Bar and Chain oil

I asked this question on another forum. Since my chainsaw gave up on me I am left with a few ounces of Poulan Bar and Chain Oil.With the high price of oil and all, I'd kind of like to find some practical use for it.Its probably too "sticky" as it is but mixed with motor oil or transmission fluid would it make a good gun oil? Would you think more of a lubricant or rust inhibitor?

A guy on the other forum said oil went up 400%. I think that was a figure of speech but they have increased (alot).

I'd say NO. Guns don't need much oil. Last thing you want is to gum one up when you need it. Use it for other mechanical things.
True you don't want gummy or sticky. That's why I was thinking mixing it with some other lightweight oil. Are chain oils sensitive to temperature change?

B&c oil is pretty standard weight oil with a tackifier and other additives good for rust protection and is made to brake up wood dust, it may work pretty good on semi auto bolts and slides, a average saw Chain travels something like 6 feet every second when cutting. It may make the inside of a gun look like spider webs with how tacky it is. We probably use a gallon of oil for every 10 cord of wood we cut and we will do 300-400 cord a year so we go through a lot in a year. We use the good stihl oil that's about $30 a gallon it was like $10-$12 4 years ago. You don't even want to know how much stihl gas we go through a year and that stuff is about $40 a gallon but to get the most power and keep the saws running you have to use it especially in the big saws.

I recently bought a Hart weedeater, blower, and it
drill. According to their literature the same battery is used in all Hart products. Do they make a chainsaw?

Ya they do but the 20 volt I think is only a top handle like a climbing saw, there 40volt doesn't look to bad but you need 40v batteries. And it's only 4ao but for small jobs fine. The electric are nice to keep in the truck. There like $200 the Milwaukee is about $500 with. Battery and is 18v which is nice.

Put it on your bicycle chain.

Personally don't care for using stuff like motor oil or ATF on guns. They basically have no corrosion resistant properties. I'm sure the same would apply to B&C oil.

A left over few ounces?
Why do people want to mix crap that shouldn't be on firearms just because then wonder why they won't work??? Use some WD40 before that stuff and and thats not great. Or use some Canola oil. Should work as well and for salad too.

It's not stickier or gummy-er than slide glide or some of those.

We used to go through 25 or so gallon of bar oil a year. Still use plenty. There is huge variation in bar oils. Often the cheapest was tsc when they ran the 7 dollar a gallon sale. They also have a thinner winner mix. We used husky pro saws with sugi bars and stihl chain. Echo 2 cycle oil. Lol

I wouldn't use it on a gun. If I just had to dispose of some for some reason.... that wouldn't be it.

I run a shop and we have equipment. Oil may be higher but it's pennies. Especially compared to ammo (or primers)

A gallon of radco clp is 85 dollars now. The last gallon i bought was 79 back in 2021.

Just get another saw. Gas or battery you need chain oil. You may get by cutting small stuff with a battery powered saw but you wont do any serious cutting with it. Have you all priced real battery powered saws? Stihl battery powered versus gas almost twice the price and that only comes with one battery. I cut to much wood to dilly dally with a battery powered chainsaw...

I've used the stihl and the husqy. They are right with a normal 50cc saw. They aren't toys. Local firewood place uses them when its raining they saw indoors. Pretty impressive. One battery will go a similar amount of cuts to about 3 tanks of fuel on a 550. The husky is 400 dollars. About the same as a gas 50cc.

I've no intention on ever changing to battery. Between myself and dad we have 30 or so gas saws. Mostly husky. 550xp to 3120 in husky and 201 to 660 stihl. Couple mac and echo and dolmar as well. Maybe even have a poulan somewhere.

To the op though
I don't know why you wouldn't use it on a door hinge or just build a fire with it if you are offended by having a few ounces of unusable oil....I wouldn't put it on a gun.

That said....we have many acres of "stuff" and many barn full of junk too. So I get why people see the need to get rid of things. I wish I did more of it sometimes. Lol

@crestoncowboy I'm sure those Battery saws have their place. The local light company has a small one for trimming limbs. The Stihl 300 series 16 inch is 1300 bucks with battery and charger. 44 minutes run time. Stihl FS391 700 bucks, Farm Boss 500 bucks. Get into the commercial stuff is a whole new ballgame. My weedeater, blower and chain saws use same fuel mix so I'm good as well and will never switch...

For me, the cordless saws are good for light or occasional work. My electric Husqvarna is a bit testy. Easy to stall and tough to keep the chain tight. I use the cordless on small stuff around the house or camping. Sometimes you just don't want to fool with a gas saw or smell like exhaust all day for two minutes of cutting. Thinking about an "upgrade" to the 60volt Dewalt to get some more horsepower.

They can also be carcinogenic or otherwise bad for you to have on your skin or breathe the vapor. And they usually stink.
