to
friends and shot little.
