Spring Rimfire Match:

Thanks Mav,
It surprised me and the only semi-auto 22 I ever had that shot better than this was a Marlin model 60 that I still kick myself in the butt for getting rid of. Sold the Marlin to a friend of mine and he has absolutely no intention of ever letting me buy it back - :cuss:

I'm left handed as I've said before and this thing kicks the empties out the bottom so makes it pretty good for me.

My friend's outdoor range is sort of a mudhole right now as we finally got some rain last night, so shot this one indoors. I didn't want to have to clean mud out of the new rifle before I broke it in - :)

Can you blame him? :neener:

Speaking of rain...we got some big hail a couple of nights ago. I know it's probably nothin' unusual in your parts, but I picked up the largest hailstone I have ever seen...about tennis ball sized (luckily we incurred no significant damage, just a couple of very minor dings in the truck).

:)

You were lucky Mav. The biggest hail I've ever seen was about the size of a quarter and it did a LOT of damage.
No doubt. I think what saved us from serious damage (big dents & broken sunroofs/windscreens) was the short lived nature of the hailstorm (it only lasted about 10-15min. with about 5min. of large hailstones) and the fact that most was much smaller than that one large hailstone (on the order of shooter marble sized).

:)

Jeff,
I tried to come on a little while ago and it wouldn't let me. It had a message saying that they were going to try and move THR to another server at that time and that it would return after a successful, or unsuccessful, move. From the looks of it, it was not a successful move and it crashed.

It is a common occurrence during a server change for many posts posted around the time of the move to be lost. Generally, these posts are unable to be recovered. I can't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.

There's a new discussion posted this mourning that explains what happened.
Data was lost during the move.

I'll be home from school for summer in less than a week, so expect entries in the next several matches from me. Its going to be nice to be back shooting, I don't like being separated from my rifles for long period of time :D.

Agreed!

I had a chance to view the missing posts.

I'm hoping that I can crack out the new Savage 93R17-TR before the end of the month. Just got it back from their repair dept. today (BTW, their CS is excellent) and everything looks to be good to go. Just need to get the mounts and other accessories and it'll be ready for a little plinkin'. I have high hopes for this rifle.

That didn't take long! :)
Glad to here that Savage backs up it's excellent rifles with good Customer Service.
I bet that's going to be a real shooter!

Will do...welcome back, prid93!

I thought they did well...wish I could say the same for the boob from UPS (not to say that all are...but this one was) that left the rifle propped against the house. Granted my German Shepherd was out guarding the driveway, but it's a rifle...there's a signature form for that. :scrutiny: I made sure to give Savage a call to let them know that the rifle arrived safely and the work appeared to be well-performed. The CS lady that I spoke to didn't seem to happy about it either, so I think we may be getting a new UPS driver...which I am indifferent/on-the-fence about...he did make a mistake, but has been good in the past. My intention wasn't to get the fellow fired (unless he forged the receipt...in which case he deserves what he gets), just let Savage know that it arrived safely.

I really think I need to work on my shooting without a scope at 50 yards because I feel like some are waiting in the weeds to see what gets posted.
My ear hurts (I think I just happened to get lucky last mo.). :p Not waiting to see what gets posted...just waiting for the stuff to get a scope on that shiny new Savage
(okay, it's matte park'd...but the bore is shiny!).

BTW, good shooting. Your creeping up there...little at a time. You already have that "50" waiting don'tcha? :uhoh:

So Tuesday was a strange day for me. It was raining off and on, the winds was gusting and swirling and I had a host of problems with my 204 reloads in both my M77 and my AR.

Despite these issues, I lucked out on the rimfire side. One of the other members was practicing for an rimfire benchrest competition, so he had some nice wind flags out to 50 yards. I shot three of these targets and was getting some pretty bad horizontal stringing when all of a sudden all of his wind flags snapped to the left and held steady. I held at 9 o'clock right at the edge of the 6 ring and let five rounds fly as fast as I could before it started swirling again. I don't think I could do this again if my life depended on it.

Looks like a 53 to me. After I shot this I put my rifle down, figuring I had expended all my good luck for the day.

Same trusty set-up as always.

Same rifle as always:
Savage Mark II
Nikon 6-18x40 Buckmaster
Shooting off a Harris Bipod
Wolf Match ammo
at 100 yards

Here's a 53.

I was using Fiocchi SM 320
in the 63' Ans. Match 54
with the 15X Lyman
at 100 yards
from the bench using sandbags.

I'm not going to try to use the wind as an excuse anymore,
there wasn't much wind that day anyway,
but there were some surprisingly energetic mist droplets wreaking havoc with my accuracy! :p
I hope someone aces this target by the end of the month!

Some fine entries this month with the extended range...I think those of us with optics should be pushed and I think I've found my limit. I'm actually very happy with how my group looks but I couldn't place it the 1.5" lower where it needed to be. I believe this scores as a 30.

I only had 3 of the targets with me and I rarely shoot at this range with a .22. Next time I'll to print off about 7 more :D It was a fine day, about 60 degrees and no wind to speak of when I was shooting.

Same setup for me but sitting at a bench this month:

Gun: Ruger 10/22, target model K10/22-T
Optics: Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR scope @ 9x power
Distance: 100 yards
Position: benchrest
Ammo: Wolf Match Extra

PR, you know better than I, but it looks to be a "31" as I see it from the East Coast (but at this distance it's hard to be certain). ;)

FWIW. I've shot 25 or 30 of these targets, and got lucky when one of my smallest groups happened to land near the center.
I don't think I can improve on that 53, but I sincerely hope others can. :)

Good shooting!

Shooting 25+ targets doesn't result in a lucky group, that's practice, right? I also thought I'd have an easier time since I planned to shoot from a bench it didn't turn out that way.

Mav, I think I've sold myself short almost every match I've turned in here...going to get the hang of scoring one of these months.

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it...100yds. is one heck of a challenge with a rimfire (any rimfire); particularly if there are any deleterious circumstances (like wind!).

:)

I've been lucky enough to have time to practice when the wind wasn't blowing! :D
Work was a little slow, but that's beginning to change.
Sure have enjoyed it though!

Jeff, we still have a little over a week left, gotta be a few clear days heading your way. The last outing (with the new rifle) didn't go so swell, the wind swirling and sighting in the scope didn't yield much in the way of anything good so I'm hoping for at least one more shot myself.

:)

Hey Mav, I've read that a 10mph wind can drift that round over 3" at 100.
And that a lot of new rifles shoot better after you put a few hundred rounds through them (with frequent cleaning).
Hope you guys get some good shootn' conditions at the range!

That's what I'm hoping for. I did notice that it improved as distance increased (the initial sight in at 25yds was a PITA), be it from "break in", better conditions/less mirage (was later in the day), or simply demonstrating a preference for longer range. Either way, I hope that the trend continues so it will permit me to find what it likes.

:)

Hey Maverick since my mauser turned out not to be that accurate and since I can't shoot it in a indoor range I just traded it in. I got 100 dollars for it against a layaway plan for a New Savage 93R1 TRRSR in 17HMR. I'm flying to north carolina to your competion once I get it. Joking. Ha,ha.
