this ought to be fun.

It is! Just got back from the range.
Good target choice!

Instead of maxing out the elevation adj. on my scope,
I shot a few rounds of the ammo I was using and measured the drop.
Then I put up 2 targets, one over the other and shot at the top one while the rounds hit the lower one.
Is that okay?

Here's how low the ammo hit at 100 yds with my rifle sighted for 50 yds.
CCI Green Tag... about 8" low
Fiocchi 340....... about 5" low, (The Fiocchi 340 was fairly consistent in my rifle)

I'm not sure on the scores, I think I came up with 38 (CCI) and 48 (Fiocchi)?
BTW - The nine ring measures approx. 1.2" with a ruler.

Sure. I haven't shot this one yet, but I have done that in the past (@ 100yds. and beyond) and it worked well. If you'd like, and find it to be more convenient, you can also draw a dot/X/circle (for an aiming point) above the bulls.

BTW, good shooting...thanks for getting us started.

:)

Okay, thanks alot Mav!
It's supposed to rain the rest of the week here, so I booked it for the range today while I had the chance.:D

I'm probably going to be shooting the 50 yard irons target this month. Is it ok to remove the color of the red and blue rings and just leave the black lines? It's going to take a lot of ink to print the targets with the whole page in color like that. It will be the same size rings but without the color.
Absolutely. I only printed one in full color, an additional one was printed in subdued colors, with the balance in greyscale. B&W or greyscale is just fine...we don't discriminate by color here. :p

Maverick I'll have it converted to 17hmr for the match.
If the .223Rem. & 7.62x39mm variants are "Mini-Mausers", what would that be...a "Micro-Mauser"? :neener:

Hey Maverick. Email me when you get a picture posted up of what your new rifle can do at 100 yards. I'm not going to come on here otherwise anymore. Since I have nothing else to chat about. Aidos Maverick.

Got some time to shoot a bit today despite a slight breeze. Finally fed my little Romanian some good stuff and I think she likes it! Of course, then I go and get my best score on a B&W target  Might have to print out a few targets at work, ink cartridges are expensive for our older printer...

I see 44 points, still using my version of the seated position. It's not your typical sitting position, more like this: http://precisionlongrangehunter.com/images/image016.jpg (not a pic of me)

One thing I did use to help see the target better was pin up a sheet of white paper over the bottom half of the target so only the top half was visible. Helped me find the center with the overcast day we had today. I hope this is a legal trick?

I know the rifle is capable of a better though. I've gotten groups under an inch at 50yd when I have fired it from sandbags. Just need to keep working on the shooter is all. :)

Well done, BluEyes.

Sure. You can hide the target behind a stuffed bear and shoot it, if that helps :neener:...just as long as you don't put a thick metal funnel in front of it. ;)

Dang Maverick, you take all the fun out of it ;) Hey, gonna have to get the Mythbusters to try that funnel idea and see if it really would work.

Gotta get down to the range this month and try this one. Been busier than a one legged guy in a butt kicking contest.

Picking up a new (to me) .22 this evening. Norinco model ATD (copy of the little Browning bottom ejector semi-auto). Guy says it's as good a shooter as the Browning he has.

I'm left handed and the bottom slinger will be great to keep brass outta my face when I'm trying to hit the target!

I think I'll shoot one 50 yd iron sight sporting today. But those targets have to go in my opinion... they just use to much ink. Can we just use the 100 yard target for both?

Welcome to the match! It's a little late for that, and we need to retain the same target for everyone for scoring purposes, but printing it in greyscale is perfectly acceptable.

:)

Grey scale and printing it on the lowest quality save you a lot of ink. Still a little intensive, but not near as bad as it originally seemed.

Well I just got back from my range. Temp was about 70 and sunny with little to no wind. Perfect shooting weather.

The .22 I used was my Savage mkII with a lightweight barrel so it should be in the sporting class, I set up at 50 yards, prone, iron sights and unsupported from a truck bed (My range is still pretty soggy). The color target was the better one, looks to be 39 points. But I was happier with the black and white target, too bad I threw one and the drift sights were off.

I think I might install a scope on here and see what I can do at 100 yds.

So...Mav...When do you start keeping the leaders on the leader board?
Was actually thinking about that this morning...I need to get on it. I'll have the leaders up top no later than this afternoon.

I do the same thing (whether unsupported or from a bipod) all the time...it helps me get over the weeds on my range. ;) BTW, that was a very good group on the B&W! Are you certain that the full-color target isn't a 40 instead of 39?

:)

Could be 40, the one I thought was in the 9 ring is touching the line which from what I've observed in the thread means it is actually a 10. I can't ever recall scoring a target before this to be honest. So correction: that color target is 40 pts.

I also know now why I love micro click adjustments. *tap* oops too far, *tap* oops to far the other way lol.

40 it is. I look forward to adding the Nikon Monarch with 1/8MOA clicks to the Savage 93R17-TR (if they ever return it that is)...should make adjustments (at most any range) easy.

:)

Well here is my submission for the Magnified Sporting. The rifle was my brother's Savage Mk II with a stock heavy barrel, a 4x Tasco and the pre accutrigger.

It looks to be either 37 or 36 points, as that lower right shot in the 8 ring might be touching... I'll let the online judges decide.

I'm enjoying the rimfire matches, I look forward to keeping up with it.

I can't tell from here...I'll go with what you think. BTW a loaded .22LR poked in the hole is a good way to tell for sure.

Glad to hear it!

Picked up a Norinco ATD last night. It's a Chinese clone of the little Browning .22 (take apart, bottom ejection, semi-auto).

It turned out to be in very close to new condition with very few rounds through it.

Took it to the indoor range today just to test it out before putting optics on it and I took along the 50 yard Irons target just for giggles. Put a couple hundred rounds through it without a malfunction. I only printed 2 of the color targets, so I put 20 rounds in one at 50 yards just to make sure I knew where the rifle was shooting. Firing position was sitting with the rifle rested on my forearm. First target showed just a tad high and slightly left with a center hold on the yellow, so I took a 5 o'clock hold on the yellow and fired 5 on a fresh target.

Ammo was Federal "target grade" 40 grain bulk pack and it works pretty well. Aside from all the ink it used, I like the bright colors of the target for irons. Even with my bifocals, I was able to get a pretty good sight picture with this target. Really, there are only 5 bullet holes in the target, check the grease rings on the blowup. Pretty light paper and just hung from a clip on the track so there was a bit of tearing. 3 in the 10 ring, 2 in the 9 for a total of 48.

I picked up a Weaver scope mount and am putting it on this evening. The rear sight has to be removed to be able to put the Weaver #60a rail on as it bolts to the barrel and hangs back over the receiver. I'm putting the BSA scope off the old Romanian M69 on this one as I traded the Rommie and some cash for the Norinco.

Jim
