Welcome to the one and only Rimfire Match (here on THR anyway) for the month of June! The match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles)

Target Class [strike]can be shot from any position[/strike] is shot in the position indicated but rests (improvised or otherwise) are allowed, Sporting Class is shot from [strike]any position[/strike] the position indicated without the aid of a rest or sandbags. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both classes (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

*Please note the change in range*

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: Attachment No. 1. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is simple...hit center mass. Fire five shots at each silhouette using the position shown. Scored as marked with the center ring worth 10pts (wouldn't fit in the smallest/prone silhouette), for a maximum of 200pts.

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Attachment No. 2. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. Scored same as above, for a maximum of 200pts.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with the following information: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before June 31st. ;)

Glad you like it. IIRC we have done this one before (when FlyinBryan was running the match), but after a couple of years I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a repeat. I did take the liberty of modifying the original (adding the center bulls), so it isn't identical anyway.

:)

Since I just came in on the rimfire matches it's certainly new to me. Plus these are good targets to wring out my new M&P15-22, once a calm day hits. The red dot on it should help me out.

I swear I sometimes get more excited about firing rimfire guns then my centerfire ones.

ETA: one thing that seems to contradict in the rules:

Target Class can be shot from any position, Sporting Class is shot from any position without a rest or sandbags.

and

Fire five shots at each silhouette using the position shown.

So should we use the 4 different shooting positions? Or can all the targets be shot at a position of our choosing?

Well being an old and rather beat down guy I won't be able to shoot this target.

I'm sure you're not the only one to feel this way. Maybe we should have a third 'Rested' class this month. That way everyone can play and still be competitive.

Oops, forgot to edit that out. Yep, need to use the positions indicated, but you can use a rest for the target class.

Well being an old and rather beat down guy I won't be able to shoot this target. Sorry but can't do kneeling and can't do prone. I have no knees left at all - only arthritis and my back and neck are both messed up pretty bad plus leftover problems from my cancer surgery prevent me from laying on my stomach. Maybe next month. Good luck guys.
How about shooting the kneeling shots in the standing position and the prone in sitting? Would that work for you? Keep in mind that you can use rests (in those positions) for the target class, so this shouldn't be a horrible hindrance.

Edits made, thanks for the heads up guys. :)

So Mav, would it be acceptable for anyone to shoot any of the 4 positions on the target, from a more difficult shooting position, if necessary for health reasons?

I think I would have to shoot 3 standing and 1 prone on this target.
Would that be bending the rules too far?
Sitting cross-legged and kneeling positions are no longer in my line-up
due to loss of flexibility from a burst disk last year.

Sure, that'd be fine.

That works Mav. Thanks for making the changes. You didn't have to do it but thanks anyway.
Happy to help; after all the point isn't having so many ridiculous rules that it's near impossible to compete.

:)

with the bolt action in the shop, count me in. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

we'll see how fast I can reload my poor single shot!

Somebody has to represent the latest and greatest from Ceska Zbrojovka...welcome to the match armoredman.

:)

Got out to my friend's range this morning before it got too windy. Rifle - Savage Mark II (BSA Sweet 17 scope set to 12 power) .17Mach2 Ammo Eley.

Entry Magnified optics (rested - shooting sticks) - outdoors, wind 12-15 almost direct toward the target.

Didn't seem to have any trouble with the wind, but I did try to time my shots when it wasn't blowing quite so hard. (Think I got lucky jerking the trigger - ).

Gonna try this one again later with the little Norinco .22 (Browning clone) after I put the irons back on it.

Jim

Hey, I'm gettin' to be older than dirt - :neener: Besides, my math skills only extended to plane geometry & trig, not addition or subtraction and I've slept a whole lotta years since grade school. :D

8 (irons)

Good news and bad news.

Good news:

I found ammo my rifle likes, and established where the groups were landing! That's a big stride for this rifle. Look at the group shot while prone! Not bad for unsupported. woohoo :D!

Bad news:

I brought one target, and figured out the above at the cost of my first entry here. Not a good score. I think scored correctly, it's only an 8!

But, I'm adjusting my sights and I will try again, this time hopefully all in the black!

If it's any consolation I believe the bottom shot on "kneeling" was good, thus bringing you up to a grand total of 12pts!

...but now that you're dialed in the next one should be quite a bit easier.

:)

total yes... but grand? methinks no :)

Thanks Mav, we'll see how it goes next time

Mav - repeat after me: "30 days hath September, April, June, and November ..."
Wait does that mean there was only 31 days last month?...and I put "All submissions due before May 32nd". :p

Better act quick guys...June 31st is comin' up quick! ;)

Why not for the Rimfire BR crowd use the Rimfire BR type targets.

Yes, I could shoot my rifle from the prone using my 100 lb steel rest (just like in F-Class BR) but it does NOT work for anything else.

I don't do kneeling either and gave up on prone competitive shooting after my third stomach operation--which is why I shoot benchrest...The problem is that my RBA unlimited BR rifle is not designed to be shot from a standing position nor do I relish the thought of having to hold the damn thing up since it weighs thirty five pounds and my USRA heavy is thirteen pounds and also with a non standing stock design.

You wanted to see one hole groups from the .22 ammo thread--you will not see them in the standing position on your uncopywritten targets even if I used my new Feinwerkbau 2700 Super Match target rifle...Why not just post a generic single bull target as well and go for score--50/5x or smallest group.

Targets change every month (to keep the match interesting and evolving), and I usually ask for recommendations before starting the next one. FWIW I was just giving you (amongst others) a hard time in the .22LR ammo thread...but we are always happy to recruit a new shooter.

:)

Didn't see this month's rimfire match until right before I ran out the door to the range, but I had a bunch of copies of the original target printed out already (stumbled across it on THR while searching for something months ago).

These were the two best I got today, 25m unsupported except for a sling with CMMG dedicated 22LR upper. I'll print out a couple of the new version with the 10 ring before next week and give it another try.

Just realized that with the way my scanner works you can't even see the holes in the white that were misses, looks like I completely missed the paper on those.

That 200m standing is tough. Good challenging target, fun to shoot too.
