Chain firing with black powder revolvers is often mentioned. I am wondering how much velocity a ball would have if fired from the cylinder only? Lots of fire and smoke for sure but how small the velocity?

Last winter I was messing with a 1860's nipples and the one next to the one lined up with the barrel was set off when the recoil drove the the next capped nipple against the shield. What a surprise when I hit 2 targets.
There seemed to be a "derringer's" amount of force from the cylinder fired round.
Years ago, when I had some undersized balls cause chain fire the powder burning "backwards" didn't seem to have as much force.

Years ago in 1971 I was shooting in competition in a pistol match at our local
Club. My competition pistol at the time was a Piettta brass frame 1851 36 cal
Navy. I had made it more accurate by the barrel being held on by two Allen head
Screws going into the frame where the two pins are. Anyway I was in a hurry
and forgot to put any lube in top of the balls. When the first shot went off it
sounded kind of funny like it had just a little delay, hang fire kind of delay. First
Thing I thought was the shot would be bad mebby a 8 or worse. When I went
to cock the gun back that's when I noticed that two chambers had gone off.
I lowered down the hammer and put lube over the remaining three balls. I was
Afraid to look thru my spotting scope to see where the ball that came straight
out of the cylinder had gone. I thought one shot was good , a 9 or better, and
I was hoping the other one had missed the paper all together. Well I couldn't
stand it anymore and I looked. Well let me tell you there were two holes on the
paper and both were side by side about a inch apart and both were INSIDE the
10 ring!! How lucky can a guy get? I still have that target today. This was at
25 yards. Boy could that 36 Navy shoot.

That was extremely lucky and amazing!

Howdy

I have no idea what velocity a chain fired ball achieves, but I can tell you the recoil and the sound will get your attention. A bazzillion years ago, when I was young I was out in the woods and fields playing with my 44 cal brass framed 'Navy'. Yeah, I know, they were never made in 44 caliber.

Anyhoo, there was a wood chuck standing in a field, and I drew a bead on him. This was way back before Wonder Wads had been invented. The deal back then was to slobber Crisco over all the balls to prevent a chain fire. Let's not argue about where chain fires come from, the nipple end or the ball end. All I know is it was that woodchuck's lucky day. I pulled the trigger and the gun almost jumped out of my hand as the ball in the chamber next to the barrel came out too. I always assumed it hit the frame and then when who knows where. But the woodchuck lived to tell the tale.

The velocity is minimal due to the fact that less than 100% of the powder charge will have time to burn prior to the ball exiting the chamber thus relieving the pressure driving the ball. Would you care to be hit with one? Probably not. The velocity of a Black Powder projectile is dependent upon the amount of time and distance in the barrel that pressure has to build and increase the velocity of the projectile up to a point where the fuel is exhausted. That same projectile over smokeless powder would have a totally different result as smokeless relies on pressure to increase the burn rate of the powder thus increasing the pressure and in turn increasing the burn rate until fuel exhaustion or pressure release.

There are some Black Powder fantasy guns out there that folks have removed the barrel and simply use the cylinder as the barrel(s).
